FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I went to seminary with the goal of becoming a Presbyterian minister. My theology and did not mesh with the Presbyterians, so I never pursued ordained ministry with that tradition. Officiating at weddings was something I had been looking forward to, so I did some research, received my ordination from the Church of Spiritual Humanism, and have never looked back!
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I often have to trouble-shoot challenges at venues. I recently was doing a wedding that was planned as an outdoor ceremony, the bride's dream since she was 5 years old. However, it was pouring down rain on the wedding day. I suggested we arrange the chairs inside the reception hall with the aisle leading to the covered porch, so the bride and groom were "outside" with me on the porch and everyone stayed dry! It was beautiful, and the venue director was very impressed with my solution!
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Make sure you select an officiant you feel a connection to. You're entrusting a stranger, most times, to communicate your story to your guests, so make sure it's someone you are comfortable with!
