"Tom is phenomenal! I recommend him to anyone in need of massage therapy services. My father is terminally ill and under hospice care. Since he is now bed ridden, I was hoping to find someone to do geriatric massage therapy. I did a lot of research and contacted several massage therapists, and I put a request on Thumbtack for a masseuse to provide my father some relief and healing touch. Tom contacted me within 24 hours and was absolutely wonderful with regards to accommodating my family's needs and requests. He came to the house and after one session, my father said it was one of the best experiences he's ever had. I am thrilled to have found him on Thumbtack!"

"I initaly hired Josh as a personal trainer to help me lose weight. During the first few workouts I experienced pain that my primary doctor diagnosed as gout. Josh helped me with a holistic type nutrition that helpedrestore my blood filtration and allowed me to finally move better to lose weight. He really took his time to come up with multiple solutions to my complex problem."

"I had an amazing massage experience with Massages by Paul. Paul traveled to my residence and set up his massage bed right in my living room. From beginning to end he was very professional. I received a 90 min deep tissue massage that was tailored to my specific needs. Followed by a relaxing overall softer massage to soothe my muscles. Every knot that I had was worked out and I got up feeling extremely refreshed. I will definitely be using Paul's services again in the near future. Lastly, this was the best massage I've truly ever had as I received everything I needed. Paul is a great listener and I highly recommend him as your personal massage therapist! Parisa"

"Got a massage with Erin and it was very therapeutic. I highly recommend her because she seems to have a knack for finding trouble areas that you don't even realize was there. Came to her because I had problems with my neck and back. And during the consultation she suggested that working with the chest muscles first will help alleviate pain and other problems with my neck and back. Turns out she was right and after a few sessions and following her after care recommendations, my neck and back feels so much better."

"First time using Thumbtack and desperately needed a massage for significant pain. Received a response from CJ rather quickly and she stayed late to help me. The massage was wonderful and I left feeling a lot better. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for pain management options."

Kathy is also what I call a body specialist she stretches you using various techniques and also uses reflexology to help your body heal and work better. Kathy has restored my husband's back and has helped me tremendously w my self esteem And motivation she is a blessing! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
