Kevin helped us fix a delta touch2o faucet in our kitchen. He had to remove the drain pipes and the disposal system to get access to the old faucet. This took more time than planned, but Kevin was very professional and got it done right. He made sure that there were no leaks in the faucet and the drains after the install. In the process, he taught me some key points about the system that I was not aware of. I highly recommend Kevin and I will be hiring him for my future plumbing needs.

We found Salinas home remodeling services most helpful in several ways. Services done for us included electrical wiring, plumbing installation, wall and ceiling painting with texture applications. Also, bathtub, sink and appliance installation. All work was done at high standards. Note: we also experienced generous and positive attitudes from soft spoken professionals, and received on time service. Above all, we have memories of his installation process that are most rewarding. Thank You, Mr. Vyron Salinas and his helper Pablo. Yours truly, Nicholas Adkins

The work quality was excellent! For us, this was a project that involved replacing 5 bathroom sinks that we purchased, replacing all the angle stops, related plumbing, and installation of 5 new faucets. We are very happy with Max and his technician Beto's professional work and will not hesitate in the future to use their services again. They were very responsive, on time, and gave us a very fair price.

We hired Gleo to fix an electrical issue as well as install a light fixture in our staircase. He was through and handled a complex job with ease. He also held to the price he originally quoted despite working longer then he expected. He is also licensed, insured and guarantees his work. We highly recommend Gleo and would hire him again without question.

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

I appreciate what Mark did with the fixes I needed around the house. It looked good when he finished but started giving troubles after a few days. Mark was prompt to respond about the troubles and came over to fix it correctly not once but twice. It has all been working great since then and I would hire Mark again for all my plumbing/handyman needs. Great work!!

David was amazing! He scheduled a time to come to our apartment, and showed up on time (none of that 1-3 hour time window that companies love to do). He took a look at the piping, and took the time to explain to us all our options, as well as what work we need to do, and what we could optionally do to make our plumbing better, very clearly differentiating between the two. Now, we live in an apartment building that has atrocious plumbing, and doing any work on pipes is a terrible experience. David was willing to work through all of this! I highly recommend his services. He's prompt, polite, and knowledgeable, and very willing to work with you.

The job here was to remove a cast iron bathtub and replace the tub with an acrylic model. I honestly (I watched the whole time, being the typical nervous homeowner) cannot believe the quality and level of professionalism they bought to the job. Of course with a house of my age (50 years) there always will be unknowns in the job, especially when plumbing is involved. But they handled it great. They also discovered an issue with the drain and fixed that also. I really don't want the drywall to go back up, because the new plumbing work looks so great and will be hidden. Oh well. Anyway, they did a great job and I would highly recommend them. I will easily rehire them for another job.

George is very responsive and explains in detail what needs to be done and when. His proposal was precise and professional. His team, including him, showed up when he said they would. He made sure that we agreed on exactly on where the work (a 200'+ trench will have to be dug with connections on both ends) would take place. Even though there were a couple of small surprises (fortunately), they never became an issue and they worked around them. He made sure that it was not just up to code, but the county inspector looked at it for five minutes and could tell it was done by professionals. Got sign off without any issues. In summary, the work product was outstanding and when I have another plumbing project, I will have George and his company come back.

I highly recommend Flelix & Flex One Plumbing! Flelix “snaked” and cleared a clog in my 70 foot main sewer line in my Los Altos house for only $185 ( I have a readily accessible clean out on the side of my house). Other plumbers were quoting $220 plus ( one guy, who I found while googling wanted $450!). In addition, Flelix returned to my house on 8/14 and ran a camera through that 67 year old main sewer line of mine FOR FREE! Others had quoted $350 - $450 for such a service. I wanted a diagnosis of that old sewer line ( any offsets, root incursion, irregular line sloping ect. ) in order to plot long term strategies for keeping the line going. Look, it always makes sense to hire or at least get a quote from a guy like Flelix- an extremely experienced guy who has worked for the much more expensive major plumbing outfits for decades and who now is independent ( for two years now). He’s just as good, just as competent, has all the same equipment as the big boys but he charges a lot less BECAUSE HE DOESNT HAVE THE OVERHEAD THAT THEY DO. Plus you can trust an independent guy like Flelix because any nefarious interactions would most certainly be mentioned on review or feedback forums like this one. Do yourself a big favor, at least get a quote from this guy. Not only can he offer competitive & competent solutions but also the peace of mind that comes from a potential long term plumbing affiliation, knowing that you won’t get ripped off by unnecessary and OVERLY EXPENSIVE plumbing work.

My husband wanted a "handyman" for our exterior plumbing issues (a water hose spigot that leaked, and a pool water valve that had a leak, also). Bryan came over and diagnosed the problem and how long it would take him to fix it. We liked that he was a professional with expertise to handle and fix the issues. He communicates well and explains everything in detail. We also appreciated that he communicated every step so that there would be no surprises, and we knew what our bill would be. Needless to say, I believe we have found our "to go guy" for future house projects and fixes.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
