Sheila and her crew showed up on short notice to clean a house that I was vacating. They did an excellent job. Refrigerator, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room, all nice and clean and ready for the next renter to move in. I was in a pinch because the house I was moving into was disgusting, so my focus was on getting that house ready to move into. Sheila, thanks for a great job, and letting me concentrate on my move in house. I trust her and her crew so much that I hired her to come to my new house to do my windows and cupboards.

Mike was hired to change part of the siding of my house and fix some dry rot around my house. He was so good and honest and told me that the siding was all rotten and the whole wall needed to be replaced. He did a great job. I'm so pleased with his work that he's going to change a couple of window at my house! Thanks Mike for doing a great job and to be honest! Integrity and honesty are number one on my list! Thank you Deborah

This company epitomizes what it means to be an exceptional small-business contractor. We had them do a deck repair that ended being an 11 on a 1-10. Here's why: First, Steve and his team outlined specifically what needed to be done, presented a fair and reasonable cost, and (very important), were on time! Secondly, Carruth went over and above during the job. Often, it's the little things that make a difference, and this was certainly the case with Carruth Home Solutions. The caring and personal touch they did on each aspect of this job is something you're not going to find with the average contractor. Steve, his son Judah and the entire Carruth family had a hand in completing our job. Thanks, team, for an A+ effort. Friends, no job is too small or large for this company!

This is the second time I received absolutely the best services from this company. They fit into all 5 positive ratings with 10 stars, hands down. I highly recommend Screen Tech as your go to company for window services. They responded to my request for services last night and in less than 12 hours the job was done.

We hired Isaac to paint our huge living room, family room, kitchen and second floor hallway for our home remodeling project. He gave us a very reasonable quote within the hour. We also had a couple of requests to paint other additional items and Isaac super flexible. He was on top of the work and communicated changes with us right away, very professional the whole time, no surprises. His team worked very hard under super-hot weather to complete the project on time as promised. We are so impressed with the details on the windows, ceilings and floor edges. Our home looks amazing like a model home now and we love it. This was our first experience hiring a pro via Thumbtack.com and everything went very smoothly. It was such a pleasure working with Isaac. Absolutely worth every penny for this 5 star quality work. We will definitely recommend him to family and friends!

Todd and his mentor repaired a 7'x9' multi-paned window from the 1930s that is the nicest most noticeable feature on my home from the street. It was dry rotted so badly that there was a hole big enough for mice to come through. Todd took the window to his mentor's woodshop and together they rebuilt the window with beautiful joinery, removing all the weak rotted parts and replacing with new wood. He then reinstalled the window and used Bondo to completely rebuild the sill (which was also largely dry rotted). The repair is solid and beautifully done. He also was super pleasant to have around, professional in every way, cleaned up every time after his work, and I'm 100% happy. It's way preferable to me to rebuild a beautiful old window rather than buy a new one. He did so affordably (about 1/4 the cost if I had had to buy a brand new window). Thanks, Todd! I totally recommend him to anyone needing this kind of work.

I had asked Rich to come in and clean all my windows and baseboards. Not only did they clean the baseboards, but they also cleaned all my doors in my house including my front door which I was not expecting and was very happy about! I am very happy about the quality of work that Rich and his team provided , not to mention this was very affordable to me! Thank you for your hard work and thoroughness, I will definitely be contacting you in the future.

This was a whole house clean in preparation of an open house weekend. Amber did a very good job throughout and was helpful with additional suggestions on a problem window with water spots. She provided her own supplies, was thorough and very pleasant. Great job and I would use her again.

Gennadiy installed siding for me outside a remodeled bathroom. I had the old fashioned redwood materials custom ordered from a mill, but installing them was a somewhat complex job that I didn't feel comfortable tackling. Gennadiy installed all the materials perfectly, including the window and corner trim pieces. Everything was installed straight and tight, with primer on both sides, so I think this job is going to last many decades. Thanks for the great work, Gennadiy!

Nate was very courteous, efficient and reliable. I asked several carpenters to give me an estimate for replacing trim around the outside of my house windows and they said they would, but didn't show. Nate showed when he said he would and gave me pricing right away. He started and finished the job giving me constant updates including pictures. I am glad to have found someone so knowledgeable and will continue to use him for things at my properties.

John and Sarah are great and genuine individuals. Out of all the contractors we looked at John had the best design options. They built an eye lid over our side door., pergola in the the front of the house to get the front depth, trim around the windows and even shutters. Their attention to details was excellent and they really wanted to do a great job. Which they did. John even keep checking in with us to make sure we liked what he was doing. HIRE THEM! I will again!

Josh of Pacific Pride Windows, knows his windows and knows what customer service is about. I had Josh come to my home to give me answers to my questions about his windows. After his visit, he had me sold. I purchased the windows and i couldn't believe the different it made from my old windows. I now have more privacy looking thru my windows from the outside into my home and they make my home more quiet as they filter out noise from the street traffic. I do recommend the windows to all who are considering replacing there windows.

USA Replacement Auto Glass went above and beyond. The day I contacted them they were out to measure and give me an exact quote. I had them rush it and had my window replaced in 48 hrs. I will be using them for all of my glass needs. I scheduled their shop to replace a windshield on my new Audi A4 and were three hundred dollars cheaper then Safelite. They are family owned and although I hope to not have more glass issues they will have my business and all of my family and friends. Thank you USA

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
