About this pro

How does your service stand out?

I'm an active stage vocalist with over 20 years experience, a singer-songwriter, acoustic guitarist, as well as some mandolin, ukulele and piano, with experience in multiple genres including musical theater, light opera, country, jazz, pop, worship leaders and more. My primary subject is vocals while I also teach a bit of acoustic guitar, mandolin ukulele and piano. I especially love teaching vocal performance workshops, clinics and customized group lessons. I understand the demands and challenges of a busy performance calendar, singing sets for back-to-back audiences day after day and week after week, and the need for a vocalist, no matter what genre, to find the vocal freedom that will produce confidence in their voice for any venue.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

My first love is helping singers find their voices and the complete vocal freedom to sing whatever they set their hearts on. Most untrained singers struggle with tension and pain when they sing. To them vocal freedom and confidence can seem very elusive. Surprisingly, it's not as elusive as one might think! A voice free from tension that is clear, rich and beautiful from the bottom of one's range to the top without variation in quality is within reach and most students experience some measure of it within the first lessons, some even gaining a full octave in their usable range in their first lessons. Using systematic methods incorporating the study of good technique and learning songs the student enjoys makes progressing more fun and gives the student a greater appreciation of music as a whole while encouraging a passion for music that lasts a lifetime. I encourage and teach sight reading, and theory basics especially for those students who are considering music as a profession.

Thank you for the kind review, Diane. What a joy to have you in my little studio and to hear you play real music on my piano. I imagine it gets bored of just playing scales. ;-) It's a pleasure to be a part of your vocal journey and hope you'll keep me on your friends list. May your musical pursuits be blessed always!

Our church's worship team felt like we needed an expert to help us reach new heights during our worship but we had no idea where to get started. So we decided to find a vocal coach. Some of the members of the team had expressed some anxiety about having a professional come, since many vocal coaches they've come in contact with were mean spirited, overbearing, and tyrannical.... wow! Fortunately for us, Cosima was God sent. She really has a heart for what she does, and that positive attitude was manifest during our workshop. She equipped us with practical tools that we needed to make our practices as well as our worship experiences more purposeful! The whole experience with her exceeded our expectations.Thank You Cosima... wonderful at your craft.

Cosima is a very personable and knowledgeable vocal coach. Her demeanor is comforting yet encouraging when working through those "rough notes". In the short time we have been taking lessons from her, she has given my son much needed confidence to navigate his changing voice. We are very happy to have found Cosima!

I was in town for only a few weeks to play a role in a musical production of the Book of Esther. Cosima was there to help just when I needed it! She took me as her vocal student at the last minute and helped me work out some weak areas and insecurities I was having with my voice. Cosima is knowledgeable and able to see into your voice to help you get right to the issues you are dealing with. Her kind manner and energy helped me feel secure and ready to tackle those high notes and work on other weaknesses. When we were finished I felt as though I'd known her forever and my singing had improved greatly. I'd recommend Cosima to anyone interested in getting over some vocal issues and to those who are just starting out.

Thanks, J. Drop in anytime and we'll get you tuned up for the big performance!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm always learning. I study singing technique on an ongoing basis and research the best ways to help each of my students individually, based on what they want to learn and where they are signing wise. I am very excited to have certificates in Music Theory and Ear Training, Songwriting, and Music Production, focusing on a Specialization Certificate in Modern Musicianship at the Berkeley College of Music. I've been studying singing for more than 20 years with an emphasis on proper vocal technique that insures the singer whether young or old a healthy voice throughout their vocal future.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
I teach voice, guitar, mandolin and ukulele. Rates begin at $30 for 30 min, $35 for 45 min and $40 for 1 hour. Students can choose a "Pay as you go" system or enter into a monthly contract. Monthly contract prices are for 4 lessons a month. That means that if a month has 5 weeks the student gets a FREE LESSON that month. Most of my clients choose to enter into the monthly contract. I also teach at conferences and clinics and workshops that can be customized per event/venue. Cancelations and rescheduling may occur so I keep that in mind and use a grace system. I want my clients to come back so I'm gracious about rescheduling and fees. I also offer instrument rentals at an additional cost of $25 monthly.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was one of those singers that fit into the "can" category. I grew up singing, performing and teaching others to sing harmony before I graduated elementary school. As an adult I was performing every week, singing backup vocals for events in the USA and abroad but, I was having trouble with my voice and needed help. When I discovered a technique that saved my voice and improved my singing abilities others began to ask me to help them with their voice too and over time teaching others just naturally developed. When it became evident that my ability to teach others was in demand I acquired certification and started my home studio business.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I believe that as a student it's important for you to get that teacher that's just right for you. Look for a teacher that not only fits your budget but fits your personality, skill level, needs and goals. Don't be afraid to ask for an interview that includes a sample of what you can expect in an average lesson. As a client it's important to feel comfortable with the studio arrangement, teaching style, teaching level and personality of your teacher. After all, if your not comfortable it may hinder your progress and a good teacher will be more interested in your progress than how you will affect their portfolio.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Most people who like to sing fall into two categories, those who can sing and those who have to work at it. The truth is, even those who can sing need guidance. Singing or vocal lessons are for anyone who wants to sing well. Even the most gifted singers take lessons. If you want to sing as good as your favorite singer, remember, they had a good voice teacher that helped them find that amazing voice.
