My son needed help with Spanish and Algebra. I thought Chemistry might become an issue later on. Eric found him a tutor able to do all 3! Allyssa has been great helping with everything. It was great not having to find separate tutors. Allyssa has been so patient and kind helping my son get back on schedule after his surgery. We love her!

My 13 year old son loved studying with John for SSAT. SSAT is a tricky and challenging test; we've worked with a number of tutors before, but John's pace, accessibility and sense of humor clicked perfectly with my son's needs and taste. John goes through a material quickly, but thoroughly, which helps covering a lot of ground in a reasonable time and makes every session very effective. It takes a number of qualities to make a good test tutor, and John has them all. My son's score improved after just a few sessions with John, but these sessions were also enriching and fun. We recommend him highly. Victoria

I'm so glad to have found Soham as my daughter's tutor. He was exceptionally talented in analysing the gaps and providing what she needed to improvise. I like the way he tutors by asking questions that provokes critical thinking in students. It's been 3 classes so far and I already see her brimming with confidence towards her SAT's and AP exam's. I highly recommend him!!!

I am amazed as to the quality of tutoring I received from Arbor Tutors given the low price. The tutor my daughter had was very sweet and very patient with geometry. You can't ask for a better tutor than the one we got. We chose to do the online tutoring. Five stars all the way.

I have been taking lessons from Lillian for a few weeks now. I absolutely love her teaching style. Each 1-hour class is intense and afterwards I feel like I have gotten to the next level. But more importantly it spurs me on to want to learn more. She is patient and kind, but quick to see where you are making a mistake and drilling you on that area so you rapidly start doing it right and forget your wayward ways. For anyone who is interested in learning Mandarin I highly recommend Lillian as a tutor!

Yevgeny tutored my son in Calculus and we are very happy with the results. My son didn't even like the idea of getting tutored; After I convinced him that he needs to get some help, he tried a couple of other tutors; Yevgeny was the first one he was happy with; Yevgeny is a no-nonsense type of person; He is knowledgeable and focused on getting the student to understand the concepts; I would highly recommend him.

Tim was a great teacher for me! He was easy to talk to,understood my questions, and helped me improve my weak points. After working with him for a few months, I was able to understand a lot of the material provided in the SAT test and improve a lot on my practice test. Overall, Tim is a great teacher for learning how to improve your English , especially to prepare for SAT test.

I have been studying for the GMAT for 3 years, have had 3 private tutors and have taken 2 courses. The GMAT consumed me, until I hired Bryce. After 3 weeks of tutoring my score jumped 60 points because Bryce taught me how to think about the GMAT in a way that Kaplan, Stratus or other courses simply do not teach. Customized, personalized learning. I knew the equations cold, but was missing the critical reasoning and strategic mindset necessary to take the test. Bryce re-focused me and re-framed how to think about the GMAT. Quite simply, if you live in the Bay area and need to drastically improve your score in a constrained amount of time and within a certain budget, you need to choose Warwick Strategies.

About

I have taught school for many years. I am familiar with the common core standards and entrance and exit standards of specific grade levels. It is all about helping the student improve and thereby boost his/her self-esteem and confidence in the areas in which I tutor them. As a teacher, I had tremendous test scores. Four of my five "children" (now adults) have received the presidential academic award. I attended very difficult college prep school prior to college which provided me with stellar skills. I have had several years of Latin, French, and Spanish, as well as the usual repertoire of subjects.

About

My name is Cameron Anetsky. What sets me aside from other tutors is that my priority is the student, their family, and their needs. I tailor my tutoring to each and every student. My teaching has a basis in the Saxon Method of teaching, but it is more than that. I teach not only the subject matter, but the tips, note taking, organization, and study skills that make each student uniquely successful. I am well versed in teaching most subjects, with special emphasis on Reading and Writing, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Math, and Science. I effectively teach skills that can be used later in their academic and professional careers: reading for retention, note taking, analytical skills, scientific analysis, nursing and patient care, and writing.

About

Having been fascinated with the inner workings of programs from a young age, I take joy in constructing my own within several platforms. I would be more than happy to teach those with the same passion for computer science. Languages I have worked on include Java, C++, Ruby and HTML. In regard to teaching these subjects, I have experience in the past teaching elementary school kids how to program their own robots. Your school assignments will seem just as easy to you in no time! I can also offer tutoring for Japanese, having been raised in a Japanese household and attended the San Francisco Japanese Language Class for over 10 years. I was also a teacher aide for AP Japanese at my local high school, so I know firsthand what challenges students' face when learning this particular language. With these experiences, I can teach Japanese like no other tutor can. I look forward to further correspondence!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
