I had a leaky toilet in my powder room which ruined some of the flooring. Andia came with several professionals and they replaced my flooring and installed a new toilet. They were totally professional and did a great job. I would use them again and recommend them to anyone who needs help with a project.

We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

Robin built us a door/wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. It took 3.5 days (including the necessary drying time). We were impressed by the quality of his framing. He had great judgement about where to place the door. He relocated the recessed lights in order to center them in the newly created hallway. Robin made sure that the molding, wall texture, door and door knobs would match our existing stuff. I cannot wait to hire Robin back to replace our carpets with hardwood flooring.

If I could I'd give Benito 6 stars out of 5. He did an excellent job, he was always on time and worked very hard to get us exactly what we wanted. He definitely takes pride in his work. We had Benito basically redo our entire house. He installed hardwood floors downstairs & on the stairs, baseboards throughout the entire house, carpet in all bedrooms and vinyl for the bathrooms. I'd certainly hire Benito again, and I'd recommend him to family & friends.

Emmy and her crew were communicative, personable and efficient. They did a fantastic and quick job of taking apart a heavy and bulky ping pong table, relocating it to another floor and assembled it back together making it look easier said than done. We will definitely utilize Emmy's services again and recommend her highly.

Mo is an amazing talented carpenter. He built me a walk in closet from scratch in 3 days. He provided the design and ideas on how to make best use of the small space I had available & I couldn’t have been happier with the results. He is very professional and precise in his work and very reasonable in pricing. I am so impressed with quality of his work that I am having him make me a custom built vanity and bookcase as well. He also installed my hardwood flooring and cabinets which were very complicated to install. I highly recommend his services. Be sure to give him advance notice though as he is extremely busy but the results are definitely worth the wait.

We completely remodeled our master bathroom. This included floor and shower tile, new lights/fan/toilet/mirrors/vanity/pocket door, cabinet resurfacing (kept the old cabinet insides, sinks and counter tops), and overall painting. I chose Eddie because he had great reviews, was very friendly, and was always punctual with our meetings. Eddie did an excellent job on all the parts of the bathroom. The 30 year old cabinets look brand new. The tile is beautiful. All the mirrors, door, cabinets and accessories were hung very professionally. He definitely takes your ideas and works with you to make them feasible. The entire project took a little longer than I'd expected (3+ weeks), but it was worth it. The only slight issue I have is I wish I'd known how smelly the "hot mop" day was beforehand, so I could keep the tar smell from the rest of the house! Also, he provided a list of materials I was supposed to purchase for the project, but it wasn't complete at the start so I had to go back to the store a few times to buy more items. Overall, I'm very satisfied with Eddie's work, and will definitely be calling him for more jobs in the future.

Lauro and Omar did such a great job installing tile in our bathrooms and laundry room that we had them also install our hardwood floor throughout the house and do the back splash behind the kitchen counter. We are very pleased with the results. They are very fair priced and very polite. Looking forward to having them working on my next project.

Steve responded quickly to my inquiry regarding putting in a wall mounted dog door. He arrived on the designated day and time; even arriving a few minutes early. He professionally went to work installing my very expensive “Hale” dog door. He protected my kitchen nook floor and outside area where work was to done. His attention to detail and cleanup was great. The dog door needed to be placed under a window, and he was able, with confidence, adjust electrical wires in order to accommodate the door. He is very friendly and his price for this project was very reasonable. I will definitely use him again for other projects that I need done. I am very happy with his work. My photo of this door came out horizontal, instead of vertical, but hopefully it shows how well Steve installed my double wall Hale dog door.

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

We decided to install hardwood floor in all of the down stairs and tiles in bathrooms. We consider 5 local reputable flooring companies and out of these five companies "Hardwood and Tile Discounters" were the most professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. Their price very good. They delivered a good quality workmanship, and they warranty their work. I have recommend them to some of my relatives, and they have had similar experience. So i strongly recommend Hardwood and Tile Discounters Regards, Sam G

CJ Hardwood Floors explained everything and answered any questions we had. True professionalism, did a quality job, was on the job when they said they would be. Always asked if the work times were good for us, made it a point to work in a manner that allowed us to function without preventing the work from being done in a timley manner.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
