Oscar was about figure out that the water leaking through the ceiling of my stairwell was caused by water getting onto the bathroom floor rather than any problem with the shower drain or the sealing inside the shower itself. He did great work with his cameras and inspection tools to eliminate possible causes and avoid a drain replacement scenario, which would have been a costly job.

Omar did a great job of unclogging our bathroom sink. He was very thorough and cleaned up the bathroom after he was done. He was very informative and made sure to explain what he was doing and any tips to prevent this happening again. I would have given 5 stars but he was about 30 minutes late for the appointment, which I understand happens sometime but I would have appreciated a text to let me know. Overall I would definitely recommend Omar!

Max is AWESOME! We'd been having problems with our water heater for MONTHS, and four other plumbers had tried to fix it and failed (although of course they all still had to be paid ...) Max responded immediately to my request for quote; he came out to the house the next day, was 100% competent and businesslike, got the parts ordered, followed up on scheduling for the install, and two business days later THE PROBLEM IS FIXED -- at last! Highly recommend him. THANK YOU MAX!!!!!

Routine water heater swap - yeah right. What started out as thinking our water heater was broken, turned out to be a long overdue clogged sewer lateral. Worst case scenario. While I'm not that happy about the sewage overflow situation which could have been better mitigated (and we still need to beach the hell out of that room), the solutions and options offered by Ali were professional and spoke of his experience. To unclog the piping, snaking was attempted but failed, hydrojetting was attempted but failed (with a mess of sewage). Finally we got a camera down there to find a wall of something about 50 feet down from the mechanical room to a spot under the sidewalk. Digging 4 feet down, to find actually a pretty good condition clay lateral. Ali's man Valentino (a skilled gentleman), cut the clay and replaced it with a riser in order to install a cleanout for future maintenance. Once done, they hydrojetted for another hour to clear 7-8 months worth of waste. The camera was once again sent through to find that a portion of the clay lateral had shifted and created uneven surfaces including some penetration of tree roots. While most plumbers would probably recommending an immediate replacement, Ali recommended that since it wasn't fully collapsed, we should simply clear out the lateral as routine maintenance rather than spend all the money to replace the pipe. I appreciate his direct communication, no sales pitch, and brief coaching through the process. While I do have 10 yrs of construction experience, and his price was not the cheapest, he certainly delivered on time and without any sense of price gouging.

Communication was great- they responded to our request very quickly and were able to come fast. However, our drain problem was in a multi-unit condo, and possibly beyond the scope of their equipment/capabilities. They used a 20 ft snake that ultimately got stuck in our system. We had to escalate to our building management, who brought out plumbers used to commercial properties and eventually resolved over a couple weeks. Not the plumber's fault, as they were not able to know the extend of our drain issues. 5 stars for communication and effort, 3 for incomplete resolution - so 4 star average.

Robert offered us the best quote for a toilet install and also offered to take away our old toilet at no extra charge. All the other plumbers that I called were quoting me between $155 - $375 for the exact same work that Robert did and none of them “offered to take away our old toilet”. When I asked if they could take it away, they quoted between $50-80 extra to take away the toilet. Glad I found Robert before scheduling with one of the other plumbers. We will definitely use Robert’s services again for any needed work at our home.

I was able to schedule estimates with 5 contractors for my bathroom remodel. Each definitely had their own approach with a few being extremely pushy trying to talk me into doing work I didn't want to do! I believe Green line was the 3rd appointment I had and Manuel Sr & his son Manuel Jr definitely stood out to my family and I. They listened to what we wanted, gave me a few options and honest recommendations (which actually involved less total work = less money). I really appreciated the honest no pressure approach. It was also very clear to me that they had a lot of experience because they were able to point out a few things that no other contractor brought to my attention. Service: I'd say the entire process was pretty seamless, Jr or Sr were always available through call or text, no issues with cleanliness or picking up materials. They use a progress payment system so we paid them as they completed certain phases of work which I really liked. They were able to recommend retailers for the finish materials which was very helpful. Work Quality: Craftsmanship excellent, tiles were set beautifully and look stunning. About half way through we decided to go with their recommendation of doing level 5 texture through the vanity area into the bathroom (which they gave a VERY good price for), this was a great suggestion as it really helps in bringing a cleaner modern look. Paint, vanity and fixture installation were all done very nicely. Over all very satisfied, we will be calling Green Line back to do the guest bath in a few months. Price: They were not the cheapest estimate I received. I decided to hire them because they felt trustworthy. Which is a hard thing to achieve after one meeting. However I am EXTREMELY pleased with the price I paid for the finished product. They explained to me in out initial meeting that this type of finish work requires a certain amount of money to do properly which I completely understand now. They were also not the most expensive which is surprising for the transformation they accomplished. Thanks guys! -Christina

TL;DR: Valentino was excellent, and I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. I had some hesitations about hiring a plumber, after all the stories I've heard about plumbers charging exorbitant prices. For my disconnected kitchen sink pipe, a couple plumbers quoted me very high prices. When I came to Valentino, he charged me a fair price that was much less than the other two quotes. And moreover, he came on time and got the job (which actually wasn't so simple) done well. Super nice, super professional, and super honest. Hands down, I'd hire him again, and would recommend him to my friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
