Chris was extremely punctual, professional, came to my house and checked my air conditioning and heating system to replace my old thermostat for a new one (eco bee 3), my system probably is from the 50s and he showed me everything and which ones the options I have to be able to make a great installation, the price of it is very fair and without doubt I made a great choice. I have a cleaning company and I will certainly recommend it to all my customers!

I was in the market for a new heating and air conditioning system. I had four companies come out, and these guys blew the competition out of the water. It was funny, I thought I wanted a more expensive system, and the gentleman who came out actually talked me out of spending more money because the return on my investment was not there. Who else does that? They say that like to treat everyone like family, and that is how I felt. The experience was a lot of fun too. The original phone call, service man, and Installers were absolutely great. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could.

What can I say about Tony and Joe!! I have never had such a pleasant experience as I did for an issue like this - air conditioner repair. I live in Tracy, CA and the summer heat is upon us with my unit blowing out hot air. You cannot imagine my discomfort unless you experienced this as well. However, Tony has spent several days with the issue at my home, and never once did he tire of my many text messages, and calls. He was very professional and personable which is important as well. From the moment I opened my door, I sensed he cared about the people he was working for as well as his job. What a work ethic!! People are so busy these days forgetting to smile, laugh and make you feel at ease, but not Tony. Is it important that the people you trust to come into your home to fix something as important as your a/c when you live in the valley to be skilled? Yes, but it's equally important that they help you be comfortable with them upon that first introduction and that's what Tony did for me. He has a dynamic personality that just made what he did and how he did it that much more. I look for that great customer service just as much as I look for the person to be knowledgeable. He is being rated with 5 stars because there were not 10 stars to select. My issue has been resolved quickly, and without feeling I didn't get what I paid for. I completely appreciate his knowledge and expertise and relentless work ethic to complete a job thoroughly despite the set backs of an old unit and 90 degree temps outside, and to the complete satisfaction of his customer. Tony has become a part of my family and you'll feel the same way too. If you are deciding which direction to go for your air conditioning needs, let me assure you that Tony is the right first step. I appreciate the work done, but have also made a friend for life and that's rare. Awesome, 5 star work.. Highly recommend him. The only thing Tony could do better is duplicate himself..I had the best night sleep last night because of his diligence to get my unit repaired, which was a total saving and complete blessing. 5 stars to you Mr. Dooley!!! Karen, Sheila and Kaliyah!!!

We had upgraded windows installed and a new, more efficient, air conditioning system. The windows are beautiful and the installation was clean and professionally done. We are very impressed with the new heating and cooling system, it's ease of operation, it's efficiency, and the energy we hope to save. The installation of these components were also professionally done, the workmanship was superb.

Atlas is a reliable company. Tony inspected my old air conditioning system and gave me a detailed explanation of the problems with different options and he also described pros and cons of each option and what will probably happen in future. You feel very comfortable when you know a professional is working with you. Tony even called and came by to visit the installed system to make sure it is ok. I am happy I chose Atlas.

We had several Hvac companies out to give us a quotesit was stressful and confusing with most companies saying I need a new system but not looking at the old system .Brian and his crew looked at the old air conditioner and heater and gave me the option to fix or get a new system, Brian was genuine and honest and we decided to get a new system, which was promptly installed, we are very happy with our new system and the fantastic service provided by Brian and crew!

First I must say that the one star review from the person stating Vitaliy did not complete the job correctly is not a fair representation of how he conducts business. After scheduling the install of a 2 ton split ac Vitaliy arrived promptly at the time he stated, handles himself in a very professional manner and took great care to ensure he kept our home clean. As for the installation he did a very good job, everything looks like it was done by a pro which I believe speaks to his ability to preform jobs in a professional manner. I will gladly work with Vitaliy in the future for any HVAV needs I may have and I will recommend his services to friends in the future.

I am so pleased with A&P Heating & Cooling company for what did for me : First , they inspected my old Air Conditioning -Heating unit , which was not working at all, and showed that the' fire-wall " was completely shut , and it was so dangerous and fire hazard even to attempt to turn it on . I was very convinced of this fact . They installed a new unit (TRANE ) ,that is working so flawlessly and so efficiently. Their personnel are superbly professional , superbly knowledgeable , and so friendly , so trustworthy . They also use top quality materials in the installations . They follow up their work , making sure that the needs of the customer are met well. I would recommend this company to anyone wholeheartedly .

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
