Jose was very responsive. I appreciated that he noticed my current disposal did not need to be replaced, as I originally thought. He notified me right away and walked me through the repairs he did need to make. He was very transparent with his availability and pricing and the tenant was happy with his work as well. I will definitely reach out to him if I have any other plumbing issues in the future.

My first Thumbtack experience, and it was a great one - The job involved replacing the original toilet from 1960 (seriously) that suddenly cracked its tank. Ronnie, the guy behind Bright Ideas Plumbing, showed up on time and ready to work - he completed the removal / install in about 30 mins, left absolutely no mess, and was super pleasant and nice. 5 stars to this plumbing company!

Oscar did a great job on our plumbing project. He worked on the weekends for our schedule and redid anything that the inspector wanted redone. He replumbed our whole house due and was also able to redo the main line from the house to the street which involved removing a tree stump. Oscar was far cheaper than other bids and we past our final inspections.

We had Bogdan do a bathroom renovation in our old house, which was full of little unplanned difficulties. He worked long hours, putting in lots of extra touches to make things pull together. He was always noticing details we never would have and thinking ahead to create the best options. He is a kind person and very professional. He clearly cares about his work. He also had a good network of folks to help out when he needed it. The job took longer and was more complicated than I expected and when I tally all the hours of work he put in, it was a very fair price. It is rare to find someone who cares about doing an excellent job even beyond what the customer expects. Bogdan is your man.

The job here was to remove a cast iron bathtub and replace the tub with an acrylic model. I honestly (I watched the whole time, being the typical nervous homeowner) cannot believe the quality and level of professionalism they bought to the job. Of course with a house of my age (50 years) there always will be unknowns in the job, especially when plumbing is involved. But they handled it great. They also discovered an issue with the drain and fixed that also. I really don't want the drywall to go back up, because the new plumbing work looks so great and will be hidden. Oh well. Anyway, they did a great job and I would highly recommend them. I will easily rehire them for another job.

A better plumbing company has been extremely helpful, thorough and dedicated to finishing a project at my grandmother's house. My grandmother's house is over 65 years old and had an array of plumbing problems that surfaced day after day as the guys were working. But they were committed to fixing it until everything ran properly. We were definitely blessed to find this company.

The best experience I have EVER had with a plumbing company and one of my top 10 customer experiences overall. These guys are responsive, flexible and will go out of their way to help you get the project done right. Stan was the one who did our install and he was a pleasure to work with - knowledgable, friendly and just a fun guy. Javier and James are also wonderful. I'd recommend these guys to anyone - they'll get your job done right even if it's tricky.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
