When my mother passed last month, I was faced with the task of packing up her apartment and moving her things from Los Angeles to San Francisco. I have never hired movers before, and found the process very challenging. That challenge ended when I met Mario Borjas. I spoke to movers, many movers. Many would not give an on-site estimate, nor a binding estimate. Mario did both. Many movers asked for a deposit or 50% payment at time of pick-up. Mario did not. Many companies charged in excess of $3000 for an exclusive move LA to SF. Mario's bid was more reasonable and binding. Mario - and his crew Eric, Juan, and Antonio - did an amazing job. They packed and moved things efficiently and carefully. Nothing was damaged and the job was accomplished as promised. My friends, neighbors, and I were very impressed with their well-mannered professionalism. I enthusiastically recommend MGB Relocations for any moving projects. Thank you so much for making this task manageable for me and my family. I am very grateful for the success of this move.

Movers were on time and well equipped with gear and supplies to move everything inside my apartment. Professional, friendly, hardworking guys. The move took exactly what it was estimated to take and there were no surprise costs. All around a good moving company. Will likely use again if I decide to move in the future.

Frank is fast, experienced, and very effective at getting tasks done. We hired him to move some of the heavy items for our move and he did and awesome job. He also knows his way around a ton of furniture assembly and can assemble and all IKEA furniture without looking at the catalog! Hiring him again in a couple of days for more work we have.

From beginning to end, they were very easy to work with and a pleasure. Dalila was very prompt and gave me a great quote and service. She even found a team of three guys for me the next day! Jesse and the guys did an amazing job. I had a TON of stuff - from boxes to heavy furniture and antiques to heavy music equipment - and two different locations! I wasn’t even completely packed when they arrived, and they help me plastic wrap storage cubes, clothing in bags and boxes, etc. One stop at storage and another to the new house and 7.5 hours later the move was DONE! They had great advices out how to move things that weren’t packed and are very hard workers and nice guys. I will definitely hire you guys again when I move. Thanks again!

Larry and Dean were excellent movers and very professional. Although they charge by the hour, I could tell that they were working quickly to finish the move while still being careful with my belongings, They were very skilled at disassembling and reassembling my furniture without a hitch. Overall I think they were very reasonably priced and friendly and I would definitely recommend them to a friend!

Great service from an impressive crew. Meder, Kalys, and Hamzat provided great professional service. My wife and I were nervous at the age of the movers, but they were strong, efficient, and professional. Wrapped our items well - nothing damaged. I relied heavily on Thumbtack reviews in choosing 5 Star and I was not disappointed. My one critique would be that 5 Star could have done a better job of communicating what materials I needed to provide and what they were providing. There was some misunderstanding regarding what packing materials the movers were to bring with them. However, the crew were very creative and packed everything well even without the ideal supplies.

Barry and Mark were extemely professional, efficient and careful with all my furniture. I have mid century modern furniture so was concerned with movers caring for fragile items but can honestly say I will not use anyone else after this experience. They wrapped everything fragile in blankets with shrink wrap and were very detail oriented. Both of them have an awesome attitude and made the experience actually enjoyable. Thanks Flash Moving!

The guys worked harder than any movers I've used. Did a 20- hour day moving us from Long Beach to Fresno and drove back all in one day. Best rates around. Very trust worthy, great communication and made our stressful relocation so much easier and stress free! I would give 10 stars if I could!

He moved a large, heavy credenza. It was turned down by 3 charitable organizations that wasted my time by assuring me on the phone it would be removed, but each time their movers rejected it. Brett is careful, professional and pleasant.

Thank you My American Movers and Gerson Sarmiento for an excellent moving. We hired them last month for a local moving(Denver,CO to Denver, CO). They gave us a quite large discount when they knew that its not our first time hiring them for a moving. They really generous and very professional. Excellent as always! From the first moving and to the second. I hope I can see bad things about this people but nope, cant see a slightest mistake and bad things about them. The professionalism was great. The energy and morale of the movers were high. And I never saw them complained on how heavy the thing they're carrying. One of The Best Company indeed!

I have moved many times and Happy Home Moving company is the best I've ever had. The office staff responded immediately to my inqiry about their services. On the day of the move the movers called 30 minutes before arriving just like they said they would. Upon arrival, the crew got straight to work and didn't dilly daddle at all. The movers were very conscientious and wrapped everything requiring extra protection. I will definitely hire these movers for my next move.

I chose Roadrunner because they responded to my request quickly and gave me the confidence they would do the job within budget. On the move day they let me know they were on their way 30 mins prior to their arrival and showed up within the window of time promised. You get a text confirmation the day prior. The move was completed under the estimated time. The movers were courteous, professional, and worked quickly. Jason, the owner, also checked in periodically to ensure the quality of the work being performed. Do not think twice about hiring Roadrunner for your move. They are good people doing good work, and I would hire them again. Thank you.

Just finished our move with this company and besides a few hiccups with miscommunication through (Chris or Alex the dispatchers or owners, not really sure who I was talking to the whole time) we are pretty pleased. First I chatted back and fourth on Yelp about the price quote and he had scheduled me and never told me what time so I had to call and approve the time since he just assumed his chosen time would work with me and never told me what time it was. Then I made it very clear I needed 30 minute notice before the guys show up, since my stuff was in a storage and I would have to have time to meet them there to let them in. Somehow, even though I had called him multiple times from my cell phone he managed to write it down wrong. Therefore I was not informed the movers were coming until they were there and I called the company and they called them to get the correct number. Anyhow we were VERY VERY PLEASED WITH CYLE AND ELIO as our movers, they were FRIENDLY, EFFICIENT and VERY PROFESSIONAL. They moved some very heavy things of ours with a long walking distance to the upstairs apartment and were really great, I just wish we knew we could have used 3 guys to take some of the load off these two and get it done a bit quicker. Lastly, the company did meet us in the middle and started our time 15 minutes later because of the mishap in the beginning, which saved me 30

Amazing work by Ben for a very reasonable rate! I chose Ben because he was the most responsive, professional, and prepared - and it all turned out to be true! It's always nerve wracking to hire movers - you worry about time, the condition your stuff arrives in, the condition your door frame will be left in, etc. - but everything about my move with Global Tree Logisitics Corp was impressively worry free. The quote was no pressure. He was available short notice. He was timely. My stuff was delivered in perfect condition. I plan to use him for all my future moves! Thanks so much!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 9 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
