Bruno is a one on one tutor for pre-calculus for my junior in high school. His knowledge of the subject and his ability to share it with my daughter are exceptional. My daughter's class is struggling to learn the basics so Bruno is basically teaching my daughter the new concepts. She is able to understand it and complete all her homework after her time with Bruno. She also felt confident taking her first quiz after her tutoring sessions.

Youlian's lessons are very well organized and planned, and she has an absolutely fantastic ability to explain the nuances and subtleties of day-to-day Mandarin. Every lesson includes listening comprehension, reading comprehension (I'm just using Pinyin for now but she covers Hanzi as well), and conversation practice, and Youlian always provides me with very helpful feedback.

Tim was a great teacher for me! He was easy to talk to,understood my questions, and helped me improve my weak points. After working with him for a few months, I was able to understand a lot of the material provided in the SAT test and improve a lot on my practice test. Overall, Tim is a great teacher for learning how to improve your English , especially to prepare for SAT test.

Angela does the best job of explaining concepts for AP/SAT if you are trying to learn something outside of school. We did our tutoring over the computer, but I actually found it more engaging than in person. For example, I was confused about cos (180degrees), because I hadn't learned about it in school yet. Angela's explanation also made 10x more sense than what my math teacher would say. Now I FINALLY understand how to find cos (180degrees)!

Prabh and I worked together for Calc 1 last year. Even though, he was taking Calculus BC in high school at the same time, which I believe is Calc 2 in college, he was very good at clarifying concepts and simplifying the processes. I saw my scores increase significantly, and my grade was significantly better by the end of the class. highly recommend him as a tutor!

My daughter is quite pleased she has Namita as her tutor in geometry. Namita is very patient and takes her time in explaining homework assignments to my daughter. Her sessions helped her catch up with lessons she did not understand before which made her and I very happy. I will definitely recommend Namita to my friends.

Chris is an excellent teacher. I had a few other teachers before her, and I can say Chris is the best. I think she is also a good phycologist, because she finds right approach to every student. Her lessons are very effective. My 7 years old daughter knew no English at all. She was ready to go to local school just after 3-4 lessons with Chris, her vocabulary increased from zero to a few hundreds of words. I feel dramatic improvement in my English pronunciation after taking lessons with Chris. My accent was so strong that even waiters in McDonalds did not understand me. Now I speak freely, even over the phone, and I do it intuitively without thinking about how do I do it.

We were very lucky to find Sihem to tutor our 9 and 7 year old daughters. She has been with us for over 9 months now, and has consistently been professional, engaging and an overall pleasure to deal with. She teaches well and often comes up with creative ways for our young children to remain engaged and to continue their learning independently. After each lesson, she offers constructive feedback and suggestions for how our girls can continue their learning independently. She also thinks outside the box, often using french games, puzzles, and other exercises. Our girls love having her as a tutor, as do we. I do not hesitate to recommend her highly.

My son has struggled in school since he was Kindergarten. We tried tutoring, EEG Neurofeedback and Interactive Metronome programs which were all supposed to help him with his focus and auditory processing issues. None of it really made a considerable difference and ended up being a waste of time and money. Fast forward to middle school and by 8th grade he was overstressed, depressed and failing courses despite his diligent efforts. I discovered Zion Brain Training and had my son tested. It was clear that he had focus, comprehension and auditory processing issues. We began the intensive 12 week program and within 7 weeks, we saw a dramatic change in his grades. At the beginning of the program, he was getting a D- in English and an F in History. By the end of the semester, he attained a C+ in English and a B- in History! Unfortunately, we had to stop the program prematurely due to personal scheduling conflicts, but I could only imagine how much more progress he would have made had he finished. When my son was tested for a post program evaluation, we couldn't believe how much he had improved in all areas, it was outstanding! If you are willing to put in the time and effort, then it is definitely a worthwhile program.

My grades drastically improved as a result of studying with Susanna. I would give her more than 5 stars if I could, she's an amazing tutor. Susanna expertly tutored me in math starting with middle school algebra and continuing all the way through college calculus. She was a valuable partner for the majority of my math education. She is especially skilled at helping you master mathematical concepts by distilling complex ideas into easy to understand examples.

I highly recommend Mrs. Siegel for her patience and love for teaching. She used to be an elementary school teacher, so she knows how to make a student comfortable while they learn. I had an excellent experience as she has taught my two sons.

Kim Moya worked in my 5th grade classroom for several months while completing her teaching credential. She eagerly planned and implemented standards based lessons that incorporated hands-on activities and cooperative learning. Kim creatively added music and movement into many of her lessons, resulting in an exhilarating learning environment for students with diverse learning styles. Kim routinely went the "extra mile" to select, create, and organize supplemental materials to ensure that all students would have access to, and understanding of, the core curriculum. Her positive nature and patience set students at ease. Kim made it her mission to connect with both the students and their families, making all feel welcome and special. Kim's enthusiasm and passion for teaching remains a constant!

Toby has helped our son in two subjects - Biology and AP Calc. She carefully assesses the student's needs, plans accordingly, is very patient and communicates well with the parents. She has an uncanny ability to establish rapport with the student. After each lesson, she sends a summary of what was taught, how the student did and areas where student needs focus. This is very valuable in keeping the student on track. We highly recommend her.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
