We hired Excel Construction (Eyal) to completely remodeling our kitchen and to design and build a large wet bar. The remodeling job that they did included the demolition of the existing spaces, the removal of several existing walls, rewiring of some electrical outlets and switches, re-plumbing the new spaces, remove and install new flooring, new upper and lower cabinets, install new marble countertops, installing new lighting fixtures, fresh interior paint, some drywall repairs and adding a new large island at the kitchen. Eyal and his working crew did a stunning remodeling job. Eyal create for us a complete design of the work based on what we wanted and needed, guided us through some space limitations of the house and presented to us some different ideas that met our needs. The remodeling job was delivered on time, within budget and with high quality. Eyal was at the house every day and made sure that the remodeling progress is on track. He was there for each and every step of the work, which was extremely important to us. We highly recommend them for anyone who is searching for high quality remodeling or construction work.

I needed to redo my small kitchen. From the initial contact with Debby to the end of the job Debby was there! I had ideas of what I wanted to do, but could not make it a reality. Debby with her creative ways and expertise was able to assist me in making my kitchen makeover an enjoyable and happy place! She drew the plans (since I am a visual person) and identified everything I would need. I liked the fact that she took time out to shop for the materials with me. I didn't realize there were so many hidden things that needed to be included. Most importantly, her passion for her work and cost of the project exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend Debby and will be hiring her again for my next project this upcoming spring.

Arman and his Crew are very reliable and great. good quality, there was some hiccups in the middle but he manage to resolve all the issues. He has way more experience than what he looks like as a young guy in this industry and I am so glad I hired him instead of other contractors. We did a Kitchen Remodel with him after getting a consultation on Kitchen Refacing. He came to our house and explained to us exactly the pros and cons of either options and even thou the price was way more than what we planned, but we realized this is the best option for increasing our homes value and he was absolutely right! we have already sold our home with the price we planned it. Thanks a lot

Our kitchen and bathroom renovation went so smoothly!! The owner, Guy, has a great eye for design and space planning so we just followed his lead because his ideas were so much better than ours. And at the end of it all, the execution was unmatched. This is definitely a company that cares about their clients. There was always somebody there to answer the phone, we had guys cell phone number in case we had any questions, and his staff is always pleasant and helpful. I would definitely hire him again.

I worked with Joseph on my home remodel. He was very accommodating. I had many special request that he made sure where completed with the most utmost attention to detail. They gutted my kitchen, my bathroom and and remodeled my kitchen and renovated my kitchen. He put in a beautiful tile surround on the shower with a custom glass surround. He made awesome recommendations on where to choose all the finishes. His cabinet maker is a true artist and they made it all custom. Many ammenities he thought of to make this a perfect custom kitchen I will enjoy forever. The Caesarstone counter tops and tile backsplash are beautifully installed. The led under cabinet lights were a great recommendation. The tradesmen who worked on the house were very friendly and accommodating. They left a clean jobsite EVERY day. Overall this was the most pleasant remodel I have ever had done and this is the 5th house I had remodeled.

Prior to hiring Kiko to install our Ikea Kitchen, I interviewed him on the phone to see how much he knew about the process. I shared my plans by email and Kiko presented a detailed quote taking into account every detail. I had already spoken to about three other installers, and although he was not the cheapest, hiring Kiko was worth every penny. He is a perfectionist and truely cares about the final product. Among all those I had interviewed, he came out as the one who knew about IKEA Kitchens inside out. Our kitchen was pretty large and had a complex design which required creativity and thinking out of the box. Kiko took his time to work around the details and produced a beautiful kitchen. Kiko and his team assembled and installed all the parts and cabinets within the timeframe specified in the contract and in a 4-day stretch with no interruption. One job at a time. I highly recommend Kiko for your nrzt IKEA kitchen project.

Over the last three years we have been using McCormick Construction to upgrade the house we purchased in 2008. Joe and his team have added a new Master Bed and Bath (2011) and last summer removed the attached single car garage and built us a man cave big enough for all my toys and my wife's crap. Both the Master Bed/Bath and Garage get very positive comments from the neighbors that walk by the house. Great workmanship, very creative problem solver and his team recently did my parents kitchen remodel last year. Highly recommend him.

Magen and Gil worked together each day to make sure everything was going according to the plans and Simon and his workers worked overtime many days to finish quicker. Magen and Gil were there every step of the way and Made sure all the work was done according to plan. Can’t be happier and just in love with my new kitchen and bathrooms. Go for it !

We remodeled our master bathroom, kids bathroom, and kitchen with Skyline Construction. I strongly recommend Skyline to anyone looking for a responsible, transparent, communicative, and above all else, quality professional general contractor for remodeling, renovation, consulting, etc. Communication was timely, something extremely valuable with complex projects. Work estimates and risk factors has high accuracy with regard to both time and cost (this is a very uncommon feat in the industry). Quality of work and professionalism of workers on-site were supreme (I was personally present 2-3 times a day, every day). In addition to all this, Skyline continued to take care of us several weeks after the project was done and the contract ended. They made sure to take care to reseal, re-caulk, and/or fix any problems or flaws we found (we only found minor, trivial stuff) as we started living in the house and as fixtures, plumbing, tiles, and flooring begin to settle into their final resting positions. Skyline anticipated this settling, informed us that this is natural, and continued to send in their workers and technicians to make sure every single detail was excellently taken care of. Highly recommended. If you go with Skyline, you choose to go with a real pro. I am definitely hiring them for my next project.

Centrepoint is about team work to get the job done and done with high quality. I helped hired them for my daughter’s garage conversion into an accessory dwelling unit which we saw as a great investment for extra income. We gutted the garage, prepared architectural plans, got it approved and started the project. The team at centrepoint was diligent and could not have been easier to work with. The ADU has all the amenities small kitchen, walk-in shower, bedroom, living room and washer/dryer unit. Centrepoint GC Alon recommend what should be added to the ADU to get the most for our buck when renting it out. I couldn't recommend them enough. They did such an amazing job I want to live there :) here is few picture of the finish ADU

Hiring a contractor can be a really stressful experience, but I'm happy to say that everything worked out really great with Meron and Doron of Go Pro Remodeling. My wife and I recently bought our first condo in Westwood, and needed to remodel the kitchen. We got a few bids from different contractors, and were extremely shocked to find out how expensive it is to remodel a kitchen. In the end, we decided to go with Go Pro because they had been referred to us, and had fair prices. They worked really quickly (throughout the holidays in the month of December), and got the job done exactly when we needed them to. There were a couple of times that we weren't happy with the workers, but Meron and Doron absolutely made it right. We went with beautiful Caesarstone London Grey countertops, and solid wood cabinets. The kitchen turned out really amazing. We are absolutely thrilled with the end-product, and will certainly use them again in the future for our next project.

Had my kitchen remodeled & new flooring through out Diego not only overseen every aspect of the job but ordered the material needed correctly. His men was a pleasure to work with on time clean very professional. Diego stopped by several times just to make sure everything was going good. And was always asking how he can help with moving furniture, to make it easier on us. I value there work and happy to have them do work for me.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
