I really was surprised how fast they were. They really know what they are doing. The cost was so much less than I expected this to be. I don't know why I have never hired moving labor before considering how often I move. This was a very good experience and I will use their service again the next time I move. Thank you!

We hired 3 of Santos' team to help us unpack two PODS. They turned up early and got right down to work, moving furniture and boxes into our house and garage. They handled everything with great care, unwrapping and folding the blankets we had used. They placed everything where we wanted it to be, they assembled the furniture and ensured that everything was working properly before they left. The guys were friendly and professional. I would absolutely recommend Two Friends Movers to anyone looking for help with their move.

Edgar and his team helped me move my stuff in a U-box shipped long distance from another state to an apartment here in San Francisco. Because the U-box arrival date was only tentative I had to reschedule my moving time with them twice. Edgar was very responsive and understanding to my requests and tried his best to make the time work. On the moving day they arrived on time, did the job faster than expected, and were professional about handling stuff. They are also very cheerful, which makes it pleasant to do business with them!

Patrick was great to work with. I was moving down the hall of the same building and didn't want to pack/ unpack. He was really flexible, helped me move all the big furniture, put a bunch of things in storage and even helped me put away some stuff!

Albion was great. After finding them on thumbtack I called and asked them about our planned move. They gave us an estimated time, talked through the things we could do to help, and said they'd be there at 10am on moving day. A week and a half later at 10am exactly they knocked on our door. The whole move went great, they moved our TV, a custom built computer and many other things we had trouble packing. It turns out they had to share an elevator at the new building, which slowed them down a bit. Had this not been the case I think their original estimate would have been spot on. Even with this slow down it wasn't that far off. On top of that their rates are very reasonable. Go with Albion.

Very happy with my experience. Initially, I was nervous hiring online, as I didn't get the sense that the companies recognized he scope of the move. I was moving from an 1500sq ft house, but my garage was packed with stuff we'd accumulated over the years. I had poor experience in the past, with companies underestimating and then not able to finish. Scott took the time to come see my house to understand just how big a move it was. As a result, he recommended 2days to move (1day for boxes, 1 day for furniture). This worked great. The price was higher than other companies, but the level of service was worth it. The team was very diligent and careful with our goods. Won't be moving again for a while, but will remember Scott and his team next time I do.

Could not be more impressed with ReloCal Moving! We are complete slackers who chose to move last minute on the weekend. Thankfully they could accommodate and were a treat to work with. Sam was super helpful on the phone. Robert and Jake were great! They gave us a call when they were on the way- showed up on time- and made the moving process a breeze (saying something, we were like half prepared ha!) The guys were hilarious and brightened what would normally be a very stressful experience. They also treated all our very cheap ikea junk like priceless antiques. Those guys work fast too! They were awesome and the move was...dare I say...fun?! Definitely recommending them to any friends looking for awesome movers in the bay. Thanks y'all!

We needed a moving company and quick. It was only A2B Movers a moving company we found were very highly recommended. Most of their customers also mentioned that the company was fair in pricing and did not deviate on the pricing. I have to say this is absolutely true as we too allotted out moving work to them and they never changed the terms or charges us anything extra. There was no damage and it was a pleasure working with them.

Jeff & Jesus came down to the SoBay to help us move apts on labor day weekend with no extra/hidden charges or hoops to jump through. I was really impressed with their flexibility (i had to change my move date bc the new apt wasnt ready) & relieved they were still avail to move us that sunday. I still cant believe they moved everything into the new place & set up the furniture how i wanted to, in just 2 hours! I was totally relieved, thankful & grateful for their help. They were respectful, efficient, punctual, & personable. I will absolutely be using their services in the future.

Aleks is like a real-life super hero. I was stuck on a flight when my new couch was delivered. The delivery guys left it on my patio while I was flying, so I needed a seriously strong team to get it upstairs and into my home that night before it got stolen or rained on. Aleks and his moving partner saved the day! They showed up within a few hours, brought blankets to protect my stair rail, and carefully hauled it up—no sweat! I imagine a lot of other movers would have walked away because it was a tricky space to maneuver and it was around 9 pm—when most people would rather be done for the day! These guys are seriously strong, no-nonsense, and focused! They also assembled a pesky table for me, cleaned up, and were friendly, polite, and professional in the process. They didn’t rush or get annoyed or frustrated. They simply got it done despite the time and were very nice from start to finish! Thanks, Alecks and Roman! You’re amazing!

Was absolutely a smooth transaction. I had a labor only move to move a heavy piece of furniture upstairs. Nick and his colleague breezed through it and both the furniture and the house were amply protected through the entire move. Would definitely recommend him to my friends.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

This guy was definitely on top of it, definitely knows the ins and outs of moving and packing. Even corrected some things that I overlooked to keep my stuff safe and intact. Wife and kids even got a kick out of him and enjoyed his company at the same time. He's obviously a family guy. They say moving happens in threes and I've already recommended two other people to Robert. This guy has worth ethic and common courtesy in which you don't see in people anymore. Robert definitely deserves the work if you're looking for his services! 100 percent money well spent!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
