Skidmore Business Solutions was engaged as a strategic business consultant for our start-up e-commerce company. With Bob Skidmore's extensive experience in distribution, marketing and customer development, he provided us with the insight and networking we needed to effectively build out our online business model. He also made numerous introductions to key product and service vendors in our industry that were extremely valuable. Bob exceeded all of our expectations and I would recommend him for any engagement that he is being considered for.

I learned more than writing. Also, I enjoy spending time with Lois because I learn so many things that I never came across before. She makes things understandable and easy to digest. I can see the things we talk about in everyday life and value the things I learn. I get to apply what I learn with Lois since it is very simple to use.

I cannot say enough about Thinque Prep and Joyee Lin. He is dedicated to his students success and does a very thorough job of preparing them for the ACT or SAT test. My son, Zack, who is very bright but requires a lot of patience worked with Joyee over the summer and brought his composite ACT score up from 30 to 33. His math score increased a full 4 pts. and he scored a 35 in English. Thinque Prep has other services related to tutoring and college application preparation. Zack will be working with Joyee on his college application essays. Joyee is in California and we are in Texas but this was never an issue as the sessions are done via video chat. The office manager Jen was great to work with and the appointment process was easy to navigate. I found the rates to be very competitive for like services. If there was a way to give extra stars I would!!

I have been pondering in my ❤ for over twenty years to take a chance with my writing of songs and pomes. When I finally decide to take a chance on my maniusripts, I found the right person for me. I finally decide to take a chance and spend some money. Not so much for speeding the money, it was my pride. If you want something done, then do it. Thankyou Melanie, we need you. Skip Press displayed outstanding literary writing skills when he edited my romance novel. He turned it into an entertaining, compelling, fluent, and beautiful story that will be memorable to all its readers. Besides, Skip is personable, reliable, and gets the work finished on time without any hassle. As a result of my good experience working with Skip, I highly recommend him to other authors. Annie S. Mauri was by far the easiest to talk to, friendly and above all, intelligent, organized and creative minds I have ever encountered. Always terrified writing my own resumes, with several bad and uncomfortable experiences with third party companies who never seemed to listen or convey the information I gave them, it was a true breath of fresh air to find Mauri. Not only did she actively listen to me go on and on with the patience of saint, but was kind enough to help me find the self esteem and for the first time in my life, have a resume I not only feel comfortable representing me, but proud to present to perspective employers. Too bad there aren't 100 more like her.

Cynthia is my writing consultant and she is amazing. From the first session with her my writing jumped on track and began to flow. She not only inspired me creatively, she helped me focus on the mechanics of breaking down my story. Work with her - she will help you get the story you want to tell, out.

Brad prepared a quality resume & cover letter for me. We met at his office and spent close to an hour learning about my sales background and what I wanted to achieve in a job. I even referred a friend who hired him based on my suggestion. Upon my initial resume I never asked for a re-write till now. I wasn't receiving any responses on the positions I applied for. Brad went out of his way to work with me on some re-write adjustments and now I feel 100% more confident. I strongly recommend his services.

When working with a professional writer a business has to consider the writer's qualifications. Christopher from Ghost Strategies has a science background(Aeronautical Engineering), is an attorney and has written professionally for over 20 years. Because of this background he is very detailed oriented and is used to meeting deadlines. His science background means that he considers the substantive topic as well as good editing and writing practices in performing any project. He was an asset to my law firm and to my clients over a number of years.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
