Dr. Calvin Kiomegne and I worked together as part of Journey to University Mentorship Program (JUMP) , an after-school program for students K-5 in San Francisco, from late fall 2013 to early spring 2014. What impressed me about Dr. Kiomegne was that he was able to work across the age groups equally well, that he was able to break down math concepts to meet a variety of learning styles and language differences, and that he also was able to switch gears and be as much fun with the children as he was an excellent tutor. I have learned that there are not many people with doctorates who will "condescend" to work with little kids, but Dr. Kiomegne was on time and eager to work with all the little ones at JUMP. He was just as adept and engaged in teaching counting to the kindergarteners as he was teaching fractions to the fourth-graders, with the firmness and patience of a loving father. In addition, Dr. Kiomegne had to work with students with varying levels of English proficiency and varying levels of being able to engage with written materials in any language. Some students learn better with visual examples, or through activities. Dr. Kiomegne was equal to the task of varying his examples and study strategies to meet the needs of all the children. Finally, when it was time for recess, Dr. Kiomegne was able to get out on the playground and just enjoy being with the kids as they were kids, playing and enjoying along with them. This endeared him to everyone. In closing, I very much valued Dr. Kiomegne's skills in working with all ages and learning levels at JUMP, and also his ability to enjoy play time with the kids as well. He was a very valuable team member at JUMP, and I wholeheartedly recommend him.

Youlian's lessons are very well organized and planned, and she has an absolutely fantastic ability to explain the nuances and subtleties of day-to-day Mandarin. Every lesson includes listening comprehension, reading comprehension (I'm just using Pinyin for now but she covers Hanzi as well), and conversation practice, and Youlian always provides me with very helpful feedback.

Sun Spanish is an excellent way to learn Spanish. It offers convenient group classes and private lessons. My choice was private lessons. Sun Spanish tailored the classes to fit my needs: conversation, not a blizzard of grammar rules. As a result, and after a relatively short time, I am able to easily carry on a conversation with any native speaker. I am now going back to learn some of the more difficult rules of grammar, but only after already exceeding the conversational level that I had expected. I highly recommend Sun Spanish.

They were a great beginner lesson. Initially the classes lacked a bit of structure but towards the end they were more planned and methodical.

Raffa is an excellent Spanish tutor! He's taught me more in two months than I'd have learned two semesters of university language classes. Highly cost effective! He clearly has a great deal of experience and expertise in structuring curriculum, but he's also flexible and allows me to steer the lessons towards the vocabulary and grammar I am most interested in acquiring. I am also an educator and I have complete respect for his approach and commitment to teaching. I give him my highest recommendation.

I have taken two lessons per week with Keon since June of this year. He has provided me with a detailed lesson plan that covers as much as possible in one hour. I actually wish he gave me more homework and took more of his lessons early on in summer when I was off from school. Before I took his lessons, I have been teaching myself some basic vocabulary and useful words like 고마워 and 실래합니다 through lingodear, but I knew I had to take a step further to ultimately become fluent (or at least be able to have a conversation when I visit Korea for next summer vacation). When I first took his lessons, I remember struggling to recognize what each consonant and vowel sounded like. To my surprise, he started the first lesson with making a sentence rather than focusing on the pronunciation. As he said, pronunciation will come through practice but to be able to have a conversation, I must learn how sentences are structured so I can make sentences myself. If I learn how to do this, then I can simply use the vocabulary that I learn on my own to make a sentence. I like how he clearly explained his reasoning to me so we were on the same page! With each lesson, I learned new pronouns and verbs as well as particles like 은 and 는 and many more. It was so confusing at first getting these particles right when he tested me without looking at examples, but it really helped me out! I also learned possessive forms, where t place adjectives, adverbs, etc., how to ask a question, five different verb tenses like future, present, and past. During the lesson, whenever we came across something interesting about Korean language or culture, then he explained it to me. Right now, I clearly see the progress I made over the last few months as we are having a basic conversation given a hypothetical situation. He’s also assigning me a little more advanced homework now to watch short clips of K-drama with subtitles at .5x speed. I can see myself getting so much better before I go to Korea next summer with my friends! It has been a great journey with you, Keon! Kudos to you!

I took many semesters of German at College of San Mateo with Dr. Raney and she was by far one of the best German professors I've ever had the privilege of knowing. She is patient, brilliant, and very creative in the way in which she teaches a foreign language. She encouraged me and gave up much of her own time to support my desire to improve my language skills. Her dedication and knowledge of German (and I assume in other languages too) is amazing.

Hola!!! I absolutely love Karen. She tutored me for 8 months in Spanish and boy did I relearn a ton. I had taken Spanish for over 10 years but you know what they say when you dont use it you lose it. She was always prepared for our lesson and worked at my pace to ensure I was grasping the language..Our lessons were 60 minutes bi-weekly sessions. Unfortunately I had to move due to a new job but if not I would still be working with Karen!

Yuki is an excellent teacher. I hired Yuki 7 months ago for Japanese lessons and have been studying with her ever since. Not only have I learned more than I expected, I have had fun while doing so. Yuki's ability to answer questions, correct mistakes and push me just enough beyond my comfort zone, all while offering encouragement and instilling confidence, creates an engaging, productive and enjoyable learning environment. In addition to her skill in teaching the language, Yuki shares a wealth of knowledge regarding Japanese culture and current events, regularly weaving this into our lessons. Many aspects of Japanese culture are reflected in how the Japanese language is used. Yuki's ability to blend language learning with cultural insight reinforces my understanding of both and provides a practical and realistic context for my developing language skills. I find this extremely valuable, especially when compared to other language learning experiences that rely primarily on exercises that are contrived and don't reflect how native speakers actually converse. One hallmark of an excellent teacher is their ability to understand and adapt to a student's needs and learning style. Yuki does this extremely well. During our very first lesson, she specifically asked what my motivation and goals are, what experience I've had with the language (if any) and how I like to learn. This was comforting and encouraging, since clearly she wanted to teach me in a way that worked well for me, not simply based on her preferred style of teaching or a "one size fits all" approach. It took me a while to realize that she was continuing to observe and adapt to my learning style months after that first meeting. As an example, I mentioned during a lesson that I was encouraged because I could often understand much of what Yuki would say in Japanese. She responded that she had purposely been speaking at full speed, as native speakers do, because she felt that I had progressed to the point where that was just enough of a challenge to help me learn without being too difficult to be discouraging. I can't remember how we had progressed to that point, but Yuki was clearly keeping track of my progress, where I was getting comfortable and where I was still challenged, and had adapted our lessons over time to what I needed at that moment. I highly recommend Yuki as a language teacher. She cares about her students and applies all of her knowledge and teaching skill toward helping them reach their individual goals. She creates a very supportive and comfortable environment, which is invaluable when learning a language. Her ability to integrate cultural insight and current events adds a depth to her language lessons that is not easy to find and makes her lessons more relevant, practical and engaging. Perhaps most telling of all, I have learned more than I expected and I have had a lot of fun doing it.

Ms. Zepeda has been tutoring my homeschooled 4th grade son in Spanish. He is very bright but new to the language, and really needed a sharp, encouraging, supportive instructor to help him along. Raquel has been such a wonderful blessing. Warm, patient, intelligent, dependable, and professional--she's been fantastic for our child. He is learning a lot and is excited about the process, due in no small amount to her fun and savvy guidance. He really looks forward to lessons with her! I would highly recommend you see if she is a match for your family, as well.

In the beginning, I was really afraid of talking to others in English because I know that I can’t speak English well. However, after some lessons, I become more and more confident and fell in love with the lessons. I tried speaking to others and they answered me. This greatly encouraged me.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
