When you decide to book them the contract has a clause that you must tip 20%. It's mandatory. We would have tipped anyway but I just didn't like that it was in the contract. Also if you pay by credit card it's an additional 5% fee. The team arrived 10-15 minutes early and got started right away. They start by having you sign a maximum amount that the price should not exceed. We moved from a tri level 2 bdrm 2.5 bath in SSF to 2 story home in San Jose. I am pregnant so I couldn't finish packing but they offered packing services also which we took advantage of. You just have to pay for the hourly rate, of course. They also provided wardrobe boxes, wrap your furniture for you, disassemble and reassemble your furniture, which was a huge plus. They were making good time until they thought they finished loading the truck. We still had a quarter of the kitchen we wanted them to pack and move for us. They ran out of boxes due to a miscommunication between myself and the owner. So we decided to pause for lunch and they went to get more boxes. We offered to go to Home Depot close by but I guess it's in their policy that they need to provide their own boxes (unless you had them already). They didn't charge us for the lunch time. The guys are a good team. I would definitely refer them but you just need to be clear in what you need/want from them. I could have been more prepared and clearly communicate with the owner. We didn't mind paying the additional time. As long as we did the move at one time, that was all we cared about and they were able to get the job done after some negotiation.

Working with Two Friends Movers was incredible! They showed up on time and immediately started getting to work packing everything efficiently and meticulously. We hadn't finished putting everything in boxes yet but they helped us pack and brought the right equipment and extra tape and boxes. They unpacked everything at our new place carefully without damaging a single item. Payment was super easy (they accept credit cards for an extra 4%). From start to finish, it only took 4 hours to move our entire apartment. And they did this in the rain! I highly recommend working with these guys!

I hired Albion Moving and Storage for my move on my first home. They came on time (early even!) and was very responsive with any questions or concerns I had. I was stressed with working and packing, but their 2 man crew moved everything I needed so quickly. I have extremely narrow stairs in my new home and they did not make a scratch on it. I'm very impressed with their efficiency and quality of work. Definitely would recommend to anyone and will reach out to them in any future moves!

We had a lot of stuff to move and we were like deer in the headlights. Scott came over to give us an estimate and also gave us a lot of tips and guidance on how to get going. A Pro Tip from Scott; plan early and call him early! We did a lot of packing ourselves, but Scott can also provide packers to make your job easier! (I wish I knew this earlier, it would have saved my back!) On the day of the move, Thomas and Shane showed up on time and began to move us. Those guys were the most professional and friendly people you would ever want to work with. They made the whole tedious task a lot easier for us to deal with. When they got to our storage place, they carefully arranged our stuff to maximize the space. Scott said he was trying to see if we could avoid getting another storage space (we had a LOT of stuff!) I enthusiastically recommend Scott and his moving/packing services. I look forward to using him and his crew to move from storage to our new home.

Jeff and Jesus (Dan was not available) were simply fantastic. Very friendly and exactly what we needed. They showed up on time and unloaded our Relo packing cube, bringing everything into our new apartment. They were professional (came prepared with their own tools), and handled our items with great care. They even helped put together a few of our tables which was a big time and stress reliever. Would definitely work with them again!

Michael was very prompt and thorough in describing his services and he kept his word. I needed help packing up my stuff for a move while I was unexpectedly out of town. He put my mind at ease by packing everything up in a very organized and helpful manner. He listened to what I asked for but also operated independently. This put my mind at ease and took a huge weight off my shoulders. Definitely recommend!

overall lots of care to packing our large art and piano. One thing that was a bit disconcerting - a very expensive and brand new Briggs and Riley suitcase was packed by them and somehow never made it out of the box. Also, pack your own wardrobe boxes. They stuff a whole bunch of other things in with the clothes and about 1/2 of my professional and dry cleanables were totally smashed and wrinkled and I had to have them re-pressed and cleaned. Also, a brand new blouse had it's sleeve sticking out of the wardrobe box and was snagged, thus ruined. And the tag was still on it! Also, make sure that you get an accurate bid from them. They grossly under-bid our job and were over halfway through the packing procedure before they let us know they needed another truck. This made the total bid go up by at least 1/3 of the total. What were we going to do? Say, "never mind! unload the truck?" Not likely. The other thing is that one of their moving trucks left a huge oil stain on our brand new driveway. It wasn't the fault of the truck, but an operator error. Phone service was great, but when we talked to them about compensation for the driveway, the shirt and the suitcase, they said to file a claim. I hope they honor it, but when we talked with them about the suitcase, the first few phone calls, they remembered it, but by the 4th or 5th call, they denied ever having seen it, even though I was specific about that suitcase during packing because I had intended to use it for a business trip a couple of weeks after the move. I wish I would have moved it myself. I do have a picture of the suitcase in context of the other items that needed to be packed, but it then becomes a case of "he said she said." We shall see. Claim will be submitted. If they make it right, I will give them 5 stars.

Madison Kane really came through for me. I had a friend on Medi-Cal who needed to move to a memory care facility. We needed to close her apartment in two weeks. Madison arranged sales of furniture and what not that paid for half the cost of the move. She sensitively saved the items of most emotional significance to my friend – photos, letters, momentous. The items of minor value we were able to give to charity. Madison identified key items to save, if we need to sell in the future, for my friends care. She did a full appraisal of all items and managed the online postings, sales, packing, and hauling. She got us the best price for key items and conducted several sales in a very short time. All hauling was done by Hauling Mike who brought the remaining items to several local charities in two runs. I was quite impressed. They worked incredibly hard. I didn’t really believe we could do this in two weeks! She and Mike where delightful to work with. Their sensitivity to my client was touching.

Amber arrived on time and brought all the supplies (we had just moved out and left nothing in our old apartment). She was thorough, estimated the time needed well, and we got our full deposit back. More than that, her personality was awesome, full of smiles and really pleasant, seemed happy to chase down my dust bunnies. If we hadn't moved out of the city, I would have contracted with her on a regular basis.

They were very punctual and quick in packing up several large items (china hutch, curio cabinet, recliners, etc.) we had moved to Tracy. Had several items with glass and nothing was broken or compromised! I would definitely use them again! They also hauled off two items to the dumps. Very convenient, the two services they offer!

This guy was definitely on top of it, definitely knows the ins and outs of moving and packing. Even corrected some things that I overlooked to keep my stuff safe and intact. Wife and kids even got a kick out of him and enjoyed his company at the same time. He's obviously a family guy. They say moving happens in threes and I've already recommended two other people to Robert. This guy has worth ethic and common courtesy in which you don't see in people anymore. Robert definitely deserves the work if you're looking for his services! 100 percent money well spent!

Alex and company are amazing! We were being strung along by our big-name moving company, and needed to be in Missouri to start a new job. After yet another delay, and yet another "guarantee", we were desperate and found AmerApex Moving. Alex contacted us on a Monday and by Thursday, they were there! They were absolute lifesavers, and did everything they could to take care of our belongings and make us feel at ease. And then they were in Missouri by Saturday to unload everything in our new house! On top of that, they are incredibly friendly and made a stressful situation feel much lighter. We can't thank Alex enough, and wish every moving company out there could be half as professional and effective as his!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

Two guys came with a smile on their faces to move my heavy furniture between apartments within SF on memorial day day no less!. When they arrived (perfectly on time) and saw my stuff and the narrow stair way they recommended 3 people but weren't able to get a third person. Still, though, they continued with the job and handled everything expertly. From wrapping, loading into their large truck, disassembly, all the way to the unloading and unwrapping and placing the furniture they got it all done with pretty much no fuss. They even helped assemble furniture they didn't move. The only critique I had was that my previous movers were able to get my old move done in 4-5 hours with the similar stuff and these guys (who were working tirelessly) took closer to 8. I didn't realize how much time was passing and this caught me by surprise since I felt they were working at a reasonable pace. Thus the price ended up being higher than anticipated which I was a bit bummed about. That said, this is a reliable and caring crew so I can recommend them!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
