We had Tom repair weather stripping on our front door and three sets of french doors, repair a bedroom door that would not close, and adjust/repair front doors so it would open and close more smoothly. He was open to feedback as my husband can be particular and made adjustments. He noticed our laundry door wasn't opening/closing properly and he just went ahead and fixed it which was a nice bonus. He responded quickly to emails which made scheduling easy. He was mindful of removing his shoes per our request and cleaning up after his work. We will be calling him back to complete more work around our house as needed.

TJ was a Godsend to me in my third trimester of pregnancy! He was extremely professional, knowledgeable and courteous from our initial consult right thru the completion of the job. As others have stated in their reviews, it's a comfort to know his prices are what he quotes. Technically, the jobs I needed done were minor plumbing fixes but they were enormous to me pressed for time with family guests flying in and no clue of how and when I could fix them. TJ is friendly, timely, considerate and most of all efficient in getting my kitchen sink leak and my master bath leaks fixed in no time. I actually look forward to having him back to help me check other items off my list of home repairs and maintenance todo's. So worth every dime ;)

I hired Juan from Creative Electric because I am doing a home renovation and needed new lighting in my kitchen and bathroom as well as a fan in both my dining room and bedroom. There wasn't any electricity where the fans were being installed so Juan had to run wiring to them. I also have a water fountain outside that I wanted hard wired into a switch. Juan was knowledgeable, professional, fair and kept me in the loop with some of the issues that arose. I would recommend his work to any one.

We hired Excel Construction to do a complete kitchen remodeling and enlarge the existing space by expanding the walls several feet to the patio area. The new kitchen included the installation of the upper and lower cabinets, new paint, new backsplash, marble counter top, LED lighting and new dishwasher, stove and range. Eyal, the project manager and Revital (the lady that we worked with in regards to all the documents, payments and permits) from the office who did an outstanding job helping us. During the work, we clearly noticed that they were always made sure that the costs will remain the same and won’t pass the budget that was set at first and they made sure the job was done accurately. All the sub-contractors that they employed for our house (carpenters, electricians, painters etc.) were outstanding, qualified and experienced. We were very fascinated that our project Eyal was able to complete the entire kitchen few days earlier than he promised us. We were always given a personal attention by Eyal, who was very good in communication and organized and by Revital. The new kitchen looks perfect and very useful and we strongly recommend them and we will hire them again for any remodeling project we may have.

From the cabinets to countertops, flooring, lighting, electrical, backsplash, sink, plumbing and painting there is not one thing I wish he had done differently. I first met Brad Snapir in 2011 when we met to discuss adding a second story onto our house in West Los Angeles which included a master bedroom, large bath, two closets and an additional reading room in back of the bedroom. All in all we added around 900 feet or perhaps a little more. It took us many meetings over almost a year's time before my husband and I were ready and prepared to begin the building process. Throughout this whole time Brad was understanding, patient and excellent at offering suggestions as to our remodel and willing to spend hours and hours meeting with us. We began the remodel in September of 2012 and we were back in the house in March of 2013 which was extremely quick. Needless to say there were questions and problems which arose during the building process but my husband, Brad and I were always able to work out whatever the problem was to everyone's satisfaction. If something had to be altered or changed in any way, Brad did it and did it well. We were very happy with the outcome of the remodel and happily moved back into the house after only 6 months although everyone told us it would be a year at least. Well they were wrong. Brad and his crew did the work quickly and well. If anything was not done exactly as I wanted they fixed it to be the way I wanted. I so appreciated the work that when I decided to remodel my kitchen in 2015 I immediately called Brad for the job. He worked with me in designing what I needed and ordering the necessary appliances, tile and countertops. I absolutely love the kitchen and would change nothing. It is exactly what I had in mind. The one other thing I want to point out about Brad is that over the years I have had several very very small jobs at the house which Brad has been so willing to just send one or two or three of his guys in a most timely manner and get the small job done. This has been a god-send as we all know how difficult it is to get work done on small jobs. I would recommend Brad and his company to anyone who wants a remodel large or small done and done well. I can’t express what a blessing it was to find Ezra is such a time of need. I had been going through a long, drawn out kitchen remodel with a different general contractor, but wasn’t getting the response, results and overall satisfaction I desired. I decided to take matters into my own hands and hired out to finish the work. I came across Ezra’s company. THANK GOD for him!! This experience was like night and day from the previous experience. Ezra was always PERSONALLY available and very quick to address and correct any issues (only very minor). He stayed on top of his workers and visited the site regularly, sometimes for hours at a time. Ezra expects only PERFECTION from his team and anything else is unacceptable. The end result is BEAUTIFUL. We are so happy!! Ezra’s tile guy completed a very difficult and time consuming Herringbone Subway Tile pattern backsplash in a matter of a few days. However, Ezra was there every step of the way, checking in and making sure it waS PERFECT and redirecting if it didn’t meet his standards. We had one dedicated worker who was very polite and worked hard - didn’t matter how late it was - he was dedicated to complete the job and make sure I was happy. Ezra is that guy that you will always keep the number— he becomes sort of a friend/family that you can call to help you whenever he can and just because he is a good person. This is the quality and just human kindness that’s missing from a lot of companies. In the disgusting rat race that we live in today, people forget about just being s good person. It’s so refreshing to see it’s alive and well, even if only a rare few...... The price was fair and considering that I made a contact I’ll use over and over, I feel I certainly got the better deal. I really do believe he was heaven sent and I’m so grateful for him. I’m happy to send anyone photos or offer a site visit to see his work in-person, if you are on the fence. Just hire him - you will NOT be sorry!!! (Just have to share him, like the rest of us! Hahaha)

Ruben was very fast in contacting me after I submitted my request for demolition of old tile and vanity, and installation of bathroom floor and wall tiling. He also has someone that can come out to do custom glass shower door on top of a bath tub which I also had done. Ruben and his crew were very efficient and quick while working in the bathroom. His prices are reasonable. The tile came out very nice. The only problem I experienced was that two to three times Ruben cancelled on me and we had to reschedule. One time he confirmed he was coming but then later that evening he had to reschedule to another day.

Rami was very responsive. Bath tub tiles had to be broken to take out the dead possum under my bathtub leaving a gaping hole. I needed the job done fast and well. Rami responded quickly to my request for help. He viewed the damage and gave a quote on the same day. He agreed to get the job done two days later on a Saturday. He got replacement tiles to match the current tiles in my bathroom. His guys did a great job and cleaned up after themselves. Rami is the guy to call if you need to get the job done.

Had so many bad experiences with so many contractors until I finally found ABC. Joe, the guy who manages the project, is truly a sweetheart! While the job was not all smooth sailing, and is not even over yet, he takes the hassle and the stress of home reno off of your shoulders and makes it instead a wonderful experience. Happy with the outcome thus far, and truly grateful to have found Joe! He is the best out there! Simply A+ for everything!

I cannot say enough good things about Guy and his crew. Amazing job from start to finish. Guy took our small idea and turned it into a masterpiece! He was on time and on budget! Two things that I thought were unheard of when it comes to remodeling! Guy was patient and responsive and answered every question without judgement or delay. Construction Owl will most certainly be our first call when we begin our next home remodeling project.

WOW I can't explain how pleased my wife and I are with the work Eric and his team did at our house. We meet with multiple contractors and because both my wife and I work a lot we didn't have time or the knowledge to manage and run the project, so we wanted someone we could trust and someone to guide us through this remodel. We got really lucky this finding Skyline construction. We felt lost while we were trying to figure colors, tiles, and cabinet's, Eric helped us every step of the way and made the whole process painless. I am really appreciative of all the hard work and energy that Eric put into our remodel. Now our kitchen and bathrooms look like a cover of a magazine. If you're looking for someone you can trust and A+ quality work these guys are the right team. Thank you Eric!

We had 3 bathrooms remodeled by hillstar construction, which included 2 complete remodels (master bath and Jack/Jill) and 1 minor updating of guest bath. This is our first remodeling experience and lior and his crew made every effort to accommodate our needs and requests. We relied on lior advise for details and very happy of the outcome. lior responded promptly and communicated well, and his attention to details was really good. We also noticed that hillstar construction used higher end product than other contractors when we compared the estimates and asked specific questions. They installed frameless glass showers and completely replaced floors on two bathroom, changed countertops to quartz replaced we actually had to change painter (from different paint company) to lior crew as we did not like the original work. lior crew completely removed wall paper before painting, which original paint person could not do. Major part of renovation was completed less than 2 weeks, just couple of hours for installing glass showers later and some paint work due to change of painter along the way. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work done and the outcome. Also, LIOR went beyond as a contractor as to helping us manage the house while we were away during renovation, and it is very much appreciated. Bottom line, he can really be trusted for the quality of work he provides.

Had such a positive experience working with Solid Builders in 2006 when we added a gorgeous master bathroom, that they were the first people I consulted when I decided to do a major renovation of literally every room in my house in 2017. I trusted Brad and his crew to be respectful of my property and privacy, and to take special care of my cats who are not allowed outside. One of the things I like the best about this company is that the price they quote you is the ACTUAL price of the work. They do not try to "upsell" you. They will communicate honestly with you, including advising you when you are about to spend money unnecessarily. Brad actually SAVED me money! Another thing I really appreciated about everyone in this company is that when tell you a specific day and time they plan to work, they SHOW UP at that time with the materials they need (unheard of!) There isn't a lot of "down time," or gaps in the schedule. Lastly (and I could go on), these guys are very focused on client satisfaction. They do not settle for sub par work.

Just want to say I am so impressed with Moriah Remodeling. I was working with Eran S. He is my project manager. and with his crew. You couldn't ask for anyone better. The attention Eran gives to detail is helpful and refreshing. We are doing a complete renovation of our kitchen, powder room, flooring, family room, two bathroom and laundry room. We are so pleased with the them, they are always on time, protect your flooring, furniture. ... everything is so organized and surprisingly we were able to use their company portal. Today it is very hard to find a reliable company and we would defiantly will recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
