FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Not so complicated: I have an hourly rate and do not charge for the time it takes me to commute round-trip, only the time I actually spend with the student. Overtime is charged only in 15 minute increments. If the commute is particularly far, I may charge a slightly higher hourly rate. My rates have actually dropped since I started tutoring.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
They get the first lesson (first hour) free, to see if we are a good match. There's no sense in tutoring someone with whom there is no compatibility. The smartest people don't necessarily make good teachers, and a good tutor must necessarily make a successful connection with a student in order to impart greater understanding of the subject matter.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I read frequently, and also compose communication daily at my job. I pride myself on excellent communication skills. The math concepts don't generally change, so simply working with students on a regular basis keeps those skills "fresh."
