Tom is great. Very happy I found him. I did work on our bathroom renovation, including: vanity install (very tricky IKEA cabinet that other handymen couldn't handle), plumbing, electrical, patching & paint, window install, and stucco repair. I immediately extended him to do some work on our front and back doors. All great. And now, I've hired him again to build a fence and gate for us in the front yard. I will be calling him again in the future, and I encourage anyone reading this to do the same!

I had never done any renovations before, and I was concerned about working with a contractor. I am so glad that I chose Excel Construction to remodel my kitchen and bathroom. Eyal and the workers were a pleasure to work with. The main things that I appreciated while working with them were: - They paid attention to my needs, my thoughts, my ideas, and my vision and worked within my budget (which was the most important thing in this remodeling). - Eyal with his office staff made sure to pull all permits for the work and they just informed me when they got them or about any stage of the permit (other builders who quoted me said they did not pull permits) - Eyal made sure to spend a lot of time consulting me and explaining me before the remodeling began. This included many discussions on layouts, appliances/fixtures, designs, what to expect..... -Eyal scheduled their crew and subcontractors. They were able to completely renovate my kitchen and bathroom in 9 weeks. They worked quickly and efficiently. -They paid attention to all the details even the small ones and made sure that everything was completed to my satisfaction. - All the materials that they used, were selected by me and they used high quality raw materials. Overall, I had a good experience working with Excel Construction and would not hesitate to use them again.

Daniel, Mario and the rest of the team at World Class Construction are honestly the best crew I’ve ever hired, and I’ve done quite a few remodeling projects over the last 20 years. They are extremely professional, courteous, fairly priced, and best of all – fast! My wife and I were very impressed by the speed at which our luxury bathroom remodel was completed, and trust me when I say this was no ordinary job…. everything was custom, and they stepped up to the challenge and delivered. Overall, we are 100% satisfied – so satisfied in fact, that we immediately hired them again to remodel our garage conversion project. Thank you World Class Construction!! (PS, a lot of companies ask you to write a review… we were not asked – our bathroom just looks that AWESOME ☺.)

This is just an initial review, and I will post one again when the remodeling projects are completed. Ryan Dodson has been a pleasure to work with from the outset. He is punctual, responsive, professional, courteous, and above all, trustworthy. Both my dad and I liked him instantly (my dad gave me a "thumb's up" when Ryan left our home the first time after the initial consult). Even though I informed Ryan that we were still in the process of receiving additional bids, he went above and beyond even before he was hired. I work in the legal profession, so we did our due diligence and interviewed several contractors, did the necessary licensing checks, etc., before hiring Ryan. My dad and I look forward to working with Ryan on our kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects. Another review to follow upon completion.

Solidesign+Build skillfully renovated the entire interior of my home following water damage, installing new tile and hardwood floors, remodeling the bathroom, repairing walls and installing cabinets, painting the interior and plumbing. All work was performed timely, with quality materials and at a competitive price. What truly sets the company apart is its owner, Brad, who personally oversees all work and is very responsive. I highly recommend Solidesign+Build!

David was an absolute pleasure to work with. From the beginning he was very clear on what we should expect. He helped us figure out what would be the best options for our project. He was always on time and the assistant he brought was equally attentive and qualified. Not only did he make suggestions but he was constantly looking for ways for us to save money or cut costs with the locksmith and other parts we purchased. David, thank you for your beautiful work! I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for some remodeling or repair work done/

I can’t express what a blessing it was to find Ezra is such a time of need. I had been going through a long, drawn out kitchen remodel with a different general contractor, but wasn’t getting the response, results and overall satisfaction I desired. I decided to take matters into my own hands and hired out to finish the work. I came across Ezra’s company. THANK GOD for him!! This experience was like night and day from the previous experience. Ezra was always PERSONALLY available and very quick to address and correct any issues (only very minor). He stayed on top of his workers and visited the site regularly, sometimes for hours at a time. Ezra expects only PERFECTION from his team and anything else is unacceptable. The end result is BEAUTIFUL. We are so happy!! Ezra’s tile guy completed a very difficult and time consuming Herringbone Subway Tile pattern backsplash in a matter of a few days. However, Ezra was there every step of the way, checking in and making sure it waS PERFECT and redirecting if it didn’t meet his standards. We had one dedicated worker who was very polite and worked hard - didn’t matter how late it was - he was dedicated to complete the job and make sure I was happy. Ezra is that guy that you will always keep the number— he becomes sort of a friend/family that you can call to help you whenever he can and just because he is a good person. This is the quality and just human kindness that’s missing from a lot of companies. In the disgusting rat race that we live in today, people forget about just being s good person. It’s so refreshing to see it’s alive and well, even if only a rare few...... The price was fair and considering that I made a contact I’ll use over and over, I feel I certainly got the better deal. I really do believe he was heaven sent and I’m so grateful for him. I’m happy to send anyone photos or offer a site visit to see his work in-person, if you are on the fence. Just hire him - you will NOT be sorry!!! (Just have to share him, like the rest of us! Hahaha)

I did my research before choosing Joe to remodel my master bathroom. Thumbtack was very helpful in connecting me with some great companies. But after researching each of them on google as well as other sites, I knew that Joe with State Wide Construction and Remodeling in Sherman Oaks was the right contractor. And I was right! The remodel of my master bathroom turned out way better than I had even imagined

A to Z Construction performed 2 complete bathroom remodels ( down to the studs) and repaired all the plumbing and prior water damage. Their crew had all the necessary skills to perform the work and worked every day until the job was complete. They added a second crew for the second bathroom which was much appreciated and took weeks off the completion time. Work was completed ahead of schedule. Very happy with the results. Highly recommended.

I worked with Joseph on my home remodel. He was very accommodating. I had many special request that he made sure where completed with the most utmost attention to detail. They gutted my kitchen, my bathroom and and remodeled my kitchen and renovated my kitchen. He put in a beautiful tile surround on the shower with a custom glass surround. He made awesome recommendations on where to choose all the finishes. His cabinet maker is a true artist and they made it all custom. Many ammenities he thought of to make this a perfect custom kitchen I will enjoy forever. The Caesarstone counter tops and tile backsplash are beautifully installed. The led under cabinet lights were a great recommendation. The tradesmen who worked on the house were very friendly and accommodating. They left a clean jobsite EVERY day. Overall this was the most pleasant remodel I have ever had done and this is the 5th house I had remodeled.

I cannot say enough good things about Guy and his crew. Amazing job from start to finish. Guy took our small idea and turned it into a masterpiece! He was on time and on budget! Two things that I thought were unheard of when it comes to remodeling! Guy was patient and responsive and answered every question without judgement or delay. Construction Owl will most certainly be our first call when we begin our next home remodeling project.

Ari Miller from Treeium was awesome as a general contractor. He was there from start to finish and was punctual with updates to the schedule. We needed all of the work done in three weeks before hosting a wedding at our house. The front and back yards turned out great and we had many positive comments from our guests. I highly recommend Treeium and especially Ari for all your landscaping and remodeling projects.

LA Rocca builders along with J Balian Construction and Grandeur Construction these 3 teams that Christian put together is like the saying goes “it takes a village to raise a child” well it takes 3 teams to build a home, which is what happen with our home we had so many problems with other contractors and they couldn’t do what we wanted them to do. They remodeled our home inside and out. We remodeled our master bathroom, kids bathroom, and kitchen with Skyline Construction. I strongly recommend Skyline to anyone looking for a responsible, transparent, communicative, and above all else, quality professional general contractor for remodeling, renovation, consulting, etc. Communication was timely, something extremely valuable with complex projects. Work estimates and risk factors has high accuracy with regard to both time and cost (this is a very uncommon feat in the industry). Quality of work and professionalism of workers on-site were supreme (I was personally present 2-3 times a day, every day). In addition to all this, Skyline continued to take care of us several weeks after the project was done and the contract ended. They made sure to take care to reseal, re-caulk, and/or fix any problems or flaws we found (we only found minor, trivial stuff) as we started living in the house and as fixtures, plumbing, tiles, and flooring begin to settle into their final resting positions. Skyline anticipated this settling, informed us that this is natural, and continued to send in their workers and technicians to make sure every single detail was excellently taken care of. Highly recommended. If you go with Skyline, you choose to go with a real pro. I am definitely hiring them for my next project.

We have used Joe Ghandour first for our kitchen remodel and now for our bathrooms as well as some painting and other improvements. He is an outstanding contractor to deal with. Down-to-earth, honest, knowledgeable, detail-oriented, conscientious, and above all that, responsive. When he says he is going to be there, he is there, not like others I have dealt with who shrug you off for weeks. He is continually aware of our budget, offers suggestions, and calmly resolves any unforeseen issue that arises. His workmanship is sensational, and makes my middle-class home look like an elegant showroom. Top notch business and the only one we would use for any remodeling or construction projects.

We hired Curtis construction services for an entire master bathroom remodeling and our jack and jill bathroom. Our remodeling project included the complete demolition of the two bathrooms to the studs and rebuild them to a brand new and modern look including all the amenities and home automation features. Daniel worked with us from the planning stage and he suggested many available options on how and what we can do while discussing with us about the advantages and disadvantages of all the options including the financial aspect and the differences that we will get for each changes. The remodeling work started on time (same day as Daniel promised) while the workers were polite, qualified and very dedicated to the work, making sure that everything will finish to our satisfactory while keeping the working area as clean as possible while working in both bathrooms at the same time. Because we were so happy with Daniel and his people, we will hire them soon again for another remodeling project at our house.

Mitch had completed two bathroom renovations that my wife and I were very pleased with. Initially we weren't sure what to expect but In the end, it turned out exceeding our expectations due to some guidance and suggestions by Mitch. He was very easy to work with and conscientious of keeping the surrounding area clean from the debris. We highly recommend his services.

We hired W&W builders group to do nearly all house renovation - open up and completely remodel the kitchen, create a master suite, remodel our second bathroom, change hardwood flooring and do interior paint. All team was very professional, knowledgable and always available to answer any questions or solve any issues. In approximately 10 weeks, they transformed the house into a modern masterpiece. Perhaps the best attribute of w&w is that they take pride in their work and want to do the job right. We had new flooring installed in the master bedroom, which did not match the other floors, so they refinished all the floors they all look the same. Our project manager Gil sat down with us and went through the whole contract, line by line. In terms of prices, they are not inexpensive, (also not expensive) but what we got was a top-of-the-line job from experts using quality materials. They were able to anticipate any issues and fix them right away. The price on the contract was the price we paid, no surprises. I highly recommend W&W Builders group and would use them again if we needed another home remodel

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
