Juliet is fabulous! She tutors both my children, son (15) and daughter (13). One for SAT prep and the other for basic writing skills. The child that requires the "basics" has been identified with an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The children have completely different personalities and learning styles yet she is able to adapt and personalize the curriculum for their needs. She is very personable, dependable and extremely professional. My children absolutely love her. My daughter says, "she should get a million stars - she is exquisite". I highly recommend her services.

Mike was a pleasure to work with as I prepared for my college Algebra final. I am a returning college student and a bit rusty in my math skills. So, I needed a tutor to help me get back on track. Mike was the perfect fit for me. He is always punctual, and ready to get to work. He made me feel confident in my math skills and taught me in a way that was clear, and easy to understand. Thank You, Mike!

Words can't describe how thankful I am to have met Joyee and his team. They were able to guide us through every step of the process which took a lot off of my shoulders. We have used other tutors and services in the past, but really nothing comes close to what we got here!

I am not one to leave a ton of reviews for services and I have had mixed success with Thumbtack, but I think this man is an unsung hero!!! My daughter has struggled in math for years, since grammar school, and is now in 8th grade. She continued to struggle with a different tutor. We have been working once a week with Mr. Matlak now for about six weeks and the difference is simply amazing. She just got her first "A" in a math quiz since grammar school and we both nearly cried in relief and joy. The two most important things about him - he KNOWS the concepts cold (some tutors DON'T), and he is PATIENT. I came to the conclusion that my daughter simply would not get the pace of learning or individualized attention in the public school setting that she needs for this particular topic. She is doing well in other topics but math is her Achilles heel. I didn't have the patience (or the knowledge) to help much and it became a source of frustration for both of us. It is such a RELIEF to see her more confident and not stressed about math now!! I can't say enough good things about Mr. Matlak. He promptly answered my inquiries, quickly provided two references who gave glowing reviews, and we are so happy to have him. We didn't want to go the Sylvan or other company routes - Mr. Matlak comes to your home, sits down with your student, and gets to work. I can't believe I did not invest in my child's future earlier in her school career - it is well worth it. We do an hour a week and it has made a VAST difference. I have no relation to Mr. Matlak (other than to sing his praises) and I would be happy to provide anyone interested with additional comments. Update April 22, 2015: Our daughter continues to work with Ray weekly and is now pulling a "B" average, coming up from the "D" average she was pulling when we started. Not struggling and spending so much time on math has allowed her to focus on her other classes and encouraged her to bring her other grades up as well as she prepares to enter high school. We couldn't be more pleased to see our daughter's confidence growing with respect to math. We'll keep him through COLLEGE if he's willing!! All kidding aside, Ray is well worth the investment, even if your budget calls for less frequent tutoring sessions.

My stepdaughter was struggling in geometry so I looked into tutors online and went with the Elite Home Tutoring because they had the best reviews and prices. They are very professional, very responsive to e-mails, and accomodating when it comes to scheduling conflicts. They were also very honest and helpful when I asked how many hours a week my stepdaughter should be seeing a tutor. I am extremely pleased with their services!

Jenny is the best! She worked with my son to get him through a few years of Math. Jenny was the perfect combination of knowledge and encouragement to my son. She was great at leading him to understand the concept and had a sweet disposition and personality working with him. He would not let me get any other tutor besides Jenny . . . a true complement coming from a 13 year old boy! She is responsible and always showed up on time. She is certified in so many things that I am certain there will be a need for her again in the near future for our family. Highly, highly recommend.

James started tutoring my son ending of last school year (the Last month of school.) My son was at risk of not participating 8th grade promotion. Not only did his grades improve, but fulfilled the requirements for graduation. James has been a Great influence for my son. He is dedicated and really cares about the future of his students. She is great! I was in need of a SAT english tutor in order to compete for a spot at the United States Military Academy at West Point. She showed up on time and if needed would stay extra to make sure I actually improved. I was extremely confident heading into my test and was accepted into West Point. I highly recommend her to anyone in need of any help with english. In addition, she helped me with writing a letter to West Point on why I want to attend. She is great!!!

Wendy was an amazing fit with our son. He needed someone who would be there to teach when necessary and to pull him along when he was capable, but not motivated to do the work. I would whole heatedly recommend Wendy to anyone needing assistance. I assure you it will be time well spent. My son had less than a 2.0 before working with her as a sophomore and his final semester of his senior year was a 3.8. We tried many tutors before and around Wendy, because I wanted my son to have a tutor 4 nights a week and in the end only Wendy connected with him and made a difference on just 2 nights a week, instead of 4. I have given Wendy permission to give my number to interested parties, if they wish to speak to me directly for feedback.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
