Chris did major pruning on two trees. He has a great eye for what and where to cut and for what the trees need. He is a fine person to work with and the cost was reasonable. He and his crew were careful not to damage plants and they did a thorough cleanup.

Jose came out quickly to give us a quote and arrived on time to do a deep cleanup of our overgrown yard. He pruned all our rose bushes and tended to the bald patches of our lawn. We were very pleased with his work and look forward to him coming again soon.

Excellent service! We bought a house with a lot of plants and trees that would be unfriendly to our young kid. We hired them to uproot a lot of those kid hazards so we could plant more appropriate plants. Their bid was fair for the amount of work it involved. There was a large Palm, 3 smaller king palms, 4 bushes, 2 avocados, 1 guava, tons of shrub and vines, and some other thorny plants. Oh they also trimmed a big tree in our front yard. They were able to come on short notice and get the job done quickly within a few hours. Thanks Laan's!

I was just rescued by the landscaping fairies. In truth, I did not have their ideal project at hand-- they've done lovely commercial and residential sprawls, but I had a mess of a jungle in my yard and the front of the house. They tackled it with a lot of skill and at least as much muscle and I feel like I own my place again. My neighbor then talked them into doing their, er, less challenging... project. These are very good people who won my heart even before the dug out the first hell-shrub-- because they remembered my dog's name and asked about him as well as me. That will go for miles with rescued dog people-- always.

Hired Ben to take care of my lawn service for the month as of today. Will re-evalaute after the first month to bring more customers around my neighborhood. So far, he is very knowledgeable with the lawn maintenance. He will come back next week to finish the rest of the yard work such as trimming/pruning and removing weeds. So far, Mr. Parks has shown me good positive outcome with my lawn. More feedback to follow throughout the month contract upon hiring him.

I contracted Green Team to clear out a yard that had been neglected for five years. It was overgrown with thorny blackberries, volunteer trees spouting from the lawn, and weeds and vines everywhere. Matt and his crew did a thorough and quick job of clearing the place out, while maintaining and pruning the few healthy plants left behind. The yard is now set up for a nice revival, and I'm very happy. The crew did everything they said they would and a little extra, too. I will be happy to use Green Team again. Highly recommended.

Rob and his team were great. Prior to the tree trimming they were quick to respond with our questions and provided good detail on what they would do. We were impressed by how much they were able to take off (far more than just pruning), as well as the clean up job they did after the fact. I would recommend Rob to anyone.

We are thrilled to have found Francisco! Reluctantly and with much trepidation, my extremely picky husband agreed to hire a garden service. - "No one will manicure my lawn the way I like it!" After a couple of negative experiences, we heard about Francisco Ramos. Francisco with his work quality, professionalism, garden knowledge and expertise, and work ethic are all the things my husband and I were looking for in a garden service. We have the greatest of confidence in all the work he does for us always going above and beyond from tree and shrub trimming, slope clearance, rose pruning, and most importantly, manicuring our lawn! We couldn't be more pleased and highly recommend Francisco Ramos Garden Service!

We hired Green Thumb Landscaping to refresh the landscaping in our front yard. They pruned trees, repaired our sprinkler system, laid sod, removed some old plantings and added wood chips / rocks. Oscar Lara (owner) is very pleasant, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about this work. We are very happy with the result. His prices are fair and reasonable. We highly recommend Green Thumb Landscaping.

David knows plants, and especially trees. I had four large olive trees that were in poor shape. He meticulously trimmed and pruned them to proper shape, removing old or dead limbs, leaving only healthy branches for new growth. He fed them the right nutrients and now they look great! I highly recommend David!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

    • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
    • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
