I am very happy with the care and cleaning by Charles and his team Air Duct Professionals. Apparently dryers should be cleaned every year (and Charles says you can use a leaf blower in the disconnected dryer entry one year and alternate with the pro your second year). Heating cooling ductwork should be cleaned every 5-7 years. I didn't know that, but can see how this makes sense. My ducts were filthy, as I had never had them cleaned, and after 14 years I was prompted when my dryer lost its efficiency. Charles and his team did fine work. They arrived on time, cleaned up during and after, including cleaning vent covers and floor sweeping any escaped debris (like old paint chipped overspray from the builder). The job took over 3.5 hours on my two system, 20 vent household. Charles was very knowledgable, inspected the job and then took the extra effort of going into the attic to check the condition of the ducts themselves. He pointed out that skipping this step could make the whole cleaning process a waste of time. He found a couple of holes made the repairs at no charge. He also did extra work with the attic for me--observing it needed cleanup, including removing a dead bird, which prompted me to give him a hefty tip. Meanwhile the team sealed the vents and vacuumed/cleaned them thoroughly. The dryer vents out of my roof, and I hadn't realized the end cap (deflecto) had blown off and was missing. It left an opening in the roof for the bird to get into my attic and also was the reason my dryed vent was clogged-- with a second big fat (dead) bird that had flown down the tube, which Charles desposed of. Charles has a background in fire restoration/cleanup, and this knowledge showed in his work. He also pointed out that when I run the dryer I must turn on the fan and shut the laundry room door to keep lint from escaping into my house. He also recommended I start using a better filter than my current (which the company does not sell), the 3M Filtrete. He also replaced the dryer/wall connector as mine had screw holes for lint to escape. He showed me how much lint had collected around the holes, some of which went airborn. So not only did Charles, Jasmine and Jevan do great work, I also learned from this experience. The Deflecto replacement required someone with a long ladder to tackle the job. I hired a second company who also cleans ducts (they didn't bring their long ladder, though I had explained what the job needed). They came, and they inspected Charles' work because they said some air duct cleaners don't really do a good job, that the ducts still might need cleaning, but after inspecting there was no need for any more work. So I would say the second company gave (tacit) good reviews to Charles' team as well.

Working with Sam was one of the best contractor experiences that I have ever had. He was respectful, honest and took the time to explain everything as it was being done. Instead of installing a new air conditioner at a significant cost , as was suggested by another contractor, I paid a reasonable fee to have mine tested, overhauled and am enjoying COOL air....aaaah. Thanks Sam!

My husband and I had a leaking main pipe. We had three companies come out, one of them being Aire Rite. David came out for the estimate, which was free. He was awesome. He explained everything clearly, he was easy to talk to and he seemed like someone that we could work with. His bid was $1000 dollars less than the lowest of the other two bids! We hired David. Him and his brother, Tommy, who was also just as cool, came out and they replaced our main pipe. They did the work in one day and everything went great. The company offered the option of financing, so that was a plus. They also stayed a few extra minutes while we asked them a bunch of questions about other plumbing, heating and air things. That was great considering they probably wanted to go home and clean up! I would definitely recommend them and we will be calling them for other jobs we need done in the future. Thanks guys!

Wouldn't you know it, my A/C unit went out over a very hot Labor Day week-end while we had company visiting from out of state, UGH! The guy I usually called for such issues wasn't available till Thursday. I put out a repair request on Thumbtack and JC came to our rescue within a couple of hours. Jose was a real professional. He immediately discovered the problem, which was a bad blower motor. He was able to replace the motor and had my AC running again in no time. What a relief! Jose was prompt, friendly knowledgeable and reasonably priced. I would definitely call him agan for my heating and air conditioning needs.

I used this company to fix my air conditioning. I would turn the AC on and it would blow out air but there was not very cool and it was not cooling down my house. the technician sid determined that my ac had not been cleaned for a long time. he did a simple cleaning of the filters and put more freon in the unit.the AC was back to being very cold and the price was low. I appreciate his honesty because before when I had an issue a technician I hired tried to tell me that I needed a new unit and wanted to charge me to install a new unit. I highly recommend this company.

When my air conditioning system stopped working, I feared that a technician would tell me that it couldn't be fixed because it was too old. But I called Laith Frangoul of Honesty Cooling & Heating and much to my delight he really was exactly what his company name touts - HONEST! He arrived very quickly, found a bad condenser, had it in his vehicle and we were up and running in minutes at a very fair price! I was so thrilled that I hired him to do some preventative maintenance. He uses top notch modern equipment and he is obviously very knowledgeable. I own a commercial building and I plan to use him when we have HVAC issues. I am thrilled to have found Honesty Cooling & Heating and I highly recommend his services. The HVAC service industry is loaded with crooks and thankfully he is the exception!

Ken Shipman from Perfect Climate and his staff were amazing throughout my project. The professional approach to our specific needs are beyond mention. We are extremely happy with our new Trane system and couldn't be happier with the amount of air we are now experiencing on our second story portion of our home. I highly recommend Perfect Climate to anyone seeking a new Air conditioning system.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
