FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I studied English Literature in college and eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/writing from the University of California at Berkeley. I also always had an interest in software and technology. I paired these skills and interests to become a technical writer. The more I learned about software, the more I began to learn and understand coding and HTML. As the internet began to emerge, I began developing websites for personal use, various small businesses and other contract work. I've always kept up with changing internet trends, so have also worked with blogging, developing other on-line content, and social media management. Over the past 5 to 7 years I've learned how to use and customize WordPress sites, and in the past 2 years I have grown into working on mobile applications and websites optimized for mobile devices. I continue to grow and add to my skills as technology changes and more platforms become increasingly popular. I enjoy lending my expertise to anyone who needs help to publish printed or online content. I also provide consulting to demystify the internet by providing tips and resources for small business owners who want to grow their business online.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
On my website, I provide advice for hiring a technical writer. This advice can apply to hiring other people in similar fields. You should ask for samples and give a writing test if possible. Most importantly, you should have a very clear vision of what you want and your expectations. Get specific about the types of tools and software you will want your writer/editor to use. Will they be asked to work with graphics or screen shots? Will they have real subject matter experts to work with, or will they only develop content from design documents or requirements? Make sure your job requirements and qualifications are very clear before you post the position.
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Both of my parents owned their own successful businesses when I was growing up. As a result, I had very early exposure to developing a strong work ethic. I know what it means to provide exceptional customer service, quality of service, and to follow-up, follow through, and deliver. This is the only way to keep customers happy and to keep their business. I apply these same principals to my freelance work and typically deliver beyond what is expected.
