Sergey was great! I hired him to help with a few fixes in our new condo, including mounting a TV, fixing bathroom cabinet doors, installing an under-cabinet garbage pull-out and a few other small fixes. Sergey was super professional, arrived on time, and fixed everything pretty quickly! It was a pleasure and I'll definitely hire him again in the future for fixes in the use.

I picked Jose due to all of his positive reviews. I reached out and he got right back to me and gave me his window of availability. He communicated with me throughout the day so our timing was in alignment. He did a fantastic job installing our new bathroom vanity. We are now using him for another Plumbing project.

I needed to have a new water line installed to my refrigerator and Ronaldo was not only quick to respond but he was very flexible with scheduling a date. He was able to install the refrigerator plumbing in 30 minutes and was helpful in answering any questions I had throughout the whole process. I look forward to working with Ronaldo again on any future plumbing needs that may come up.

We hired Byron to replace our front door -install door and frame, new locks, peephole, plus painting. We also asked him to do an additional lock for our back door. He did a great job - love our new door! He also offered to pick up additional items from Home Depot for us (primer, etc). Very responsive. Would work with him again.

Max did an amazing job for us. We had been having issues with our hot water and have had other people work on it without success. Max arrived in time and was able to trouble shoot the problem quickly. We now have stable hot water in all our showers and from some of the faucets where we were never able to get hot water before! Can’t emphasize enough how happy we are!

I hired Mate to assemble two pieces of furniture and to change a shower head. He arrived on time with his own set of tools, worked quickly and carefully, cleaned up the area he had been working on, and carried all the empty boxes to the recycle bin. He was very friendly and I will certainly hire him again.

I recently hired Jasper for a kitchen cabinet job that involved installing new hardware and hinges on all of my kitchen cabinet doors (as well as some touch-up work on the doors, themselves) and then installing/hanging them. He also installed a new surface for the under-sink cabinet. I would definitely hire Jasper again. Top notch, quality work, reasonable rates and he's a super nice guy on top of that. Definitely recommend.

This is a company, not an independent plumber. I wish there was a way to distinguish between the two. One of the company's schedulers told me the wrong time on the phone, saying someone would be out at 9am the following day, and not mentioning a 2-hour window. I had rearranged my work schedule to be there for the appointment. I called at about 9:15 to see where they were, at which point they told me that the plumber would be there between 10:00-12:00. Luckily, they were able to send a different plumber out, so it ended up being about 1.5 hours later than I had planned. I think maybe the plumber they sent was a bit new; when doing the estimate to replace a broken tub faucet, he had to call someone else to come over. When they give you an estimate, they are supposed to stick to that price, even if they end up spending more time. The guy ended up spending probably a LOT more time than he'd planned, because the two recommended we replace the entire shower set, not just the faucet. But they did not give me a new or different estimate for that work (their mistake!). When we got the bill at the end of the day, it was more than double the estimate. We ended up compromising, because even though it was his mistake in estimating, he did spend the whole day, and was very nice. The plumber did a good job with the actual repair, and left the place clean when he left. Three stars on the scheduling and estimating, five on the work itself; average of four. I would hire this company again.

I hired Stephen to add a gas valve for a dryer install. Stephen was exceptionally responsive (answering my questions ahead of the appointment & keeping me updated on his ETA) and once on the job he was a real professional. I had just moved into a new house and needed a few other things looked at and he was very accommodating and fair on price. I'd highly recommend Stephen!

Work performed was for installation of bathroom exhaust vent and OTR microwave with exhaust vent. Written estimate was provided days prior and all necessary installation materials were purchased by him as agreed. Mess was kept at minimum by covering immediate work areas but I still had a lot of cleaning afterwards due to the spread of sawdust (windows were left open). Contractor and his helper completed the job in the time promised. Unfortunately, the microwave vent did not function as needed (not venting air to outside as expected). Contractor was notified and he returned in the same week to rework the vent. He was apologetic and showed good effort in diagnosing and fixing the problem though a little guesswork had to be done by both of us since we didn't have the installation manual. The outcome for both vents was acceptable though my perfectionism says otherwise. LOL. Overall, he was polite and showed professionalism throughout the entire process. He was patient and timely in responding to all our concerns. He was able to acquiesce to our preference in materials/appliances and allowed us options regarding the installation. We felt like he valued our input and we had control over the process especially since this was our first time dealing with a general contractor.

C&D tile saved our lives!!! I cannot write enough good things about this company and workers. The job was done efficiently, at a very fair prices, with no impact to our lives. The job was a small bathroom tile job in a tenant unit. C&D had to remove the floor vanity and toilet to complete 3 day however every night the bathroom was in working order so that my tenants did not have to move out. The work was high quality and the floor and all details look amazing. I would not hesitate to hire C& D again.

Regina and Jason did a great job installing tile and a new shower enclosure in our lower bath. It looks great. We had work being done in the back yard at the same time, and they were very flexible working with the landscape contractors. And their prices are very reasonable.

So here were my tasks for Ivan. Clean dryer vent, fix door that was scrapping against the step, tighten kitchen tap, fix leaking toilet, and shore up part of a fence that was damaged during the winter. All this was done quickly and efficiently. My new task is to develop another list so that Ivan can come back!! NK

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
