My son is about to graduate from college and with today’s competing job market, I wanted to make sure he started off on the right foot with a good solid job resume. Let’s face it, at 21, the most experience these young adults have in the workforce is limited at best and it’s hard to compete when you can’t translate your skills to real tangible experience. So I began my hunt to find a service that could help me build a resume that could showcase his skills and make him marketable. I did a search on Google and came across a website called “Thumbtack”. Thumbtack asks you to describe your project and they go out and find companies that can provide the service you’re looking for. Low and behold, I was sent 10 or more different companies along with quotes to review. I was immediately drawn to “The Edit Guru”. Rebecca is the owner and was not only very responsive, but she went the extra mile and handled every single little detail from the cover letter, to resume, and finally to his LinkedIn profile. She actually created a new profile for him! My biggest fear throughout this process was that my son would be shy and not great at talking about himself, but with Rebecca’s background and experience, my fears were put to rest. She did an amazing job! I would highly recommend Rebecca, “The Edit Guru” to anyone looking for a new resume or revamping an existing one. Resume writing is an art and she definitely knows how to get the job done in s spectacular fashion. Thank you so much Rebecca for all your hard work!! I'll definitely be back!

Lisa is an extraordinary career coach and resume writer. Due to a career change, I needed assistance re-writing and re-focusing my resume. Lisa was extremely helpful; she asked well-thought out questions which helped me to clarify where I wanted to go and what I wanted to highlight as part of my resume. She truly helped me to re-brand myself. Lisa is highly professional, personable and easy to work and communicate with. She took all my input and produced a wonderfully written and designed resume that will help me embark on my new career path. Her turn-around time was amazing, too. Within two days of contacting her, I had a brand-new resume in hand! I highly recommend Lisa's services to anyone who is in need of a career coach!!

Working with Sangeeta was a dream come true! Throughout the entire week or so that we revised and edited my senior thesis, she was almost always available, present, committed, and encouraging. I had no idea how genuinely engaged she would be when she offered to assist me. Finishing the project was stressful. I am a perfectionist. But my worries were reduced because of her. I cannot say how many times she wrote and responded to my Thumbtack messages and emails, reviewing 30,000 words more than once. I highly recommend Sangeeta, and, if you have questions, write her. I am sure that her way of going above and beyond will show in her response. Good luck with your project! :)

Jeff was fantastic. He is knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. He met a quick turnaround (10 days) deadline to edit my book for content, structure, and grammar. I would recommend him, and will definitely use him again for future projects! As an author, I was seeking an editor who would work with my voice to bring it out more - not change it. Jeff brought a great balance of clarity and direction, while balancing and polishing my voice - not inserting his. After interviewing two other editors and working with one in the past, this seems a rarer commodity than it sounds. His fees are also comparable to industry competitors, and reasonable. I will definitely use Jeff again for future editing and feedback about my writing!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
