If Thumbtack allows users to more stars, I would grade Maha for 10/10! Before our project started, we interviewed almost 20 contractors and Maha is the only one provided the professional in-depth site analysis with very detailed bidding with all items broken down into material and labor as well as the amazing schedule analysis (and we did have the project finished prior to the original projection date). Thru out he entire project process, Houman (owner of Maha) was showing all his professionalism into all the detail and he was on-site everyday working with his crew, providing prompt update and honest suggestion in all area. He also provided very helpful weekly progress summary that help me to show to my management for the update. The entire crew was all professional, friendly, and showing their care to the premise owner every moment. Communication is 10/10 as well. At the end of the project, I noticed some additional item that I omitted earlier, and Houman was able to help me on those as well altho he didn't have to, all respect for that. I definitely will come back to Maha again if I have another project coming, also recommend them to anyone looking for professional and sincere designer/contractor.

I was referred to Team All Star by my friend who they had done some work for to do my house remodel, they did my roof, my windows, my air conditioning, a new patio and painted. All the work was started at the same time and they completed it in about a week. I am so happy, all the workers from the roofers to the painters did an amazing job, and I just love my windows. Larry came out with Sean and gave me some tips on design and it all has turned out so beautiful. I want to mention that even though I called Larry a lot, he never complained even when it was 10 pm, he always was kind and courteous. Dealing with Larry and Team All Star was like working with my family, they really made me feel important. Thanks you guys!

OMG! Amazing! Outstanding! I chose DG Construction because I needed several jobs done and I didn't want to hire multiple companies to do the work. My projects consisted of painting the entire downstairs of my 2600+ sq. ft. new home, landscaping my dirt backyard, and putting in a concrete dog run which would be separated by an iron gate that matches the builder's gate. David Gomez, the owner, came out to my home to give me a free estimate. I explained what I wanted in general, and he refined my ideas and gave me some additional ones. Like a smart shopper does, I sought out other companies for estimates so that I could make an informed decision in choosing the best company for the job. Since DG Construction was the only company that could do EVERYTHING that I wanted and the estimate was reasonable and right in the middle of the other estimates, it was my company of choice. I was very impressed with Mr. Gomez. He's young, but don't let that concern you. He's extremely knowledgeable, experienced, efficient, reliable, professional, and personable. He is an on-site boss. He was there at the beginning and end of each work day. His workers were awesome! They arrived every morning between 6:00 and 7:00 and worked throughout the day until late afternoon with only minimal breaks. At the end of the work day, the crew cleaned-up and made sure that everything was left neat and in order. Throughout the entire job, Mr. Gomez kept me informed of the progress towards completion. I appreciated the fact that Mr. Gomez was constantly mindful of my maximum budget when making suggestions to further enhance the outcome of the various projects that I had done. It was unbelievable that at the end of SIX days, all of the projects that I wanted done in addition to a few extra ones were completed! My downstairs is beautifully painted. I now have a nice dog run with a perfectly matched iron gate, and a gorgeous landscaped front and back yard. I was and am elated! The quality of the work and the timeliness are exceptional! This by far was the best and most satisfying construction/remodeling experience that I have ever had. I will definitely be calling on DG Construction for all of my future projects. I strongly recommend that you do the same. I am certain that you won't be disappointed!

My house was updated and remodeled by APCO. I have worked with a number of contractors. APCO is very different. APCO has Laura and Alan who are very talented designers. Their design ideas turned my house into a showcase - something I could not have imaged on my own. They were honest and dedicated to pleasing me. I highly recommend APCO.

Carlos told my husband that the drywall and texturizing repair would take 4 hours (multiple spots in the house due to a plumbing leak) and he was in and out in that time. He was professional and did a good job. He communicated with my husband regarding what he was going to do and did not charge over the amount quoted. Would definitely recommend Carlos!

My wife and I recently contracted with Turn Key Remodel to have our kitchen upgraded with granite counters, travertine tile backsplash, and under cabinet lighting. We must say to anyone reading this review that the quality and workmanship far exceeded our expectations. We could not be happier with the transformation of our kitchen. The granite has outstanding motion, the travertine added the perfect contrast, and the under cabinet lighting brought it all together. Working with Mark Apicella was effortless. He helped us with the design, material selection, and color combinations. This was very helpful, as we have never tackled a kitchen remodel before. Mark directed us to outstanding wholesalers for granite and tile along with specific contacts. The process for selecting the granite and tile was straightforward and painless. The entire installation took only six days, which minimized our kitchen downtime. Mark’s granite and tile installers were awesome. They demonstrated craftsmanship and always took the time to answer my questions, which I had many. Mark’s electrician installed a separate switch for the under cabinet lighting and consulted with us on options and location. We would definitely recommend Turn Key Remodel and we will have them do our next remodel.

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

Once again Jessie comes to my rescue and levels my dirt so that my stucco job will pass inspection. He also tore out two walls and hauled away my drywall trash. Is there anything this guy can’t do? I highly recommend! (I’ve used him 4 times already), always extremely happy!

Home star contracting team are very professional, skilled and most of all true to their word. I remembered, looking for a contactor online and in a few minutes thereafter I received an email from Home Star contactor. I was very impressed with an email that was sent to me, enclosed in the email three pics of finished remodeled kitchens that they completed. Proof of their work. My attention was captured. Phil's email was not pushy but made himself open to allow me to decide if I should respond to his email. I did! I had at least numerous contractors (5) to my house making their bids and they were very harsh and pushy. The experience with them gave headaches. All but Home Star. What I liked about Home Star, is that the contractor, Phil who came out to the house for the first meeting he listened to what my needs were regarding, remodeling my kitchen. Home Star bid seemed way realistic than the other bids I received from other contractors. A week after I signed the contract, the work started. Home Star workers were friendly yet maintained boundary. They cleaned up after each work day. Even though I had no functioning kitchen, each time they left my home they would connect gas line just in case I needed to use the stove. The microwave was also available. They were so considerate. I have a dog and my dog became their friend as they treated him like their own. The work was completed in a timely fashion. One month my kitchen was transformed from a little space to a larger beautiful functional kitchen. Phil Everitt, you impress me, in responding to my phone calls and texts timely. My questions were answered or my anxiety generally subsided after receiving a response from you. Daniel who worked daily on the cabinets, Rick who did the electrical work and the others who completed backsplash, granite etc... I love, love the richness of my kitchen. It looks amazing. Thanks guys!! I was so impressed I requested additional work such as can lights and fire place. Thanks to Home Star. Thanks Phil, Rick and Home Star team for being honest contractors. I will not hesitate to call on Home Star for any other project.

Hired Monica & Joe after seeing some wonderful flips that they had done for investor clients of mine. Fantastic job!! They took a tired old looking house from the 1970's and made it completely amazing looking. A huge punch list was accomplished in a mere 3 weeks, including remodeling the kitchen, all baths, new paint, new carpet, new blinds, deep cleaning. We now have tenants fighting over this property!! All work was very high quality and was accomplished very fast (beyond our wildest expectations). Great communication. Definitely over delivered on both quality and timing! Will use again and again! Thx for a wonderful experience!

Mark has been invaluable in assistance on a variety of projects. As a property manager, many contingencies arise with tenants, and Mark has been our go-to guy. He's efficient, meticulous, and takes the time to explain the alternative fixes, and which ones are most beneficial to long-term satisfaction. We are happy to recommend him as a resourceful, skilled contractor.

Doug is an outstanding resource in my business. I can always count on him to take care of my clients' repair issues - whether it's as simple as installing smoke detectors to drywall repair and paint work and other household "fix-it" items. He is impeccable with his word, reliable, and extremely reasonable with his pricing. Most importantly my clients like and trust him - which is extremely important to my business and reputation as well. I highly recommend Doug and will continue to call on him for my personal projects as well as for my clients' needs!!

Working with Wayne has been the best decision. He does fast quality work and has found several issues with our reno from previous contractors doing a sloppy job and has made it right. He is always on time and shows up when he says he will, stays within the budget and goes above and beyond. We are using him after being hung out to dry by another contractor, I can’t say enough good things about him and his team.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
