Sean is an intuitive, insightful and compassionate healer. I went to him for help with my career. After a couple sessions it turned out it wasn't my career that was in need attention but other areas of my life. I had some internal mental blocks that we addressed. By doing some deep meditations, he helped me work through them. After each session I felt shifts happening in my life. They were subtle but very impactful. I can honestly say after working with Sean I feel more peaceful and content with where I am in my life. I strongly recommend using his services. It will be time and money well spent.

I don't usually write reviews but I am compelled to do today. I've been blessed to work with Debi for at least 10 years, through the years she has become my mentor, my wise woman and my balance adjuster. You know how you want to read all the help books that you see on Amazon or at a bookstore but you never actually get to? Well, Debi has read them all! You know how you need someone wise to push you to a solution or path that you already know is yours? Debi will know exactly what is best and objectively show you the way! My life has been a fabulous journey and many thanks for that to Debi. I've gotten praise, I've gotten a kick in the butt and the kind hug of all ver wisdom when I needed it the most. Bring everything to the table with this lady- career, relationships, the dilemmas of life and of course personal goals and resolution of conflicts and all will be so much better and it will just all flow. You will feel better and sturdier as you walk out her door.

Melissa's enthusiasm and positivity is infectious and present in everything she brings to the table. She's helped me question and think deeply about what I truly want in life, in both my career and my well being. She's pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and I've grown immensely. I highly recommend Melissa for anyone who is at a crossroads about their future!

Nicole played a big role in my career development. My issues have been trying to focus on what I want to do and how to do it, and working with Nicole on those issues put me on the right path for success. What I love about Nicole is that she forces you to see the big picture, ask yourself the hard (but necessary) questions, and then identify the steps to reach your goals. I look forward to using Nicole again when I need to navigate life and career changes, which I anticipate will reduce my fear of making those changes, knowing I have her in my back pocket.

I've been working with Arya for about 18 months and I could not be happier with my experience. In our sessions, we focus primarily on how to navigate potential career opportunities and how to understand behavioral patterns that may hinder personal and professional relationships. Without question, his coaching has completely changed the way I understand myself, my behaviors, and the way I hope to interact with the world. He has a pragmatic approach to meeting me where I am, whether that be practical tips to reduce anxiety at work or coping with uncertainty and risk about major life decisions. The sessions have become increasingly more insightful as he learns more and more about me. As others have mentioned, he's also extremely kind, open-hearted, and trained to tackle a spectrum of life's challenges. Far and away the best coach/therapist/spiritual advisor I have ever encountered.

A friend recommended that I approach Beth when I was considering a career transition from a senior research role at a Washington, DC-based foreign policy think tank. Beth's assistance has been invaluable. She has helped me frame a strategy to guide my job search that's built around a detailed appraisal of my skills and interests. Beth's experience working in different sectors means she has a lot of fresh insights and contacts to share. Her advice has improved the way I have conducted my job search and expanded my network in the process. Beth is very personable, an excellent listener, and is brimming with good ideas. I appreciate her enthusiasm and always leave our conversations feeling energized.

I have been seeing Emily for life coaching for a month - I'm working on sorting out some career and relationship challenges. We've been meeting over the phone when I travel and at a quiet coffee shop when I'm in town. Emily's communication is really wonderful. Sometimes the sessions feel emotionally difficult - and Emily is supportive of my journey. She's never judgmental. She asks deep questions. In my time with Emily I've made progress. I feel better about where I am. I'm really thankful for this great service she offers.

Dave helped me hone in on goals in all areas of my life - personal, career, fitness - and helped me figure out a workable, achievable plan for making progress in each area. The really great thing is how he interwove those areas - engaging me in conversations about my relationships, for example, while walking or riding our bikes - so that I was actually ACHIEVING progress in every area during the time we spent together. Dave is laser-focused and you have his undivided attention, he is 100% present and there for YOU. You never get the feeling he's rushing you or just killing time until his next client or appointment. Even when I haven't been able to show up in person, Dave will get on the phone with me to make sure I'm staying on track; our conversations have always helped me clarify my thinking. Maybe most importantly - Dave CARES. He really, truly cares about you and your life and helping you reach a more positive, balanced, healthier life. I feel blessed to have him in my life!!

I have previously worked with 2 coaches with varying experiences. Stacey, however, belongs to the subset of well-equipped and extremely competent coaches. I have been working with Stacey in a weekly hour long session since October 2016. She truly raises the bar by combining career, well-being, and life coaching. Her holistic approach to coaching allows for her (and myself) to see the bigger picture as she helps me to chip away at my goals and aspirations. Another quality that makes her stand out is how she presents information to me in a way that allows me to come to a solution through my own efforts. Often times I find myself hearing her voice in my head and using her (sometimes unrelated) knowledge to find a solution to challenges I have building my business. The direction and feeling of "being on the right track" that I've gained from working with Stacey has been a blessing. I appreciate each and every coaching session. I know that I will carry her knowledge and wisdom with me throughout my journey. I would highly recommend!

Shanti has been my life coach since September 2015 and has profoundly changed my outlook, which has had an incredible impact on my life and as a result, my career. She is so wise beyond her years and was very patient with me. I felt she was reasonably priced as well, which at that time in my life, was really important. I was very reluctant to try a life coach at first, but I'm so glad I did or at least I'm glad I found Shanti.

Congratulations on considering working with Shannon Gibbs as your personal coach. In my experience with Shannon, I can attest to the value she brought to our relationship. She’s unlike a traditional counselor, rather, she brings to the table her coaching hat. Shannon’s skills and innate and spiritual wisdom provided me exactly what I needed during a rough patch where I was struggling with identifying my personal gifts and how they could be best used in a career profession. She helped guide me through an exercise where I was able to discover, through feedback of close family and friends, the personal qualities that I possessed that will propel me to my next career. It took this guided instruction to get me there. She has a nurturing and supportive style that is invaluable if you are feeling stuck and need a little nudge or feel defeated, worn out, confused, dealing with a life crisis or are just plain scared and tired of being stuck. She has backbone, passion, commitment, wisdom and persistence. She is also a natural teacher which shines though in her coaching because her focus is that you be set free so you can soar on your own. It is in these coaching conversations that she talks with you to find the root of your desire to become all that you were created to be. Shannon always has a word of encouragement or correction or wisdom and it’s always delivered in compassion and constructively. She has inspired me to pursue a career passion that, up until now, seemed distant and unattainable. I still have a lot of work and growing to do, but Shannon taught me how to be open to these new possibilities so that I can thrive where I’m meant to be.

Jacquie is great. Having her available during my job search made the process so much less stressful. She helped edit my resume, condense and streamline my cover letter, connected me to people she knew in the industry, wrote referral letters and gathered useful feedback regarding my applications. She has a ton of insight and wisdom on how to beef up your resume, how to interpret interview feedback and how to stay grounded & motivated throughout your search. Working with her felt like having a cheerleader, editor, mentor and agent rolled into one awesome package, and I would absolutely recommend that anyone looking to switch jobs, enter the workforce or change careers utilize her services.

When Lindsay and I started our work together, I was lost and overwhelmed by the career search. I felt trapped into a prescribed role by my previous job skills, and unable to see a future where I could someday like my job and use my skills to better the world. Lindsay helped me to be realistic and practical about the experiences of my past and my goals for the future. We went through my work history and past roles, and she listened attentively to the challenges and triumphs that led me to where I am today. With her guidance, I was able to clearly come up with a framework for evaluating my next opportunities. She provided human accountability and self-imposed deadlines to keep me on track, and I am pleased to say our work ended with me feeling empowered and in control. Directly through her advice in how to seek out new jobs, I found a part-time role I'm working in now and have a final round interview with a potential dream employer. If you're not sure about career coaching or Lindsay in general, I can't recommend this experience more enthusiastically. She makes the daunting challenge of a career transition feel like an obvious step in the right direction, and for that I am very grateful.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

          • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
          • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
          • Defining your career goals
          • Creating a plan for job searching
          • Improving networking strategies and skills
          • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
          • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
          • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

          What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

          Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

          • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
          • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
          • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
          • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
          • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
          • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
          • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

          What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
