Bruce saved the day! He responded quickly to our water heater problem. Within hours of contacting him, the job was done! We appreciated that he was punctual, reliable, worked efficiently, clean, and very knowledgeable. He took time to explain and show us how and why our water heater has failed. He even caught a potential problem that if not tended to, may cause flooding in the house. Overall, we are very satisfied and we highly recommend Bruce!

All In One Plumbing & Drains, Inc. removed and disposed of our old water heater at a $35 charge, they got the permit for us at a $50 charge plus the cost of the permit at City Hall, they picked up and transported the new water heater from Orchard Hardware, around 2 miles at a $35 charge and installed the water heater in around 4 1/2 hours and it passed inspection by the City the next day. Cesar and his apprentice were very courteous and friendly and did a good job and the only complaint I have about their service is the final price. The Thumbtack.com price they advertised online was $225 but the final price turned out to be $700, over 3 times what they advertised. I would have left off one more star in the rating but they are still cheaper than Sears and the other licensed contractors that quoted us prices on Thumbtack. A couple of the handymen on Thumbtack quoted less of a price but there's no guarantee with someone that's not a licensed and bonded contractor. I don't know what these quotes on Thumbtack are based on and I forgot to ask them about it but these people need to be more honest about their final estimates since $225 plus $120 plus the permit price of $47 doesn't equal $700 dollars.

Honest technician for honest customers!!!. Carlos goes with this tagline 100%. I hired Carlos for installing Fleck SXT 5600 water softener system. He did an amazing job, very courteous, knowledgeable and affordable. He has clarified all the questions I have asked patiently. We are very happy with the water softener that he has provided and the installation as well. I’d highly recommend him if anyone is considering for water softeners or for installation.

Isidrio is the BEST plumber (and tech) I've worked with. He was very professional, prompt, clean, and offered a very fair price. I've used him to install my water heater, fix a bathroom faucet leak, and he just remodeled by bathroom. It's hard to find people who are not just good at their job but who are also honest. I would recommend Isidrio for any job.

Efrain completed hauling and replacing my 50 Gal Gas Water Heater. He was on time for the appt and completed the work on the same day I called. Cost was very reasonable and was the going rate for such work based on my reviews. He is very clean on his work and checked thoughly for water and gas leaks before leaving the job. He gave me a written invoice and documented the 8 yr warranty for parts and labor. I am completely satisfied with his work and will recommend him to my family.

Our 20 year old water heater was starting to leak, so I figured it was time to replace it, and put the job on Thumbtack. Rudy made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He was very good with updating me about when he was going to arrive. We met at a Home Depot near my house to pick up the water heater, and the installation went smoothly. He gave me a list of recommendations - things that he wasn't able to do himself, so it wasn't just to get more business for himself.

I called another plumber with a lot of good ratings and they told me they were busy. Would we like to make an appointment for tomorrow? It was only 3pm and we had a hissing leak under the house. Still the best I could get was, let me tell you how to shut the water off and we can be there tomorrow around 10am. So we called Prudential plumbing. Prudential said they would be there as soon as they could, probably by 5pm. Mark from Prudential arrived about 4pm, nice surprise and he went right to the leak. There wasn’t going to be a quick fix because he said he had to torch the pipe and the low spot meant he had to drain the water. After some procedures to remove the water he went under the house and replaced the pipe. Then he went back under again to sanitize the area. When he finished our water was back and our toilets worked again! I complimented Mark about the repair and asked how he arrived so quickly after I called. He said he was about a mile away with another customer and our emergency needed service. He still had more work there the next day. We offered Mark a tip but he said he wouldn’t take it this time. He said it was enough that we decided to live so close to his other customer. Our bill wasn’t the lowest I’ve seen but Prudential’s service was maybe the best and they were fast with a response. I think its very true what Prudential says on their web site.

Jesus was timely and good about following up. The best thing was that Jesus gave me 3 different treatment options for my water heater situation. He offered to do the lowest priced treatment; and if it didn't work, give me credit towards the more expensive option. The first treatment worked, saving me about $2,000.

World's most inconvenient plumbing problems - no hot water! Jesus responded promptly and came right over. We made a plan for him to come on Sunday - Father's Day - and install a new water heater. He was on time, thorough, cleaned everything up and charged a very fair price. I will definitely recommend J Jesus Aguilera Plumbing to friends and will use him for my next job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
