"What a healer! Walked in hunched over and walked out standing straight with a big smile, greater mobility, breathing and moving again! What a little miracle worker! Dessi brings a heartfelt and sincere approach to her practice. She is patient and very professional taking the time to learn what ails you, and practices what she preaches. She will treat you thoroughly until SHE is satisfied and you are no longer in pain before she decides to let you go, I can say after years of deep tissue, thai, chiro, etc. this was by far one of the more positive results I've experienced in body work! Highly recommended! Great value! Gracious service and support! See you again very soon ;-) Scott "

"I love how Nate is so knowledgeable and always learning new techniques. I usually can only handle swedish massage because I have very low pain tolerance lol. But when I went in to see Nate I had so many knots around the back of my neck and so Nate proceeded to work them out. He was perfectly firm yet gentle and when it hurt too bad he immediately backed off. However after seeing him a few times I appreciate the firmness now and feel super relaxed and de-stressed after every visit. I know that allowing him to dig deep to do his thing, I'll come out feeling amazing for so much longer than just a swedish massage. Thanks Nate!"

"I'm an athlete who has to work a lot and Bridget keeps me going. I've had neck and shoulder aches from sitting at my desk all day then running straight to the gym to lift or go train jiu jitsu. My traps, neck, and upper back always feel tight and knotted. Bridget does great massage on these areas that relieves that tension and makes me feel limber again. She's fantastic! "

"I've got massages from Jessica since December 2017. I keep having low-back problems from time to time as I'm sitting all day at work and my hamstrings become too tight. She carefully listens to my requests and develops unique plans combining various massage techniques, moves, and stretches. She resolves the problem areas with smooth, uniform pressure, and also helps me become deeply relaxed. She works very efficiently and with great precision, and usually leaves me with some great tips on posture. She thoroughly understands the human body and never hesitates to explain the cause of my problems with the scientific names of muscles, ligaments, and bones. Jessica is extremely professional and takes great care to make me feel comfortable throughout the session. She has a calm, kind, intuitive, and scientific nature and it is such a wonderful experience to get a massage from her."

"Alex provided an awesome massage. I needed some work on my neck and back muscles, and Alex was able to schedule me for the next morning. At the start of the session, he asked me some general questions and provided water. He provided a mix of deep pressure and stretching. He also coached me on how to breathe during the massage. At the end of the session, he provided some posture exercises (yoga poses) to help me with those problem areas. I'm looking forward to seeing him soon. I felt better after the massage, and was relaxed enough for a long nap. Thanks Alex."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
