Earlier this month, MGB Relocations helped with a 350 mile move that required an overnight stay. Mario and his team were very professional and very helpful. He worked with us on and our budget to accommodate our needs. His team brought all the materials needed to disassemble and reassemble furniture as needed, plus covers to protect the mattresses. We had not finished packing when his team arrived (our fault as they were on time) and they were able to plastic wrap some bookshelves with items still in it to make the move even easier. Mario said that his job is to make our move easy and he was true to his word. We appreciate MGB Relocations for helping to make a stressful event go smoothly. I recommend them for any move, whether long distance or local.

They were professional, respectful, accommodating and courteous. They were very aware of the time and my budget and managed it well. There were no hidden charges or extra fees. I had heavy items that had to be moved to an upstairs apartment, navigating narrow entryways and it went off without a hitch or ding :) I would definitely recommend this company and would use them again.

And by 11:30 AM - 20 years of junk - boxes - debris - file cabinets ...U name it GONE! And, the best part! They cleaned the garage and it sparkles now! WOW! Will recommend and will tell my Real Estate office - Keller Williams about them! Highly recommend :) Jeri

You know how everyone "hates moving companies?" You won't hate this one. From the moment I requested a quote to the second they shook my hand as they left my new house, 5 Star was above board, honest, and totally professional. I gave them my budget and they worked within it, and my stuff arrived in excellent condition. Will definitely use them again and tell everyone I know how great they are!

Barry and his team of guys were amazing! My fiancé and I moved into a new house and we weren’t 100% sure about how we wanted the furniture arranged. These guys were totally happy to shift things around for us here and there until we were totally happy. Really amazing considering all the heavy lifting and hard work. I would most definitely use Flash moving again and will reconmend then to anyone I know who’s in the process of moving. Thanks again guys!

We had such a great experience! My husband and I did a long distance move from Los Angeles to Portland for law school. I was pretty nervous about which movers to go with — you are entrusting your entire life’s belongings with them so did extensive research on every option from large moving companies to PODS to UHauls. We were also pretty budget conscious so were shocked at the prices we kept getting back. But when I got the quote from I Need To Be Moved I was excited but honestly a little skeptical because of the affordability compared to everyone else. Plus I’ve dealt with so many scammers online I really wanted to do my due diligence. Their front office was incredibly kind and patient, answering all our questions, providing referrals and video testimonials that made us confident enough to move forward. The moving team was so professional. They clearly take their job very seriously and treated our belongings with the utmost care. The team even drove hours out of their way en route to Portland so as to avoid the wildfires (which we hadn’t even thought to ask about). I couldn’t recommend this company more. I know moving is a really high stress experience but I Need To Be Moved made the transition painless.

I was in desperate straits in a need to move all the furnishings of one duplex (that would be two fully furnished units) - into to a larger back unit in very short order. I was recommended to PTM Movers here in Los Angeles by a friend. I spoke at length with the proprietor, David L., and it became readily apparent to me that by the end of our conversation that David of PTM Movers - highly valued the reputation of his company and they services offered. At that point I decided to take the gamble, particularly given the fact that I had delicate furniture items that were at once weighty, unwieldy, and required kid gloves in order to get them from point A to B. Within the short request time of 24 hours, PTM Movers sent his team; T&T Moving Co., and I can only attest that in my days of moving, I have never been more content. I've got to say that Tim and his crew don't bump and grind and clobber. They glide effortlessly and follow a very structured efficiency hierarchy established by Tim himself. Although it may not be obvious to the naked eye of the nervous home-owner or renter who values their possessions, there is skill to moving, and the distinction between experienced and not becomes quickly obvious. And Tim and his fellas come very, very prepared and take every precaution. You practically have to implore them to rest for a few moments and rehydrate - that's how devoted to do a great job they are. You want your moving job done properly by a company that understands and respects the power of "word of mouth" and stakes their reputation on it, then I highly endorse PTM Movers of Los Angeles.

I was just looking for a local company for a relatively small move, we moved from a 3 bedroom condo to a house. From my previous experience, I did not want to call the big national guys, they are too proud of themselves and charge big bucks. I was trying to stay under $900 budget. I called 4 companies. When I talked to Chris at Safe N Fast Movers, I knew, these are the guys I am going with. Chris was straight to the point, he asked me questions regarding the items being moved and gave me the rates. He also e-mailed me the quote right after we spoke. The rest went very smooth too. The crew of 3 men arrived on time at 8:00am and Ed went over the moving agreement with me, all as we discussed, no surprises. They worked at a good pace and what we really liked that they wrapped all the furniture nicely, so no scuffed and scraped corners, everything arrived beautifully at the new house. They even put together the beds, woohoo!!! And by the way, I was still under my budget so I gave them good tips. So if you are in South OC and looking for movers call Safe N Fast

How do you avoid stress when you’re moving... Hire GLOBAL TREE LOGISTICS CORP! From the moment they responded to my inquiry, to the time they unloaded the last box, everything was super easy and simply...simple. I don’t know how Benjamin and his crew are able to have such great attitudes and work so professionally... in 100+ degrees weather... AND having me, a total stress-ball, as a client. Thanks to Benjamin and Global Tree, our move was effortless. Nothing was damaged, everything was protected wonderfully, and they were nothing less than respectful... not to mention extremely reasonably priced! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
