Matthew and his crew did a great job repairing our retaining wall and driveway/sidewalk. He kept in touch with us consistently to confirm the dates/times his crew would be on site, explained the work clearly, and left behind a tidy jobsite. Highly recommended.

Gustavo and his crew (Edgar and Arman) did a great job of repairing the concrete deck around my pool. They were on-time, clean, and hardworking; not to mention doing a much better job than expected for a very fair price. I would definitely use them again if I had other jobs to do (and I think I will).

Richard helped me design and remodel some features of my home before selling. Richard has a great eye for design and is able to construct as well. Richard and his team poured a new (black) concrete driveway, built me a new lateral cedar stained fence and painted the exterior of my home navy blue. This lead to a quick sale above asking, Thanks!

Excellent experience, would highly recommend. Ruben advised on our diseased/dying shrub in the front and on our backyard. He and his team cut down the shrub to the concrete, resecured our gingko tree and really cleaned up the front, increasing our curb appeal. Then, they cleaned up the back, split and spread out our bamboo, cut down our jasmine and cleaned up the overgrowth. We are very pleased to get this project accomplished through Ruben and feel we got a good value from his bid.

Tui is lovely, kind man. He listened to me, made suggestions and was always open and accepting to changes I had to make . This particular job was especially difficult, full of small details and awkward corners. The cement driveway looks spectacular and people passing by all mention it! Thank you, Tui and also to your lovely son!

We were thoroughly satisfied with the concrete work done by Kris Fredrickson, Anderson Construction’s concrete contractor. Our new driveway and sidewalk look great. Kris listened to us and did his best to accommodate our wishes, going above and beyond. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others. And Mike Anderson stayed in constant communication w/us making sure that we were satisfied with how the project was proceeding.

Angel did an excellent job completing a concrete addition to my driveway. He arrived early and was very professional. His workmanship speaks for itself. Several people passing by observed the quality of work he did and wanted to hire him for work done to their homes. I will be contacting Angel for future projects.

I ended up interviewing 10 different contractors for our exterior siding job because there were so many different opinions on what needed to be done and how best to do it. I'm so glad that we ended up going with Kris and his team. Great communication throughout, incredibly high quality of workmanship on a very difficult job (it is an older house that hasn't been maintained very well before we bought it). I really appreciated Kris' attention to detail and letting us know what was going on throughout the 6 week long process. Also did a great job working with the county inspector, which is never an easy process. These guys are pros - won't hesitate to hire them again for our next house project!

We were really happy to have found Elder through a contact who had hired Micro Resorts for his outdoor space. We already had rough plans for our backyard space, but it was a complicated project involving drainage, concrete work, decking, a hot tub, fencing, and custom firepit, When we met Elder, we liked that Elder was very detail oriented in thinking through the project. It was clear he was really thinking ahead to make sure that all the aspects of the project would come together properly and we weren't overlooking anything. He even brought up how we should really address the lighting, something we weren't even thinking of, and I'm so glad that he did. It made a huge difference to the quality of the final result. Elder really enjoys building positive relationships. This was really helpful in working with the inspector. Elder was sure to address any of the inspectors concerns so that we didn't hit any glitches with the township. We also appreciated that Elder reached out to our neighbors before the start of the project to mitigate any concerns they might have related to the project. We did the project over the winter season, so it took a little longer than we expected because of so many days of rain, but Elder kept the project moving along and we're thrilled with the final result. As a result, we also hired Elder and his team to do our front yard. We honestly feel incredibly lucky every time we enjoy our spaces, and appreciate all the hard work that he and his team put into making this happen.

I wanted to expand my driveway by 100 square feet. I talked to a few contractors and some came out and gave a bid and others blew me off. Mario was different from the rest. He set up an appointment with me for the next day and he showed up on time. He quoted me a price which I eventually accepted. We set a date for him to do the work. He called me and said he could do it a day earlier. I said great. He completed the job in two days and it looks great. His workmanship was very good. He took out 6" of dirt, put in 1-2" of gravel and pour 4-5" of concrete. He matched the expansion joints up with the existing driveway and it looks great. I would heartily recommend Mario. From my experience I would say he is honest, trustworthy with high integrity.

David and his crew did a fine job replacing our old front sidewalk. David is easy to work with, understood immediately what we needed done. I've done minor concrete work myself when I was younger, so I know what is involved, and I was pleased with the efficiency and worksmanship. The only minor glitch was a minor lack of communication about when the last phase of the work would be completed, I would have appreciated an extra phone call or e-mail when David got delayed. Still, I'll be contacting David if we need concrete or landscaping work in the future.

Abraham did a great job on covering two brick chimneys with stucco to match the rest of my house. He also removed and relaid a paver stone walkway that the original landscape contractor did improperly. His price was good as was his workmanship and professionalism. I would use him again and I am comfortable recommending him if you have similar work requirements.

We hired 4-1 Concrete to install our driveway and replace the entire sidewalk in front of our San Francisco home. They were absolutely great to work with and dealt with the picky San Francisco Public Works department all the whole way through. The quality of the work was great! I highly recommend hiring these guys.

Esaiasi "Joe" Piutau and his crew at Abacus Concrete just completed a very detailed job at our home in April 2016. Joe coordinated his crew, concrete delivery, and pumper truck arrival efficiently. They finished the job in three days with beautiful results and no complications. Joe has years of experience as a contractor and concrete quality inspector. We highly recommend Abacus Concrete.

We had an epoxy floor project for our kitchen started by a concrete contractor that did not go well. Statewide came in and fixed the floor in inly five days after we'd spent six weeks trying to get it right with the original contractor. Tyler was responsive, thorough, timely, neat and professional. We would use them again in a heartbeat.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
