Andres and his crew took only 2 days to till, prep, install an entire new irrigation system and lay sod for a yard that is over 1000 sq ft. Others quoted 4 days at a higher cost. We are very pleased with the final results and would highly recommend Andres and his Regs Tree and Lawn Services for any of your future landscaping needs! A++

I highly recommend this company. The owner Steve is very straight forward about pricing and wont try to nickle and dime you with small things you don't need to get the job done. Steve is very knowledgeable and was able to answer all of my questions on the spot. The best part about working with Steve is that he is thinking multiple steps ahead. He wants to know what your future plans are so that he can save you money down the road. I am putting in a concrete walkway around the side and back of my new home and Steve recommended I set up irrigation lines for the planter I plan to put along the back fence of my property. By putting in the irrigation now it will save me a significant amount of money in the future because I wont need to dig a trench under the walkway to run the line. As a Marine Vet. Steve is able to manage his workers well and get the job done quickly, and if there is a delay for what ever reason he communicates with you immediately so you don't feel like you are out of the loop on your own home improvement project.

The UrbanGardener (Chris) installed drip irrigation in my back yard. Chris did a good job and was great to work with. The price was very fair and the system works great with no problems. I would recommend The UrbanGarderner for your irrigation/landscaping needs.

Chris was on time for the estimate and very knowledgeable. He scoped the bid out and provided great detail for what he would use in the irrigation installation job. Ultimately, we had to put the job on hold, nothing having to do with Chris, but I would recommend him based on his experience and ability.

Even with all of the challenges my old place threw at Riyaz, he kept to his quote and got the job completed. Great job and I'll be calling on Evergreen for any and all future irrigation work.

Raygoza's did an excellent job and were priced right! I am very selective when I use contractors and expect good communication, professionalism and a good job! They fulfilled my expectations! As I told Carlos, their work affects our company reputation so I need the job to be done right! He and his crew did it right!

Luis from Brandon's tree service arrived at my house the very same day I posted this job. He showed up on time and provided a fair quote and gave me a copy of his insurance without even asking. After i selected this contractor, he gave me a start date and time and showed up exactly as planned. His employee was very skilled and professional. I have a 30-40 ft Ficus that needed to be trimmed and shaped and he did just an outstanding job. I've had this done before by another contractor who stripped almost every leaf off the tree and had me very worried it wouldn't survive. But Brandon's tree service left it looking neatly trimmed, thinned, shaped and enough leaves so it doesn't look bald.

I would not hesitate to recommend HCC. Such an easy and seamless transaction and process from the very beginning . Keli's response time is so quick - which was very refreshing after chasing around a couple contractors just to get a bid on our project. Thank you for all your help and hard work Keli - and thank you for making our project run so well.

Fernando Ramos has been our gardener for many years. We had a small yard with many palm trees. Fernando made our small garden look great and took the best care of our palm trees . We now have a large yard and he has done an amazing job of transforming the backyard and side yard to a beautiful drought resistant garden. He's has also updated our lighting and irrigation systems. He does it all! We highly recommend Ramos Gardens!

Form and Focus completed a full landscaping job for us this past spring. Our backyard began with all dirt, and by the end, we had attractive hardscape, redwood fences, artificial turf, a raised cement deck with seat wall, landscape lighting, a gas firepit, drip sprinklers, and complementary planter beds to accent the perimeters. From the design phase through completion, Jacob and his team were very professional, and especially responsive to our design change requests throughout. We would highly recommend Form and Focus for any of your landscaping projects.

I have used Socal twice now on each one of my houses and I am locked in for life! Adrian, Charles and the crew at Socal really know how to treat their clients. I am always impressed when they take the time out to follow up and check in with me on the process, timelines or if their is a delay. They do quality work and at a reasonable price. I can't wait to schedule my next job with Socal! :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
