Angelika came over to better our view in our backyard. We had this horrendous black metal fence that my husband was having nightmares about until he found Angelika. He had this idea of painting the best sceneries of our home country, Lebanon. We are from a village in the north by the name of Douma. She did the sceneries justice!!!! They came out gorgeous she painted our home town Douma the cedars of Lebanon in snow and our home on Douma. It couldn't have been anymore beautiful. The views are now amazing and every morning while drinking coffee we can remember our home town and remember the days spent there! Thank you so much Angelika I didn't think it could be done but the Sawaya family thanks you tremendously for the gorgeous art!

Mark is fantastic. He did several jobs at our home in Redlands, and completed them very efficiently. All work was done to the highest standards, and very quickly. Everything from start to finish in each job went exactly as planned and Mark conducts himself like a true professional. Coming from a family of contractors, I can genuinely say that Coastal Handyman Connection is the real deal. Fantastic work at a very reasonable price!

My husband and I recently moved into our house in Torrance, CA.. We hired Debby and her company Creative Spaces Interior Design, Inc. to help us make it a home. She got a feel for our likes and dislikes almost immediately. She has a great insight in planning and design. She valued our thoughts and ideas and closely worked with them. She used and incorporated existing furniture, pictures and family heirlooms that were very important to us. She knows how to combine old styles with new modern styles to achieve the perfect desired effect for that "wow" factor that we were looking for. She is very detailed oriented and quite the perfectionist. She turned our home into something we are extremely proud of. It is warm, comfortable and inviting. We would highly recommend Debby to all of our family and friends and would definitely have her come again for future planning and decorating. Debby was a real pleasure to work with, you will not be disappointed.

The stress I was feeling about moving out of my Hollywood home was overwhelming. I needed someone that was going to hold my hand through the process. After shopping around for the best deal, this was it for me. Having people come into my home is very personal and I also needed confidentiality. Kay and her team were very friendly and accommodating to my needs. Everything ran smoothly and they earned my trust. All my personal belongings were in good hands and it was not stressful at all. When I moved into my new home, they were there to help me unpack and decorate. It was fun working with the same team throughout the entire process. My new home is great thanks to Kay!

I highly recommend Romero + Obeji Interior Design. My husband and I decided a few months ago that we were ready, after 15 years and raising 3 kids in this house, to finally decorate our home the way we wanted. We realized that we had no idea where to start and we were afraid of making costly mistakes so I posted on Thumbtack that we were looking for an interior designer. I received many replies, but is was only Romero + Obeji Interior Design whose website I visited time an again and then who I ultimately contacted and hired. We are so happy that we found Romero + Obeji Interior Design. Hector and Chris spent a considerable amount of time with our family learning not only our decorating tastes, but also getting to know who we all are and how we hoped to use our space. They then successfully transformed our house, that was previously terribly dated and full of awkward and unused spaces, into a home that is current (yet timeless), welcoming and flows seamlessly from room to room. They found high quality painters and helped us select beautiful paint for our walls and cabinets that brightened every inch of our home; they sourced a beautiful counter top and back splash material that easily updated our kitchen; they designed our living spaces so that each room became a usable space; and then they furnished the home with a mix of new pieces (that you will not find in any furniture showroom or your neighbor's house) and some of our existing pieces to create a home that is beautiful and truly reflects our family and our tastes. We love our "new" home, but if the time comes for us to move on from here we would not hesitate to hire Romero + Obeji again.

Yes, some would think that one wood blind is the same as any wood blind. I regretfully found out that this is not true. I thought I would save time and just purchase the builders window blinds package that was offered when I was selecting the options for my new home. Well, after only six months of living in my home the wood blinds started to warp and crack. They made my brand new home look terrible. It was a terrible investment. I found Made in the Shade Blinds & More and they were able to schedule an appointment with me the following day. They came and educated me on the fact that all wood blinds are not alike and I just wasted a lot of money. They were able to show me wood blinds samples, explain and show me the difference between the wood blinds they offer and the ones installed in my house. All of the window treatments they offer come with a limited life-time warranty. The kicker is - I paid just a little bit more than I did when I purchased the builder package. Made in the Shade Blinds & More is an excellent company and I highly highly recommend them.

Dar was the best thing that happened to us. Selling a house is a very stressful experience but Dar was a real bright spot. He staged our home beautifully and went above and beyond staging to give us helpful advice. During showings it was common to hear prospective buyers comment on how beautiful our home looked. A couple of them even asked if they could have the furniture. He is a great guy with a lot of talent who does an outstanding job for a very fair price! And he genuinely cared. Highly recommend!!!!

We had a great experience working with Sandi! Our outdated family room and eating area needed some change, but we didn't know where to start. Sandi was able to transform the room into a modern space that's become our favorite place in the house! She was easy to work with and after the initial design consultation provided suggestions for specific items we wanted to purchase and created mood boards and 3D pictures so we could see what the room would look like. She has a great eye for design and provided advice on color selection, decor items, and furniture placement while making sure the room was family-friendly and would grow with us through the years. Sandi is warm, thoughtful, professional and makes the design and remodel process smooth and enjoyable. She was considerate of our budget, schedule and was easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend Sandi Kaneko Interiors!

I could not be more delighted to describe my experience with Sound of Home. I hired Victoria to update a small guest cottage in order to rent it out on Airbnb. The budget was tight and the place had not been tended to in many years. Victoria got right to work and turned the place into a bright and beautiful zen studio in less than 10 days! This included replacing the floors, rearranging the furniture, new bed/bedding, mounting the TV to the wall, relocating light fixtures and staging the decor. She even contributed a beautiful seascape that she painted herself! In addition, she brings a lot of experience working with Airbnb and her advice on exactly what guests are looking for was invaluable. I had multiple rentals right away! Not only is Victoria very responsive, thorough and extremely budget-conscious, she is also a lovely person and absolute pleasure to work with. I immediately hired her at the end of this project to help me with my personal home! I simply can't recommend her enough. Thank you Victoria!!!

I recently bought an old, run-down Spanish house that I had to redo from scratch and Chloe has made it look amazing! I first decided I needed a designer when my painter asked what colors to use on the walls and I realized I had no clue what to do. I hired Chloe and she helped me choose beautiful colors that I would’ve never even thought of. Now she’s helping me furnish and decorate the house. She’s worked with my often difficult taste in furniture and rugs and she’s created a great space that I’m really loving. For budgetary reasons, I had to keep some of my old apartment furniture and she even figured out a way to mix that in with new stuff and make it look good. I can’t recommend her highly enough!

Devlyn is absolutely amazing!! I first met her when she did an in home consult helping me choose paint colors for my new condo. She is very patient and attentive to achieve your desired look. It turned out great and was exactky what I was looking for! She slowly edged me out of my comfort zone by showing me how to mix the dark colors I love with other brighter colors and still get my desired look. I actually look for bright colors now! Devlyn has remained a very dear E-friend since that time even by chance finding my new first home!! Devlyn is beyond outstanding! I would recommend her without any reservation.

After a $10,000 price decrease on the sales price of my house, I was contacted by Legacy Designs to help me sale my house by staging my home. At first I was very reluctant, but Tina didn't pressure me at all, She just explained how staged homes sell faster than un-staged homes. I will put it this way - the cost to stage my home cost way less than the $10,000 price drop that I had to take before I staged my house. Three days after staging my home, my agent had an open house and I received 4 offers and was able to sale my house!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
