We had a complete landscape overhaul project which we submitted on Thumbtack and received a prompt, courteous response from AA Cardenas. We had high-level plans for what we envisioned but also wanted to gain input from a professional opinion. During our initial meetings with Arisel Ortega (owner), he provided ideas and examples from other comparable projects that solidified he was the right person for the job. The estimates provided were comprehensive and reasonable. Arisel and his crew are extremely hard-working, and set realistic timescales for various stages of the project through completion. The attention to detail and overall quality of workmanship is high. We could not be more pleased with the end result. I highly recommend Arisel (AA Cardenas) for any landscaping need.

Thank you so much for your recommendation. D'Franco Landscape and Irrigation Services was a great referral. Valentin, the owner, was dedicated to making sure that we were happy with his work. We liked his work so much that we asked him to install an drip system in front of the house and to pick out the appropriate the plants for our area and we are very happy with the results. I highly recommend him.

Turn around time was prompt, all communication was timely and professional, no-mow sod installation was beautifully done. The project had stone borders on 3 sides and CRC cleaned up the underlying growth, and carefully reinstalled the stones flush with the new sod. We highly recommend their work.

We hired Walter for biweekly maintenance of our front yard. He also gave us competitive estimates for artificial turf installation, as well as removal of a crooked/unsafe tree in the backyard.

I hired Gustavo for 1000-sq feet landscape project. I had him install paver stones, mulch, and clean out the remaining sections of the yard. Gustavo responded to my emails promptly and was able to come out right away to give me a very competitively priced estimate. Gustavo and his crew was very reliable and began work almost immediately. The work took about 2-weeks but his crew made sure to clean up after themselves at the end of each work day. Overall, I am very impressed with his professionalism and work product. Most of all, I am grateful for the little details that I see that he put into the work where some others would have simply skipped. His work is textbook perfect. Thank you Gustavo and I will most definitely hire you again very soon!

Milko went out of the way to make sure I chose the correct product, going to an electronics store and emailing me the correct SKU numbers, etc. and he completed the installation of 17 ceiling lights in one day; he worked a long day!

We recently purchased a home and the previous owners had deferred maintenance on much of the landscaping. Miguel was very responsive. He and his sons did an outstanding job trimming trees and hedges, shaping bushes, and pulling weeds. We look forward to working with him again in the future.

Shortly after posting my project on Thumbtack, Sam responded. The following morning he promptly showed up for our appointment to review the project. Sam gave me a reasonable quote for the project (removing pavers, digging out tree roots, and re-setting the pavers). The following morning Sam and his crew showed up ON TIME to start the project. His crew was very professional and they did exactly what Sam had promised, plus a little more! They completed the project earlier than I had anticipated, cleaned up the job site, and even asked if I wanted to keep the leftover materials, which I did! I will definitely use Sam for future projects - he did quality work, on time, at a fair price!

We needed a landscaper to install a small lawn in our backyard. Rubin and his team were great - Rubin had great suggestions to improve the look of the backyard, was always on time, very good at providing updates on plans and progress, and the resulting lawn looks great. We would definitely use Limon Landscape again for future landscaping needs.

Machado Landscaping just completed transforming our front yard from a lawn that wasted water to a yard that is now totally drip watered , no lawn and many drought resistant plants .Paul and Donald removed the sod , changed the current water system to drip and covered the area with wood chips.Paul is very knowledgable and has a positive , friendly attitude.I received five quotes for the job , and I chose Paul because made suggestions about the job that went a long way towards its success. He completed the job in a timely manner and I would not hesitate to hire Paul if I needed more landscaping done .I highly recommend Machado Landscaping !

We hired Bin and his brother to repair our wood fence that had been damaged when a tree fell. They came to give me an estimate in person and listened well to my concerns. After talking it through, they came up with a great solution to patch the fence instead of a costly replacement. They were even able to source weathered wood that made the repair invisible to notice. If you have a tricky landscape project and want tailored service, call Bin at Quick Lawn Care.

Our remodeling was done remotely, and yet we were thrilled with the end result. Lifetime Remodeling provided us with the highest quality of work and costumer service. Lifetime remodeling brought their structural engineer, completed blue prints, got the plans approved with the city, and orchestrated all the professionals. The work included taking down walls, electrical work, building a pantry and a walk-in closet, repositioning a supporting beam, enlarging windows, creating a bar, painting walls and cabinets, changing bathroom floors, installing kitchen backsplash, hardwood flooring installation and refinishing, and more. Shmuel and the team were very receptive to all our requests and easy to communicate with. The job was completed within the planned budget and time frame. They truly care about doing the best for their clients, and it shows. Highly recommended.

Great beautiful work performed at very competitive price by Jose and his team. Trees pruned, large palm trees transplanted, very large maple tree planted, tons of landscape installation work - all done as requested. Showed up right on time each day and cleaned up with care. Very friendly, pleasant, hard-working team. Would hire again in a second!

Agustin Beas completed an awesome job on my front and back yard. He is very flexible and open. My estimate for the mulch quantity was not exactly right, but he was willing to make additional trip to the landscape supply place. His work is very detail oriented and the finish was flawless. I will definitely use him for future pruning and any additional garden work. Thanks.

Shirin did a landscape project next door to me and had added several levels of stone retaining walls and finished it off with a smart design of plants. I became a fan and asked her to install a drip system in my own yard. Very pleased with her service and I think you will be too.

It was great working with Edward. The work he and his crew did exceeded expectations. The deck and turf installation were done very well. There were a couple delays, from suppliers, but Edward kept us informed and put in extra hours to get the job done. He offered great value and was easy to work with. We will definitely call Edward for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
