Excellent service. I had to replace my water heater and got multiple quotes from plumbing companies who made it seem so difficult. Jose replied to my request right away and within 30 minutes he was already at my house ready to start work. He picked up the water heater and didn't mind to finish work the same evening even though it was already late. He did an excellent job replacing the water heater and even checked with me the next morning to see if everything works fine. I will definitely work with Jose again Keep up the good work!

I am a first time user of Thumbtack, and was so pleased to have a response to my request within minutes. After talking on the phone with Ronaldo to discuss the job, I hired him to replace a water heater at my parents' home. Once he got to their home, he determined that the water heater I had chosen would not have worked in their space, but I got great advice from this expert, who recommended one that would work in the space and with their particular needs. My elderly parents were very happy with him and his work. He maintained contact with me through out the job by text,, allowing me to feel confident that everything was going well with the water heater and my parents. The job was done efficiently and professionally. I will definitely use Thumbtack again, and recommend both Thumbtack and Ronaldo.

Oscar was quick, responsive, professional and honest for my water heater repair. He came in after hours to review the situation and completed the work the next day. He went above and beyond to make sure the repairs were up to a high professional standard and did not cut any corners while staying at his quoted price. Highly recommended.

Gleo was really wonderful in helping fix our our water heater which stopped working on New Year's eve. Gleo reached out to me via Thumbtack. We exchanged a few messages and he asked for photos of the boiler and the switch module. After reviewing the photos, he mentioned one possible root cause and submitted a quote for that. I accepted the quote and he came over very promptly the next day morning as promised and helped resolve the problem. I liked the way he worked through different possible problems very methodically and all the while he explained me what he was looking for before he started poking around. He not only found and fixed the boiler problem but waited to make sure that the problem was verified and hot water was flowing at all taps. He also promised to stand by his work for the next few days in case the problem came back. Overall, the problem was resolved successfully and the experience of working with Gleo was very good. Thanks very much Gleo. You helped us out when even the warranty company could not. Kudos!

Routine water heater swap - yeah right. What started out as thinking our water heater was broken, turned out to be a long overdue clogged sewer lateral. Worst case scenario. While I'm not that happy about the sewage overflow situation which could have been better mitigated (and we still need to beach the hell out of that room), the solutions and options offered by Ali were professional and spoke of his experience. To unclog the piping, snaking was attempted but failed, hydrojetting was attempted but failed (with a mess of sewage). Finally we got a camera down there to find a wall of something about 50 feet down from the mechanical room to a spot under the sidewalk. Digging 4 feet down, to find actually a pretty good condition clay lateral. Ali's man Valentino (a skilled gentleman), cut the clay and replaced it with a riser in order to install a cleanout for future maintenance. Once done, they hydrojetted for another hour to clear 7-8 months worth of waste. The camera was once again sent through to find that a portion of the clay lateral had shifted and created uneven surfaces including some penetration of tree roots. While most plumbers would probably recommending an immediate replacement, Ali recommended that since it wasn't fully collapsed, we should simply clear out the lateral as routine maintenance rather than spend all the money to replace the pipe. I appreciate his direct communication, no sales pitch, and brief coaching through the process. While I do have 10 yrs of construction experience, and his price was not the cheapest, he certainly delivered on time and without any sense of price gouging.

Greg came out to replace my hot water heater and to install a new sewage ejector pump lid at a perfectly reasonable price. He did a great job considering the many difficulties with installing the new lid.

After talking to other plumbers about repairing our kitchen pipes I had a good feeling when Ganzo came to our house to check out the job. He went into the attic at least twice to measure and survey the situation, the other guys didn't even get on the ladder to look. He was very methodical and took his time figuring out exactly what was needed. Ganzo and his son came on time with all the material and tools necessary. After the piping was completed we found that the facet was also bad. They went out of the scope of the job and installed a new facet too. We had a great experience, on time and on budget. Next time my neighbors or friends ask if I know a Plumber I will say absolutely.

We had an emergency on a Saturday when we discovered our water heater leaking. Ken came out in about an hour and replaced the water heater. Great service. Ken had everything up and running in about 4 or 5 hours including getting the new water heater for us and giving us operational instructions.

I needed to replace my water heater, as it was making scary sounds from the debris inside. Harris responded quickly and kept me informed throughout the process via text message and phone call. The technician did a good job of informing me of my choices. They finished the work within a couple of hours of signing the paperwork. The workmanship was very good. They replaced hard pipes with flex lines for earthquake safety and extra shutoff valves to isolate the recirculation line. The technician explained the permitting process with the city. I thought they were a bit expensive, but I was very satisfied with the overall experience.

Danny Jimenez was able to easily clear our clogged kitchen sink drain. He was very friendly and worked quickly after offering me a couple of fair quotes to choose from. We are considering a water heater upgrade in the future, and we'll likely call on Oak Plumbing to do the Job. I would certainly recommend Oak Plumbing to anyone seeking help with their Water Systems.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
