How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs that could be similar to fixing a hole in the wall:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).

However, you should request cost estimates from drywall repair specialists in your area to figure out how much it will cost you to fix your hole.

What tools do you need to repair drywall?

To repair drywall, you need up to several tools and materials. For example, you may need a drill to insert drywall screws and boreholes. A drywall saw or utility knife is perfect for cutting and shaping drywall, and don’t forget your tape measure and pencil. Drywall and taping knives are also essential.

For materials, you’ll likely need construction adhesive, drywall tape, drywall screws, masking tape and joint compound.

If you don’t have these tools — and you don’t want to spend money on them — contact a drywall repair professional instead of doing it yourself.

Do drywall contractors need a license?

Pros may need to obtain a license to fix and install drywall. It’s always worth checking with your local government about whether a drywall company or contractor has to be licensed before they work on your project.

Who do I hire to install or repair drywall?

A general contractor, handyman or a drywall contractor (or company) can usually install and repair drywall. It’s recommended that you call one of these types of pros when your drywall needs to be repaired, such as after a plumber or electrician has completed their work.

Look up local pros online and compare their profiles, paying extra attention to their ratings, reviews, experience and list of services. Contact three to five pros to get cost estimates for your project.

Do drywall contractors do insulation?

A drywall contractor focuses on drywall. If you want to install insulation (or upgrade your existing installation), you should hire an insulation contractor. It's possible that your drywall contractor may be able to offer basic insulation services, but for more advanced insulation installation (such as spray foam), go with a professional who specializes in this.

How do I find a good drywall contractor?

The best way to find a good drywall contractor is by searching for the top-rated contractors near you on Thumbtack. View their ratings, and read their reviews to see how they did on past drywall projects. Drywall repairs to walls and ceiling. They took pride in their work product and seemed to strive for perfection. Somewhat pricey but well worth the fee.

Jeff took care of some drywall repair work in our bathroom ceiling. He was very easy to work with, responsive, good communication and respectful of our space as we work from home these days. Would have selected all five positive discriptors if the app would allow. Will hire again should anymore home repairs arise. Thanks Jeff!

Jamie took out two walls of floor-to-ceiling mirrors the previous owners had installed in a bedroom and repaired the heavily damaged drywall behind it to a nice smooth finish. Also fixed a large hole from a TV mount in the living room, and matched the surrounding skip trowel texture. Straightforward and easy to work with!

I called Douglas Thursday evening for an emergency job for drywall repair due to some water damage the previous evening. He arrived 8am the next morning and finished the project within a day. Essentially replaced the entire ceiling in my master bedroom with painting and texture. I’m very happy with the work Douglas and his team performed!

The good: Matt was quick to provide a quote (which was in-line with other estimates), was extremely responsive, and was able to schedule us fairly quickly. The bad: we had a very difficult time working with the individual actually installing drywall / doing repairs. He walked off the job site several times after conflicts with our painters (we were not there to mediate / observe, but have only had pleasant interactions with the painters), at moments leaving us hanging without knowing when the job would be completed and leaving us scrambling to prepare for potential project delays. He also covered up two rough-in electrical boxes, which resulted in some frantic last-minute digging to uncover before our backsplash went up.

This person claimed to have experience with drywall repair. He has none. He took two hours to attempt to patch a small area around some vent pipes. All of his equipment was brand new suggesting he does not do this sort of stuff normally. He didn’t properly secure the Sheetrock with screws and left the joints completely loose and uneven. He didn’t even think to trim some spray foam before placing the Sheetrock, causing it to bulge out about 1/2”. I was able to reach in and pull the material off the wall since it was just flopping around. He used both fiberglass joint tape AND paper tape with the premix stuff used for patching nail holes and dings. I question if he has any significant experience in construction. While nice enough, he also did not protect any surfaces and left his work messy before I asked him to leave. He left and apologized. I obviously did not pay him and now I have to a) clean up his mess to get to square one and b) do it myself or find someone competent. He wasted both of our time. Please watch some YouTube videos and learn on your own time.
