Jared couldn't have been better. Very good at his job (assembled a couple beds, custom bedside tables, and installed a ceiling fan). He's also incredibly nice. I will be using him again without a doubt.

I wanted to replace the ceiling of my patio because it was made of corrugated aluminum and it was falling apart. Scott answered my project on Thumbtack, asked me for pictures and dimensions and was able to give me a very quick, accurate and more than reasonable quote for the entire job. He came over and took off the existing ceiling, and got rid of all the trash. He came in on another day to install the ceiling and he did a perfect job. Thank you Scott for a job very well done. Finally found a contractor I can trust.

Victor is a well experienced painter and handyman. I placed my job request and he replied with a very fair quote. I made appointment with him to come and looked at the job ,and gave a date and time needed to complete the drywall for my kitchen ceiling and painting family room. He completed the job on time as planned. He even helped out in some other little things that needs attention of handyman for free. I've already lined him up for some other work in my house and recommend him to neighbors and friends.

Dave Kelly and his guys are outstanding! Not only did they install the eight LED recessed lights in our family room ceiling without leaving a mess, Dave went the extra mile and had the white fixture trims custom painted (overnight) to match our exposed wood ceiling. Absolutely beautiful. The following week we had Dave back to install a new recessed fixture above our bar sink (again, Dave had the white eyeball trim painted to match our wood ceiling). Could not be happier with the service received from Homecrafters and will be having him back to do all of our home projects!

Ricardo saved the day! He helped finish a project for me that was left messed up by someone else! I would HIGHLY recommend him and his work! Ricardo gave me a fair price quote quickly and upfront once he saw what was my emergency hole in my ceiling situation-, a thorough explanation of what I could expect from his work and how it would look when it was done- literally he was here all day and now my drywall ceiling apocalypse hole in the wall crisis is transformed into a drywall miracle he did such a great job! Thank you!

I had attempted to install a ceiling fan in a bedroom, but after installing it, it wouldn't work. So I contacted Mr. Lopez through Thumbtack. He arrived on time; he is polite and professional. He had to take down the fan to inspect the wiring, which required unscrewing many small screws. But he quickly analyzed the problem , and fixed the wiring & re-installed the fan. I would recommend Mr. Lopez to anyone.

Ryan and crew are very professional and very detail oriented. The job was complex in the manner of repiping plumbing, installed fans, repaired dry rot, dry walled. I have had Dodson Construction back several times for several handyman items.

Raul did an amazing job for us. We initially wanted a roof repair, but then needed to have the drywall for the ceiling repaired. He quoted a fair price, and did an excellent job. We then asked if he did tile work, and again Raul quoted a fair price for laying tile in one of our rooms. So needless to say, but I’ll definitely be hiring Raul for future projects. 👍🏻👍🏻

David Guth is an extremely knowledgeable contractor with an extensive skill set for problem solving. He assisted us with a very tricky sound abatement project on our main dubbing stage requiring custom construction for noise isolators, ceiling insulation and some general studio refurbishment. The project completed on time and on budget. I would highly recommend David to anyone needing his expertise.

Working with Brad was the best decision I could have made! I am a first time home-buyer, so I am totally new to this world of home remodeling. I consider myself very lucky to have come across his company on this site. He is professional, efficient, and trustworthy. Furthermore, he's a truly good person. He completely remodeled my kitchen (new cabinets, expanding a doorway, and beautiful granite!), installed tile floor and baseboards downstairs, installed a french door, replaced all of my interior doors, and installed light fixtures in my hall. He was mindful of my budget throughout all of it, and my husband and I really appreciated that. He was also very quick to respond to any concerns we had. We absolutely love it all. Our floor is amazing! Our kitchen turned out beautifully! Thank you, thank you, thank you! We will definitely be asking him to return for future projects!

Giani Construction worked with us to complete a very large project of a kitchen, breakfast nook and great room. The project ended up being more challenging than just the size, when we went move a metal support beam up into the ceiling to increase the visual size of the kitchen and ran into issues pulling permits with the city. Giani saw to it that other items were attended to during the delay and the project kept moving forward throughout the permit process. We also ran into issues when the granite for our center island countertop was found to have a crack that prevented it from being fabricated. Giani worked with the granite yard and fabricator to get us a new undamaged piece that we loved more than the first. Giani and his entire team were courteous, clean and had excellent attention to detail. The cabinetry work was top notch and turned out beautiful. Rarely do you run into contractors that actually show up when they say they will, return phone calls, and have excellent communication. Giani is the entire package. We are extremely happy with the end result. Our kitchen and great room are sophisticated and look like a showplace, but are still comfortable and inviting. We have just hired Giani Construction back to assist us with a new project - a bathroom remodel. I would definitely recommend him to others!

Overall we were pleased with the final product. Guy was honest and responsive to our concerns. Got 4 of 5 due to jobs site coordination issues. Ended up with a considerable amount of tile left over based on the tile installers material list.

I hired Parsa Construction to paint my house and change my flooring from carpet to hardwood. I was very impressed with how professional and nicely the job was done. They made sure it was exactly what I wanted. The team was very professional and courteous. The hardwood flooring looks amazing. They painted the walls and ceilings as well as the base boards very neatly. I now have a modernized and beautiful home all thanks to Parsa Construction. The consultation was fantastic. The consultant, Enrique stopped by and told me exactly how they were going to do the job and what was needed in order to complete it. Their pricing was extremely reasonable and I couldn’t be more satisfied with their services. Thank you.

We decided to renovate our entire house, bathrooms, electrical, scraping ceilings, painting, etc. We had Santos as our general contractor who did almost EVERYTHING. The work was outstanding and we can't believe the work was done so quickly. We even had our neighbors look into the house and the ones that did ended up hiring Santos for their homes! Super honest, reliable, and fair. Highly highly recommend! We look forward to working with you on our next project! Thank you Santos- Alex and Diana

I have a Ruud HVAC system that was installed in March 2010 by the previous owner (who died unexpectedly in late April 2010). In September 2015 the air conditioning system started failing and I went through repeated attempts with the company that had installed the unit to fix costing my over $1400. It was never able to cool at all and the pipes kept frosting over, so I eventually gave up on fixing it. Now let us fast forward to April 2018 when I had an electrical fire in my living room that burned my flooring, wall, and ceiling. Because of that event, I went looking for a contractor who could do the needed repairs which took me 3 months before I found a wonderful contractor. As a result of working with that contractor, we talked about my air conditioning system and he recommended Calwide’ HVAC specialist Ronon Oshri to me. I thought, what the heck, I’ll let them take a look. Ronon was efficient and very knowledgeable and was able to identify the main problem that the installer never even assessed in 2015. Unless you live in the San Fernando Valley, you cannot imagine how necessary it is to have an adequate HVAC system. I can highly recommend Cal Wide for HVAC work and they are my go-to for keeping the system in good working order.

I have a rental property in North Hollywood which my dad bought back in the 60’s. A few month ago our tenant moved out after 15 years at the house, and we had to fix it all. We had to install new carpet flooring in the bed rooms, new paint to the walls and ceiling and we decided to replace the roof at the same time. Right at the time we started to look for a contractor for our project, a friend from work told me how excited he was with the new master bath he has just completed in his house with “This great contractor”. I decided to call that “Great contractor” and see what he has to say about my project. Not to mention, me and my wife we both work, we have 3 kids and we don’t have any time what so ever to spend with any unprofessional. Long story short… we met Leo at our property the next day. After 3 days the work began, and it all was completed in less than 2 weeks. I’m completely happy that finally I found the right contractor to do everything that I need without all the hustle around it. They finished the work on time, they were dedicated, they worked clean, there were no addons during the work. The schedule of payments worked perfect for me. It was a bit more than our budget but I decided not to look for the cheapest guy around (bad experience from another project I had a year ago), but to find a professional who will deliver for me exactly what I want, in my time frame in order for me to be happy, and I’m OK with paying for it. Let me tell you… finally I did the right thing. I’m very happy with the work and I recommend Leo to everyone I know.

Outstanding job! Ray and his employee were able to finish the job in 2 days, were always on time, trusting (left the key under the mat) and did an excellent job. In fact, Ray did such a good job that we are having him install crown molding around the ceiling and windows and he is re-staining and refinishing our oak wood staircase. I highly recommend him for any of the above jobs I highlighted.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
