Pete came to help a first time dog trainer (myself) with my new rescue dog. Just as he says is needed for success he was calm cool collected. He gave a lot of ritual information to help with the relationship of me and the dog. She already does better on walks (yes same day) with using the prong collar. We worked with her on place and the same day she is using the spot to relax which has made her less anxious! Very knowledgable and is straightforward on how to train your dog and most importantly yourself! We are key to our dogs success.

Tammy is a wonderful dog trainer! I have had my dog for three years now. In the first year of adopting my dog from rescue center; he had a lot of anxiety and bark non- stop. In about seven months with working with the techniques Tammy would suggest he no longer barks when I'm not home. I encourage and recommend Tammy as your dog trainer . She has a lot of knowledge on the psychology of dog behavior , and you will see your dog have major improvements.

We have been sending our dog to Susan at Nu Pawspective for about a year now. Susan is an intelligent trainer with a "dog whisperer" instinct for dogs. Our dog loves going with Susan every day and always comes home exhausted and happy. We are thankful to have someone whom we trust to care for our dog as much as Susan does.

Rusty at Pawgress dog training has been an absolutely amazing trainer for our reactive cattle dog/ border collie mix. He has really given us so much information and shined light on some new techniques and strategies! We have found it so useful to have our dog practice with his dogs and we love the feedback and guidance! His PDFs have helped us to be able to practice and apply at home in between trainings as well! We can’t thank Rusty enough for the work this far! We look forward to training every week as we see our dog (and us!) make strides!

Maj is kind, a good listener, and a deeply empathetic human being. She also happens to use those skills as an excellent dog and dog-human trainer:) She’s prompt, responsive and pretty darn reasonably priced. I’d highly recommend her to anyone looking to solve a dog issue or just deepen their existing relationship with their animals. Really, there should be more stars to give her:)))))

Emily is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable dog trainers I have ever met. I contracted her when I adopted a rescue with severe separation anxiety and who never had any formal training. Within 6 weeks my pup mastered basic commands, and we were well on our way to overcoming his separation anxiety. I would recommend Emily without hesitation to anyone looking for expert help!

Emily is fantastic! She began working with our 6 month old weim only 4 weeks ago, and he is already a different dog. He has learned to be better on the leash, developing better response to commands such as sit and stay. Emily truly listens to the needs of the family and is very responsive to the individual dog needs. She is dependable, responsible and when you meet her, you can just feel her passion and dedication to puppy training. She sent us regular daily updates about our puppy's progress, including video clips. When we first started, our puppy was shy of other dogs, but after only 2 weeks, he was braver and more assertive in the dog park with other pets. Emily is a pleasure to work with and we have just signed up for another 4 weeks of training to continue building on the progress our doggies has made. She is down to earth and caring. She is also not afraid to say when something isn't working, which we truly appreciated. Our dog didn't like the halti leash, so after a couple of weeks of training, Emily came up with a different leash option and was very honest about the reasons for the change. It's refreshing to work with such a professional. Thank you, Emily, for all your dedication and hard work!

We have been working with Shauna since our Doberman was 10 weeks old. We started off with her beginner class and went all the way though to get our dog AKC CGC certified. Shauna is a great trainer who taught us a lot of great techniques. She is very patient and our doberman loves her.

Cannot find a more knowledgeable or caring dog trainer than Tricia. I took my Scottie and Min Pin to classes with Tricia for years until I moved out of the area. When I went out of town I would leave my dogs with Tricia to care for them, they loved her and her dog Zeus to death! The move made me appreciate her even more. Everyone comments on how well behaved my dogs are and I always attribute it to the best dog trainer in the country.

Phoebe B trained our German Shepard dog and of all the trainers we have used she made the most progress in helping the dog to become more comfortable with different people and situations. She also took care of both our dogs and the dogs are very excited when they see Phoebe. Phoebe is very personable, open, and patient. We liked her a lot and had she not moved away from our area, we would continue to have her train and care for our dogs. She is also a very sincere and nice person! Would highly recommend her.

I highly, highly recommend Lisa! When me and my two doggies moved in with my boyfriend and his dog, my male dog began peeing all over the house and growling at my boyfriend’s dog. It was a disaster and we were at a loss as to how to handle. Lisa came over and gave us tools to help solve the problem. We’re in a much better place now! Lisa is very responsive, extremely knowledgeable about doggie behavior and psychology and best of all doesn’t make the doggy mom feel like a failure

Simply put Koru K9 is awesome. I've made 3 behavior change sessions in the course of 1.5 months and puppy is way way better. She used to be a very nervous dog, afraid of everything and anything. Now she is calm, relaxed, walk beautifully by our side, doesn't bark to other dogs walking around. She still has lots to learn and training is an ongoing process, Koru K9 will teach you how to make your dog a better dog, they are great!

Sue has been working with me and my two min pins, Coco and Tootsie on behavior modification issues. I was at the point of contacting the breeder to give one of them back - basically at the end of my rope. I'd worked with other dog. trainers, but Sue explained and showed how to manage and modify behavior that was easy to comprehend and made sense. I am not exaggerating when I say she has literally changed my life and helped me rethink how to interact with my girls. I am very grateful.

If you're looking for help with your dog's obedience, socialization, manners AND you're also looking to understand your dog better- you're not just looking for any dog trainer, you're looking for Mahogany. She's an expert on leash reactivity and dog/dog and dog/people socialization. She is also the best at motivating dogs using play and rewards so that the training is something you can both look forward to. Mahogany is a trainer that other trainers learn from and train their dogs with! She's got an outstanding ability to see perspectives that other people miss. If you've already tried a couple of trainers and feel ready to give up because you really did what they said and it just isn't working out - call Mahogany. She really is amazing. She can diagnose where you're dog's issues are stemming from and help you get on the right track and stay there. She has the ability to motivate and she's also super on point when it comes to helping you understand and achieve what you need to do to help your dog in the situations where they're really struggling. Whenever I feel like I'm lacking judgment with my dog's behavior, if I'm struggling with a situation that I really want my dog to do well in, she's my go to person and her training always helps!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
