Professional, on time. John is tutoring my 10 year old son in math, specifically, common core math. John is very patient which is what my son needs. I try to help him but I lose my patience which frustrates both of us. I am glad John is able to help and I hope my son will improve his math skills. John has tutored Christopher twice only so I hope this review is helpful. So far, I would recommend John.

We hired Dr. K to help my son with pre-calculus. After receiving 1x week tutoring for 1 semester his grade improved from a D- to a C+ and his teacher reported that she was pleased with the significant growth he had made. According to my son "Dr. K is very kind, knowledgeable, reliable, and understanding. He tried to figure out what my learning style was and worked with me. He asked what I was learning and we did problems related to that work." We highly recommend him to others who are struggling in math.

John helped me raise my GRE score significantly. Working with John helped me gain the skills and tools I needed to reach (just above) my goal score. We studied the content of the GRE but also strategies for approaching problems likely to be found on the GRE, which proved invaluable. John was patient and encouraging throughout our tutoring and always gave me the extra confidence I needed to help me get through tough problems. It’s nice to have someone cheering you on when you’re trying to achieve a score that might seem hard or unachievable. John made the process of studying for the GRE as painless and fun as possible!

Nando is the best spanish teacher ever. He can teach you in so many different ways ! It is really fun. He instantly adapts to your way of learning. I have had several tutors and i am not saying the others were bad, but Nando is definitely my FAVOURITE ! You could definitely pay him more than he is asking for since the quality you get from his lessons is superior to any other private courses in language schools.

Tara was our amazing French tutor for one intensive, full-week course, for both my husband and myself, right before we moved to France. She is bright, intelligent, on-trend...and was able to customize our lessons to our needs ( I needed practical grammar & conversation, at an Intermediate level)... And my husband was a complete beginner, with concentration on business & finance by the end of the week. But more than academics, Tara is patient, warm, friendly, understanding and upbeat! We even had lunches out, speaking French, to help us with French culture, customs and manners!! We recommend her 100%!!

Minok is an excellent math tutor for my daughter. Beginning of the school year my daughter has had some difficulties with her trig-algebra 2 class. She would like to improve her grade and prepare for finals. Minok came in fully prepared. I really appreciate that she genuinely cares about the student and she spent a lot of time preparing her class ahead of the time. Usually she will check with my daughter with what is on going in her class, and by time of tutoring she came with extra materials and practice to help the kids. By doing tutorial with her once a week, She was able to help my daughter improve her grade from B to an A and so far in the new trimester my daughter has been getting all As in her math test. We are very happy with her and will highly recommend her to all my friends.

Kathleen helped my daughter who was a junior in AP Spanish. Kathleen was patient and kind , listening well to my daughter and working through her problem areas. She was also very flexible with scheduling the lessons working with my daughters school work and extracurricular activities. With Kathleen’s help, my daughter brought her B to a solid A.

Yevgeny helped me with business calculus class. This class was extremely important for me to pass as most 4 year colleges I was trying to get into wanted me to take it. During the 16 week semester, Yevgeny would come twice a week to help me with my homework and go over each chapter in depth. We would spend almost two hours each session on different problems and he would show me how to do each one. However, he doesn't do each problem for you but instead would have me do the problem on my own and give me help if I needed it. He made sure I understood each chapter we would go over before going onto the next. Yevgeny is a great person who really cares about the success of those he is tutoring. He understands many different math courses and is really smart. Without his help I wouldn't have passed my class and gone on to transfer to my 4 year college. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of help in any math course.

Lina is an absolutely fantastic tutor. I have had Spanish lessons and tutorials on and off for the past 15 years and she stands out as exceptional. She is very open and flexible to adapting the tutorials to whatever you would like to study/discuss and suits you best (which contrasts somewhat to a few previous Spanish tutors I have had in the past, who forced me to learn things I had already learned previously). Her enthusiasm and encouragement are second to none, and her many years of teaching are very clear. Having taught many students in private tutoring for maths and science myself, I was certainly inspired by her teaching methods. Her tutorials are a joy, and even after only a few lessons I am already a lot more confident in my speaking and listening skills. Thank you Lina!

Anish was extremely professional and really worked with my learning style. He motivated me to stay on top of my GRE study, and reviewed my practice exams to pinpoint what we needed to review together. On top of that, he even helped me polish my personal statement! I would strongly recommend him to anyone for private tutoring!

So far so good. My son did 3 sessions already (1hr. per session) with Vera Liang and we are still continuing his Mandarin tutoring with her using his High School provided Mandarin textbook. The schedule though is not as flexible because Vera just got a full-time job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

Need an English Tutor

Mountain View, CA

  • Details
Hello tutors of Thumbtack, My name is Achilles and I'm an aspiring writer and storyteller looking to further my skills in these arts. However I have always had two issues with writing, which I would a English tutor to help me with- the time for our lessons would be split evenly on working through these two issues 1. I need someone to guide me in the fundamentals of grammar including punctuation and form. I would need a tutor to not only instruct me on the rules of grammar but to also give a bit of context on their origin and use in conversational English. 2. As for applying what I have learned, instead of the traditional school based worksheets or SAT prep I would like to apply what I have learned on my own creative projects. - I need someone to engage me- talk with me, keep me focused and ask questions about the stories and projects I work on. Ideally someone could teach me as we go, and outline the mistakes in my work and teach me what I’m doing wrong- and what I’m doing right, in terms of grammar and the flow of the writing.
