Introduction: This is the simplest way that I can compare teaching piano/music/voice: It's like teaching a student a 2nd language. As a beginner, looking at music and trying to read it is, essentially, a foreign language. My job is to figure out the level of comprehension my new students are at and grow the understanding of music from there. I start with the basic principle of music and I curtail lessons to fit each student. As we know, each student learns differently. As I come to know each student, I learn how to help interpret the language of music to each individual.
I love teaching. As a natural communicator, I enjoy finding ways to help a student a new musical concept. I especially enjoy seeing the proverbial light bulb come on when music suddenly "clicks". The joy that I see reflected on their face is so fulfilling.
