Five things to know about Kevin: 1. HE'S INSURED - My attorney wife absolutely insists that anyone who I hire to do work on our property be insured. Unscrupulous uninsured hired help will fake injuries while on your property and then sue you. She's seen it many times. My insurance company agrees with her. 2. HE WONT Burglarize your house! - for years I worked with a big hearted extremely competent general contractor who compassionately hired associates who had checkered pasts. I strongly suspect that one of those associates burglarized my house and stole $29,000 worth of stuff. It looked like an inside job. Kevin is an extremely patriotic 51-year-old ex naval aviator whose married with a kid. Kevin is a guy you can trust! 3. KEVIN IS EXTREMELY COMPETENT: he's been working in the plumbing area for over 30 years - started at age 17. He's worked on thousands of jobs over the years (249 on thumbtack alone) and is undefeated when it comes to plumbing problems. He's a very, very intelligent guy with dogged determination who will do whatever it takes to fix your plumbing problems. 4. HIS RATES ARE UNBELIEVABLY LOW- two "rooter " companies gave me free on site estimates of $275 to fix my clogged kitchen sink. Kevin came in at less than half that. We encountered some unanticipated complexities with my drain that could have resulted in a doubling of the cost from the "rooter" companies, but Kevin held firm to his original estimate. 5. KEVIN IS IN FREAKISHLY GOOD SHAPE- I'm a former athlete who lifts weights and is in generally good shape. But I was amazed at Kevin's ability to hoist a 100 pound "snake machine " on my roof to access an air exhaust pipe in order to clear my clogged pipe. Man, there ain't no way that I could have done that. In summary, as homeowners we all have multiple types of anxieties when it comes to hiring strangers to come into our homes to do work. Kevin allays all such concerns. He's the best guy I've ever contracted with, and if all Americans had his work ethic and sense of moral fortitude, than there would be no problems with our country.

David is fantastic; he is definitely going to be our go to guy for any handy services around the house from now on. We asked David for a couple of things that involved going down into our crawl space. He’s fixed our dryer exhaust, fixed plumbing leaks and installed a gas line. If I could give David 10 stars I would. He is says he will do the job and will work on it till the job is done. We couldn’t be happier finding a guy like him. I highly recommend using him for all your handyman needs.

Bajji arrived promptly and diagnosed the problem correctly. My external AC unit was blowing air but was not cooling the air. He said a fuse was broken and had to be replaced. The materials cost $80 and he mentioned that labor would cost around $150. Yet, when the final bill came it was for a total of $300. He said he took some effort to find the fuse by going to a few stores. In the end, I didnt want to argue and just paid him. I feel $300 is bit pricey for fixing the fuse.

Oscar re-routed the drain for our washing machine, snaked our bathtub, and adjusted the temp on a shower. The drain ending up being a significant amount of work, but got the machine working as we had hoped and made life a whole lot easier for us (who wants to air dry laundry?). Oscar and his nephew were great to work with. Meticulous work, prompt, thorough, and gave us a very reasonable deal for the work done. Came back multiple times to get the job done right. He'll be the first person I call for future jobs.

Our air conditioner quit suddenly during a heat spell ( 105!) a few weeks ago; another company gave us a quote to solve the problem, but Kevin was able to buy the part and do the labor, all for 1/2 the original price. 90 day guarantee also. And now we have air conditioning!

I recently bought a house with a central heating and air conditioning system. I was frustrated to find that the system did not work efficiently over the summer. I was then more frustrated to find that it barely worked at all this winter. I called Healthy duct cleaning because they had great reviews on another website as well.. They did a very thorough inspection and made multiple recommendations. I ended up having them clean out, sanitize, and rat proof my attic. They were very easy to work with, they were punctual, and they did an amazing job. They even did a good job cleaning up after themselves. I was very impressed. two months later I had them back out to replace all the ducting. The technician was a pleasure to work with. At every step of the way I have been provided with a detailed estimate of the recommended work. They have always itemized these estimates and helped me prioritize which jobs should be done first. They've been very accommodating with payments and with scheduling. I couldn't be happier!

Joshua came to our home to diagnose the problem with our air conditioning as it is not cooling properly. He took the time, even though I know he was crazy busy, to show me exactly what was going on. He has given us options to repair or replace. Joshua is outstanding in every area of customer service. Should you need service, call Ohana Air.

I was in the market for a new heating and air conditioning system. I had four companies come out, and these guys blew the competition out of the water. It was funny, I thought I wanted a more expensive system, and the gentleman who came out actually talked me out of spending more money because the return on my investment was not there. Who else does that? They say that like to treat everyone like family, and that is how I felt. The experience was a lot of fun too. The original phone call, service man, and Installers were absolutely great. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could.

He is super honest guy and makes the extra effort to make sure everything is done correctly. His prices are fair and you definitely will get your money's worth. I highly recommend Anthony for any heating/cooling needs and I would not hesitate to hire him again.

Requested a quote to check my AC that wasn't cooling, they responded within 10 min with estimate and told me it would be better to get a technicican to come and diagnose. I told them I can only meet them after 7-8pm due to my work schedule, so a team of techs arrived same day at 7:30 pm. Tim and Ryan were super-helpful and professional. They tracked down the leak in a refrigerant pipes, fixed it and recharged the system. After they made sure that the cooling is back and normal. Quick, professional and easy!

Micah is very professional. I hired him to replace the roof air vent due to potential water leaking. He checked the roof and attic, confirmed leaking existed, and explained to me patiently what happened on the vents. He found that although there are two vents, only one is used. He suggested installing one new vent. He did everything in a timely manner and cleaned up. His price is also very reasonable. Highly recommend!

I had the pleasure of working with Ian from Mercury Heating and Air Conditioning. Our air conditioner stopped working during a really hot weekend and Ian came out to our house on a Sunday and got our unit working again. It required a lot of maintenance and Ian had all of the expertise to fix the problem. He even looked around our property and advised on how to maintain and protect our other units. Ian is extremely fair and hard working. I highly recommend him for any heating and cooling issues.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
