Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: With over 10 years of teaching experience in the Boston and Chicago area, I have worked with many students ages 3-70 of diverse backgrounds and learning styles. I have had the pleasure of helping students achieve their goals by winning competitions and state auditions as well as helping older adults rediscover their love for music. I would love to meet you and hear about how you would like to have music in your life! As a teacher, I use a mix of different methods that I've found to be effective over the years. This ranges from the Suzuki method to traditional conservatory training in the Russian and American styles, which I tailor specifically to the students' level and learning style. I emphasize an encompassing music education where lessons not only include technical practice and solo music, but also music theory, basic keyboard skills and ear training. I believe that these tools prepare the student to learn independently and understand any style of music when there is no teacher present. This is a challenging time for all of us -- coping with financial constraints and emotional stability. I'd be happy to offer sliding scale pricing for those in need, please let me know when you send me a message. **Currently, lessons will be conducted online due to the pandemic. However in the event that the student has a strong desire to have in-person lessons, there is the possibility of having sessions in a public space e.g. a park, while adhering to social distancing measures (masks on throughout, 6 feet apart). This is contingent upon my approval and the ability of the student to travel to a location near me.** ---------- Performance biography: A graduate of DePaul and Boston Universities, Dr. Chan has had the honor of working with musical luminaries such as Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Jaap van Zweden, Emanuel Ax and the Silk Road Ensemble during her residency with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has performed regionally and internationally at the Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, Beijing National Center for Performing Arts, Tokyo Opera City, and Seoul Arts Center. Beyond performing and teaching, she is passionate about exploring how music can enrich, empower and strengthen communities. As violinist and Co-Artistic Director of Boston-based String Orchestra “Palaver Strings”, she has been involved in various community projects such as the Carnegie Hall Lullaby Project(A song-writing project that pairs pregnant women with musicians to write and sing lullabies for their babies), Bridge Boston Chamber Music Institute and Boston Medical Center’s Arts Lab.

Su Yin brought enormous depth and professionalism to every (weekly) violin class I attended with my daughter Juliette for five years. Always supportive and genuinely encouraging, she introduced techniques, musical concepts, and complex rhythms that helped Juliette go from plateau to plateau in her playing. Juliette began studying violin with Su Yin at age five, and in the first year began performing in recitals. As a matter of course, Su Yin would show up early before performances to show support to her students, as well as offer last minute guidance. I was lucky to attend one of Sun Yin’s concerts and listen to her virtuoso playing. Seeing her perform certainly reaffirmed her as a teacher with a wealth of experience. Without reservation I strongly recommend Su Yin as a violin teacher.

Ms Su has taught my son Colin to play the violin for the past several years, first in person, and more recently via Zoom. She is his second teacher - he is now 13 but began the Suzuki method with his first teacher when he was 5. It has been absolute joy to hear her voice in our house during remote lessons. Ms Su is encouraging, knowledgeable, professional, humorous, and respectful towards her students. She has also been very flexible with the variety of music my son likes to try. (He prefers film scores, pop music and fiddle tunes.). She has always been patient with my son, especially as he navigates the audio settings of Zoom or needs to tighten his tuning pegs during a lesson. I highly recommend Ms. Su as a violin instructor!

I had not played violin for many years and then took it up again a couple of months ago. I had many concerns about various aspects of technique which I had lost and/or never developed previously. Su Yin provided on target, helpful input regarding my technical issues. She herself possesses an excellent "core" sound and has studied with teachers who are sought out for their technical expertise and methods. I am confident that Su Yin can help any student from beginner to advanced to improve their playing significantly.

With over 10 years of teaching, I have taught students ages 3-70 with a variety of learning styles and personal goals. • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Learning music is fun and a very rewarding experience, but what many forget is that it is a highly skilled art form that requires a lot of hard work and dedication before one can sound remotely decent.
