Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a massage therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they're taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a massage therapist when social distancing?

Because massage therapy requires person-to-person contact, social distancing is not possible. However, you can ask massage therapists near you if they can offer remote services instead, such as lessons for you and your partner.

If you don’t want to book an appointment with a massage therapist right now, but you will in the future when the pandemic subsides, consider paying your massage therapist in advance or tipping them anyway. You can also ask about buying a gift card for future work.

Do massage therapists offer remote or virtual services?

Ask massage therapists near you about the possibility of remote services. You might come across profiles that state the therapist is offering remote services such as lessons and techniques you can do on your own, with a friend or with a partner.

Does a massage therapist need to enter my home?

Many massage therapists operate their businesses out of their own homes, though some offer mobile massages and come to your home. You should ask the massage therapist where they typically operate and if they are making any special accommodations to better observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing

If you must cancel or delay your massage therapy appointment due to COVID-19, consider asking the therapist if they can offer massage techniques or lessons via video chat, email or some other digital format. You can also ask if it's possible to buy gift cards that can be used at a later time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a massage?

Many massage therapists accept digital payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. Even businesses that do not typically accept digital payments may be changing their methods to practice social distancing. Just check with your massage therapist before the appointment to see how they handle payments.

How can I find out if a massage therapist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential COVID-19 service provider varies from state to state and city to city. To see which businesses are considered essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city.

You can also read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How long is a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage can range from 45 minutes to 120 minutes or more. A longer massage allows the massage therapist to give you an all-over massage and then circle back to focus on areas in need of extra bodywork. Some massage therapists recommend that your first massage be longer to give the therapist time to learn more about your health and any injuries or pain before providing you with a healing massage. The longer your massage, the more it will cost. Swedish massage is made up of five body strokes designed to relax, heal, improve circulation and maintain health. The techniques are called effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. During Swedish massage, all parts of the body are addressed, and the client is often unclothed and draped with a cloth. Swedish massage is proven to be beneficial to mental and physical health, and has been shown by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine to boost the immune system.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

How much does it cost to get a Swedish massage?

Having a Swedish massage can promote relaxation, relieve stress and help you feel great. The national average price range to hire a massage therapist is $70-$90, with prices varying based on length of massage and location. Costs may be higher for a Swedish massage if the client would like services in their home or office, as the massage therapist has to transport their massage table and account for transportation costs. Geographic location can also affect costs, as regions with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business will have lower rates than pricey areas such as San Francisco or New York. Here are some examples of average Swedish massage costs:

  • $50 for a 60-minute massage in North Texas.
  • $55 for a 60-minute massage in Central Texas.
  • $60 for a 60-minute massage in New Jersey.
  • $100 for a 60-minute massage in San Francisco Bay Area.

I was looking for a massage therapist in the East Bay and luckily found Jose. He was really helpful and flexible in making sure that my partner and I could have a great couples massage. I originally planned for a Swedish massage but he noticed I would benefit from a deep tissue massage more and transitioned to that in the middle. Would definitely recommend checking out Jose!

We love Kate! My younger son was in town last week and he had a massage done by Kate. He enjoyed it so much, that my older son who came to town too, my husband, and my younger son all had a massage by Kate yesterday. The 3 of them in one day! My turn is Next! They think that she gave one of the best massages they've ever had! Highly recommend her.

There does appear to be a language barrier unfortunately. Got the 90 minute massage for my wife. Specifically asked for essential oils, and just barely any were used (just brought over lavender and almost didn't use it). My wife said she specifically during the massage was saying her lower back was hurting and to concentrate on that, however that never happened and just an overall body massage was done (which my wife said was good! Just not concentrated on the specific pain points unfortunately).

This was a shot in the dark - hiring a massage therapist via thumbtack. But Glenn was fantastic. He asked great questions to know more about the reason of my back issues. He was also very knowledgeable and explained everything he did. The actual back massage therapy was very helpful and I could feel a difference right away. Very punctual, professional and easy to work with. Highly recommended.

Lawrence was an absolute professional and extremely skilled in massage therapy. I hired him to come to my sister-in-law's house in Pleasanton the night prior to her wedding. Myself, the maid of honor, and the bride got 1 hour massages. We all thought he was AMAZING and were super impressed with his skill. I get massages very often and have experienced different styles and levels of expertise and Lawrence was one of the best. We will definitely book him again. He was very punctual and we were the ones who were a few minutes (about 10) late getting back to the house from running errands and he was not upset at all and was very understanding. HIGHLY recommend!

I booked a birthday massage for my wife & ended up getting one as well. Carly took care of us & we'll definitely call on her again. Be advised, her caller ID is under a different name than her business & personal names (to avoid confusion).

Amy was very respectful in answering in a timely manner, on time to the appointment, had a great price, traveled to my location, met my husbands needs in the massage and followed all safety protocols for cleanliness to help prevent the spread of Covid19. 10++ and 5 star rating given to Amy!!!!

What can I say except that when I saw Glenn’s reviews and credentials that I KNEW he was the right therapist for our situation. The pain my father was experiencing was to the point that he couldn’t take it anymore. I contacted Glenn on a Saturday night and 3 days later my fathers pain had decreased by 50%! Glenn took the care and time to listen to my fathers history and his everyday life to really give him the relief that has been much needed for YEARS. Don’t hesitate, Glenn’s approach to massage / Reiki, and General overall well being is GREAT.
