I called a different contractor who wanted to tent the house before I called Slate. Gilbert came the day after my call and after offering a number of treatment possibilities, said he could treat the tiny hole found in my ceiling (that was dropping debris) by drilling little holes and injecting Fipronil around the area. Where orange oil is a repellant, fipronil is not and would continue to eradicate termites when they came in contact with it. 5 days later, the treatment took less than an hour and cost was very reasonable compared to other treatments- still guaranteed for a year! The whole process was painless and professional. I am a big fan of Slate Termite!

Outstanding experience! First, I contacted Manual looking for a pest control company; only to find out later in the week, I actually needed a termite inspection. So I had to call and let Manual know my priorities had changed and I would not need him. Manual remained very professional; he thanked me and still sent me my bid for the job along with his business card. I thought to myself what a professional young man! The following week, the termite inspector gave me a bid that had very minimal damage at a reasonable cost to repair. Therefore, I had the work completed. And... sent a email and asked Manual if he would like to come out and complete a one time spray inside and out we could then discuss a annual contract. I have signed his contract; all because he displayed a professional image of his company and himself! Looking forward to working with you Manual!

Like so many people, I live in a condo complex that is under inspected and under treated for termites. Subterranean termites destroyed a bathroom several years ago. Now termites are having a go at my new wood floor! And let's not even get started about the attic. Another company inspected and found nothing but one spot. We started looking more closely, and found evidence of several more spots. That's when I call Hi-Tech. After a top to bottom free evaluation, they located several trouble spots, offering great solutions for each. I was amazed at how thorough Mike, the technician was. He managed to climb into some pretty tight spots on a very hot day to treat in our attic. Very professional. Hard working. Also kudos to the general manager, Jeff, who conducted the inspection. Pick this company!

My clients and myself always were impressed on the work performed by Flatline. I never had a complaint from any customer but only positive comments and thanking me for using such professional termite company on their behalf.

I didn't see Daniel King they set up the appointment to our convenience to inspect our house. Blake made a thorough inspection and set up an appointment. The two workers arrived on time, were very considerate and did their work in less time than I expected. The test is if the termites are destroyed --and we will ask for a free inspection that they offered in a year.

This company is truly exceptional in its commitment to customer service. I unwittingly bought termite-infested redwood (didn't realize this until it was installed) from Home Depot for a front yard fence. Valencia came out immediately and treated the fence, taking care to do it in a way that minimized staining or cosmetic damage to the freshly stained and sealed wood (including drilling holes in the posts in inconspicuous spots to insert the treatment chemicals into the wood in order to reach the nests). They helped me understand the life cycle of termites and developmental stages so that I could demonstrate to Home Depot through photographic evidence that the termites were already in the wood when I bought it. They agreed to WAIT to receive payment until I got reimbursement from Home Depot, which took about 6 weeks. Have you ever heard of any other company doing this??? While they were here, they also did a free annual inspection of the other areas of my home following up from their tenting last year when I bought the house. A month or so after the fence treatment I saw some bugs on the fence, and took pictures to send to Valencia Termite. They immediately got back to me & said they weren't termites. It's like I have my own personal entomologist on call! I will never use any other termite company. They are outstanding in every regard.

Mariners Pest Control was very prompt in quoting my job. I was unhappy with my previous Pest Control provider, and was looking to make a change. Mariners Pest Control provides a better service than those bigger companies by thoroughly inspecting and treating the outer perimeter of the property, and the technician also took the time to make sure everything was A-OK inside my home as well. We've had a problem with spiders over the last 6 months, and a member of my household formed an abscess from a spider bite that in my opinion would NOT have happened had I been with Mariners Pest Control – lesson learned. I'm so happy I found Mariners Pest Control. The customer service experience overall has been fantastic, and I feel they give a much more personal service than what I was receiving before with a larger company. I really feel like my spider problem is being taken seriously and handled appropriately now, along with preventing the usual spring and summer ant issues. Thank you Nathan and the Mariners Pest Control team!

Mike Cassidy solved the rat problem that another exterminator could not resolve, even after a year of trying. Mike was creative, effective, polite, and always on time and thorough. I've already recommended Astro Termite and Pest Control to friends and colleagues, and I'll continue to mention them to anyone with a pest problem.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get rid of termites?

The best way to get rid of termites is to act fast. Termites are a problem that will only get worse — and no matter how much you want them to, they usually don’t magically move out on their own. There are three main types of termites: drywood, dampwood and subterranean. Drywood and dampwood termites sneak through cracks in your exterior paint, nail holes, and gaps near windows and other openings and begin to eat through your wood. Subterranean termites enter your house from the ground up by creating mud tunnels. In all cases, they survive by eating the wood of your house. The type of termites you have can steer the treatment plan.

Methods of termite extermination include fumigation, use of pesticides, and use of natural elements that are poisonous to the bugs. The extent of your termite infestation will help determine the treatment method. If you have drywood or dampwood termites that have infiltrated all aspects of the wood in your home, the pest control pro may recommend enclosing the whole house in a tent and gassing the termites via fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, often the entire footprint of the home must be treated by drilling liquid treatments into the slab or foundation of the home to exterminate the colonies. In any case, once you see signs of termites, it’s time to take action and call a pest pro.

What are the signs of termites in your home?

When you see signs of termites in your home, call a trusted pest control professional as soon as possible to handle the situation. Termites feed on wood, meaning they eat through the wood that makes up the frame, floors and other components of your house. Most people don’t know they have termites until they discover the damage done, because termites remain hidden underground or inside the wood they are eating. Keep on the lookout for these signs of termites:

    • Water bubbles in your interior or exterior paint: If you poke at what look like paint bubbles and find termite droppings inside, it’s a sign of termite infestation.
    • Frass: This is a fancy term for termite poop. Keep your eyes peeled for what look like six-sided salt and pepper droppings.
    • Mud tubes: Subterranean termites move between their earth home and your house by building mud tunnels. Mud tubes under or along the side of your house or foundation are a sure sign of a termite infestation.
    • Wings or swarming near your home: As a new colony is looking for a home, they fly (swarm), then shed their wings and burrow into nearby wood.
    • Softening of wood or hollowed-out wood: Termites don’t like paint, lacquer varnish or other wood finishes, so they’ll eat inside the wood and leave the exterior finish like a shell.

    Are termites harmful to humans?

Termites are harmful to humans in that they can eat a home from the inside out. But unlike some other insects, termites don’t carry infection, nor do they bite or feed off people like parasitic bedbugs. So while they’re not harmful to your health, they can be extremely harmful to your wallet. The EPA reports that every year termites cause billions of dollars of structural damage in the United States. Immediate action and treatment is the best approach if you see signs of termites. The national average cost for an exterminator ranges from $250 to $400, but costs may be higher if you have a whole house infestation on your hands. Here are a few examples of average cost:

    • Standard liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot. An extermination company may have a minimum service fee, such as $150, to come out and provide treatment, no matter how small the space.
    • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites including foaming and drilling into concrete slabs: $4-$5 per linear foot.
    • Liquid treatment of a 2,000-square-foot home for subterranean termites: approximately $400.
    • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home. Pros measure fumigation costs in cubic feet. Fumigation costs can also be affected by the number of stories in your home.
