I was absolutely delighted and happy about Happy paws services and training. Raquel is a true professional when it comes to dogs. I had "an emergency" travel overseas for three weeks. She took absolute great care of my puppy and training. I was amazed at Raquel's clarity in explaining how to work with my puppy and showing me what my puppy needs when it comes to obedience, being safe and happy. I received videos and chat updates regularly So I could see my puppy and know she is well taken care of. My puppy was very happy at her place, was treated as a family member, loved & very well taken care of. I couldn't have been gone as long as I was if it wasn't for Raquel's willingness to take care of my puppy and she made sure I had peace of mind while I was gone. Thank you. Brilliant work.

I hired Karen to help us with my newly rescued cockapoo that had a serious issue with aggressive behavior and biting. The first session with Karen was in my home for three hours. In that time Karen explained her background, philosophy, and approach to dog training, where I am the pack leader, not my dog.. The information she gave us was invaluable, and we worked with Jax, using everything Karen advised us to do. When we had our next session, Karen first sat with us to hear how things were going, and I was so excited to tell her of Jax's progress! I would definitely recommend Karen of Bow Wow Method to help you train your dog. She is friendly, professional, experienced, and reasonably priced. 👍🏼😊

Somehow reading a book with common-sense dog training tips did not give us confidence. Dee Cee shows you these methods & how they work--but it is up to you to do it over and over till you and your dog get it. Our dog did not have hard issues so were were looking for guidance more than a trainer that would come multiple times. Dee Cee showed us insider tips and all the details..demonstrating with our dog... to give us methods & confidence. She left 2 tools to use as we will continue to work with our dog. We wanted an hour private session in our home to target 3 simple issues and Dee Cee was just what we needed.

John has been such a help in teaching about potty-training my puppy, and now we are working on the fun stuff. I want my dog to grow up being well-trained so that others may enjoy him as much as I do! John is providing that path and I am so glad I found such a knowledgeable trainer!

Our trainer Denise has been such a great help with our crazy puppy. We hired her when the pup was 5 months old . We were in desperate need of training . Our pup was pottying in the house even though we had designated a spot for her to go. It was exhausting cleaning up after her all day. With Denise's help and expertise , our pup has learned were to go potty and we have learned as well the importance of consistency . It is evident that Denise is gifted as a dog trainer and our experience with her has been very professional . It is obvious she loves animals and there is a gentle way to train. Thanks Denise With love from Summer and the Courtney family:)

I first met Duane Overturf over 15 years ago, when he came to my home to train my dog Jumbuck. He assessed the dog immediately before deciding on the training. Training in the dog park followed the training at home. Apart from my dog having a wonderful character, he turned out to be one of my best dogs regarding obedience and reliability. About two years later he also came to our home to train Jumbuck's companion, a totally different type of dog, who also understood very quickly what was required of him. Duane has a knack for getting dogs to feel relaxed and make training enjoyable. He is very reliable, thorough, and i enjoyed working with him.

I would highly recommend Cassidy's services. She truly understands dogs and their behavior but more importantly understands human behavior. She helped me to see how my actions were affecting how my dog reacted. Since making the changes she recommended training my dog has become much easier and enjoyable for both of us.

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

Steve Welch of K9 Dog Training came to visit us and spent a great deal of time detailing his program and how it works. Steve and his associate, Wendy, were friendly, kind and considerate. As a result we let Babe, are Boston Terrier, and deeply loved little girl go with them to Training. We know she is happy and safe and in caring hands. I feel certain she'll return with some good lessons learned.

Tommy was my first experience of having a trainer and I couldn’t be happier that I found him. He taught me more in an hr than I ever imagined. He helped me tremendously with the problems I was having with my Doberman puppy. Tommy shows a great amount of confidence and is very in tuned with working with dogs. He is the real deal. Don’t look any further and call him up and he will be sure to exceed your expectations just like I did. Enjoy and Goodluck

I cannot recommend Philip and Michelle Kaough of K.O. Dog Training highly enough. They have been with us since we brought our Golden Retriever puppy home, and have been invaluable in helping us to train him. Philip and Michelle are extremely knowledgeable, easy to work with, and have helped us at every step of the way in training our puppy using positive reinforcement. “Patient and Constructive” is one piece of training advice that Phillip imparted to me as critical in training your dog. Those words always ring true. Philip and Michelle are patient and constructive with dogs and owners alike.

So I live in Alabama and have a friend in Tn. that had bought a dog from Vince. The dog was one of the best working dogs I have seen. The dog was the perfect balance of work and home. I reached out to Vince with some questions about a dog I had just bought. Being that I don't have the time to take off of work and fly out to California with my dog and train with him, Vince never once hesitated to answer my questions. I kept him up to date on my training and I hit a wall, I had a few problems I couldn't seem to work out. Vince offered very precise training advise and even went so far as to ask me for a few videos and then sent me some videos of the training I could use to show me exactly what I could do to accomplish my goals. Nobody else would have done that, nobody else would have cared. Vince truly cares about dogs and wants to make sure that you and your dog have the best relationship and quality of life possible. I am actively trying to find a way to get me and my dog to him so I can train with him and thank him in person for all that he has done for me. It's never hard to discern when someone is doing it because they love what they do or if they are doing it because they love them money it brings. I can assure you Vince is in it because he loves dogs and he loves what he does. Truly one of the best people I have met in the dog training industry. Thanks again Vince for everything you have done for a know nothing beginner like me.

Dave was such a great help to us in training our dog (or us, really)! He really took the time to explain the process and work with Sadie to overcome her fearful reaction to other dogs. She's made great progress & we look forward to more training sessions in the future. Highly recommended! Oh, and Sadie absolutely LOVES HIM.

I met Ron at a park in Anaheim Hills with my 4 month Rottweiler puppy. At this point, Diesel and I have had 2 lessons with Ron. I see a huge improvement with Diesel. He listens, is attentive, loose leash walks with me instead of dragging me, sits, comes, finds and can be coaxed from being agitated to relaxed in a matter of minutes. I now feel comfortable taking him to a park setting with kids, bicycles, skateboards and other dogs without the feeling of having to constantly have a tight hold on him or worried he will take off running. I highly recommend Ron and Dogwood K9 Training to anyone with a new puppy or highly excitable dog. Well worth the money!!!

This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

We love Maureen! She is patient and answers any questions I have during the week! She makes a personalized training schedule based on your families needs. I love that she shows my kids how to work with our puppy as well! We are learning how to raise a well behaved puppy with Maureen's help! We are already getting compliments on how well our puppy listens to us! The difference between our untrained dog and our new puppy is night and day.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

LeNai is a professional through and through and knows dogs amazingly well and can handle every size of dog. Walking, training, playing - she is a pro! But what really makes the difference for me, is that she is treating your dog like it is her own. She gives my Sasha so much love and helps her overcome her separation anxiety. She gives updates every day, and I can 100% rely on her. When I go on my trips, I have 100% peace of mind leaving my dog with LeNai.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
