Mayra was incredibly professional, efficient, and very talented. My mom and I both got lighter looks, and they came out great and went very well with our dress colors. I would 100% work with her again.

Chantelle provided wedding makeup for me, 5 bridesmaids, and my mother. She did an amazing job making everyone look absolutely gorgeous and yet still natural and like themselves. My makeup stayed beautiful all night long -- after 12 hours, when I got home at the end of the night, it still looked incredible! She's also great fun to be around: chatty, funny, sweet, and just a beacon of light. She's exactly the kind of person you want around on your wedding day (or any day) to help you laugh and stay calm. I would hire her again in a heartbeat, have already recommended her to one friend, and will continue to recommend her to anyone in need of a makeup artist!

Finding a stylist for my wedding was probably the most surprisingly difficult part of the planning process. We wanted someone to come to our home, but we also couldn't afford to pay wedding premium prices. Most of the stylists I contacted charged over double for the bride's hair and makeup styling, but thankfully Teresa does not! She and her assistant did a fantastic job on everyone's hair and make-up- from Grandma to the bridesmaids. She asked for pictures for everyone's desired hair-dos, and everyone was pleased with her work. I have a seriously crazy amount of hair, and Teresa pulled it into a gorgeous french twist that didn't budge all night. She was very receptive to feedback, and was very reliable, calm, and easy to work with. Thanks Teresa!

I arranged makeup / hair session with Anne for my in-laws for my wedding day. Anne kindly found a hair stylist for them as well. They were on time to meet them, and my in laws were very happy with them. Nonetheless to say, they showed up to my wedding, confident and comfortable. We are thankful for Anne's accommodating attitude and team work.

I hired for hair during my wedding & my bridesmaids were very satisfied with the way their hair turned out. I was so happy that the stylist arrived on time & they were ready to work. They were very sweet. The only issue was that after they were finished they asked for a 15% gratuity per person after I had already signed a contract stating that the service was paid in full & that the company was to distribute money to the stylists. According to the contract everything was included AND it stated in the contract that I was not to give the stylist money. It was awkward to have the stylist upset with me & demanding money. I asked her to call her company b/c I had already paid in full according to the contract for their gas, time, & styling. It was resolved but it was awkward! I'm still very happy with the final product :)

Liv is the best stylist a bride could hope for! My stylist cancelled the week before my wedding and Liv stepped in to save the day. I was running late and in a rush for hair+make up but Liv was ready to go with her suitcase full of tricks! We were instant besties and we had a great time laughing and chatting while she transformed me into a beautiful bride. My family even said I looked like a model. She's a true pro!

After my latest hair transformation with having fall colors and all the colors faded away, it was time for a change. I told Yvonne that I wanted blue, but instead, why not Stitch themed hair? This is by far, my FAVORITE hair color that I have ever had yet. I wasn't expecting much since Stitch was mostly blue with black facial features and pink ears, so I couldn't imagine what she could do with these colors besides dyed my whole head blue and put pink highlights, but NO! She added dimension to my hair and added the pink highlights to make it look like Stitch's ears was on the sides of my head. I was AMAZED by how she pictured Stitch's colors and transferred it to my head, BUT we weren't finished yet. It was time for the haircut. I am always pleased with whatever haircut Yvonne gave me along with any other hairstylists gave me, but I always requested my bangs to not be cut short. I had short blunt bangs before when I was younger, but was never a fan of it because I didn't like the feeling of my hair touching my face. Somehow, Yvonne cut my hair so that it was short enough to my liking and so that I could still split it down the middle or side part to my pleasure. Thank you Yvonne for this amazing hair transformation.

What can I say about Susan? Only that she is the best I have come across for hair extensions! I've been going to her for years now. She is professional and meticulous at her craft. My hair is growing now and not damaged anymore like it used to be from going to other stylists.

She did my makeup for a dance at my high school and I was AMAZED by the results. I was getting compliments all night. She texted me directly and helped me to decide what I wanted to do. She's even able to take pictures that you send and change them enough to be unique. If you are looking for a very talented, organized, and friendly makeup artist or hair stylist for any event, Cynthia is the person to go to!

April is an amazingly talented stylist. I have hard hair to tame, very frizzy and curly and full, and she knows exactly what to do to make it look great every time! She takes her time and makes sure it is perfect. I appreciate the patience and passion she has in her work. She is not just a stylist but an artist. You know she loves her work and it shows. Would recommend her to anyone, with any type of hair or style they are looking for.

Shelley Golden is not only talented as a stylist but a delight too! On our shopping outing, her eye for colors and putting together outfits was spot on! Her suggestions gave me a fresh perspective from other stylists I've worked with in the past. Shelley brings in her unique experiences with textiles, her varied background as a stylist and world traveler living abroad. I highly recommend Shelley for any woman or man who's wanting to be seen in an updated way from the same old, same old.

Working with Nicole was a dream. I would highly recommend her as a personal stylist and plan to work with her again soon. // A bit of backstory: I'm a 5'7" slender (size 2) woman in San Francisco in her late 20s. And shopping stresses me out - too many choices, not enough guidance, and I don't want to spend the time reading through Cosmopolitan, Elle etc to figure out what style works and what doesn't. Because of the above, I've worked with a personal stylist before when I lived in New York. I walked away with many nice and expensive 'classic' pieces from Bloomingdale's, none of which really fit my style and none of which I wear today. I look at that experience as a waste. I felt very nervous trying this again, but knew I needed to give it a go. My goal was to finally nail a capsule wardrobe so that I wouldn't have to think about each individual piece anymore -- without spending hours of my life on research -- so that I could just feel comfortable and confident in my look. // Working with Nicole Nicole is very down-to-earth and very approachable. In our first phone call, she asked about my goals, my body type, my favorite stores and more. She then put together a Pinterest board and sent it over to me. And here is the PERFECT example of why I'm SO glad I worked with a personal stylist in the first place... Because I looked at the Pinterest board and thought, "Oh, how dull... these pieces are so basic and too loose to accentuate my figure." But then my boyfriend (a visual designer) took a look and said, "Actually, the length of this top would accentuate your torso," and "The cropped length of these pants would make you look taller," and "The draped look makes you appear slimmer than a tight one" and so on and so forth, enlightening me to all the fundamental principles of style that Nicole had subtly understood and applied to fit my body, that I never would have picked out for myself. With that I was sold. // Once in the Mall I love the styles in Aritzia, but the last time I went to their two story store I spent three hours but walked out empty-handed and deeply frustrated. Nothing I had picked out actually worked on my body, and I felt at once helpless and somewhat pathetic at spending all that time, trying on all those pieces, and not being able to land at something that worked for my look. With Nicole, I tried Aritzia again. She had pulled out several pieces all waiting for me when I walked in -- and they all fit like a glove and were exactly what I was looking for: chic, comfortable, casual, yet polished and with a touch of class. I was so excited at finally having found the pieces that could be a base for my wardrobe that I insisted on going through the store again together, in case we had missed something that might work just as well; and found nothing. She had picked out exactly what worked for my body type, exactly what worked for my style, and I wish I had trusted her eye and thoroughness from the beginning! // In Sum If you're looking to nail your wardrobe once and for all, and not have to spend hours stressing about it, buying pieces that you ultimately return, and just love what you wear without thinking about it, then work with Nicole. Just do it. You won't regret it and you'll have hours of your life back and compliments (and confidence) galore. Thank you, Nicole, and look forward to working together again soon.

Jaiya did both my hair and make-up for my wedding in November 2014 and she was AMAZING. We already had booked her for make-up for me and my bridesmaids, but she also stepped in at the last minute to do my hair when an issue came up with my original appointment. It was perfect. Beyond the gorgeous hair and make-up, she was a soothing, magical presence in an otherwise crazy, stressful room of pre-wedding women. I can't recommend her highly enough.

My time is limited and spending hours scouring stores for “that dress” seemed a daunting and distasteful task. Jessica was not only helpful in identifying my style but was able to locate the perfect gown plus accessories that reflected my taste. It was perfect. Working with someone of Ms. Barr’s caliber is exactly what one wants in a professional stylist. I highly recommend her service, you will be delighted.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.
