Initially I was skeptical based on past history of one shady tax preparer. However, Jimmy quickly instilled confidence. Very articulate, knowledgable - quick to hop on phone for clarity and managed to cover the cost of consultation with a nice refund. Looking forward to working with Jimmy in the future on amended returns. Thanks Jimmy for the excellent service.

Had a really great consultation with Richard. He was very attentive and did not hesitate to print documents for us to discuss and talk about together. Due to other circumstances I hired an accountant connected to a lawyer of mine. Thanks though Richard.

We were looking at moving up to the QuickBooks Enterprise software from QuickBooks Pro and we had several questions before we decided to upgrade. QbCure helped answer and transfer the data over to the new company file successfully. We ended up having other issues with our accounting department so we outsourced the accounting functions to QbCure and they have done an incredible job for us. Ryan S.

I actually feel weird about saying that working with an accountant was actually a very pleasant experience. I feel so much more knowledgeable in dealing with the IRS after our in-depth conversation and the advice Hwesu gave me. I love the feeling of having someone so well versed in taxes and business on my side and I plan on working with Cobb-Phillips & Associates for many years to come.

Accountant was not clear of his explanations or his intention. We had a difficult time with communication because of the language differences. He spoke very broken English with a heavy accent. (it was hard for me to understand him). He told me the consultation was free, that is the only reason I was willing to take the meeting. He did not tell me when the consultation changed for being a consult to actual working for me. I never asked him to review my 2017 tax returns, he said he needed to see them to get a clearer idea of what I needed. I received an unexpected bill.

Kamal Verma has been our tax accountant since 2005. We always recommend her company to our friends, family and associates. Her fees are reasonable and she always does her best to save us money. We own a small internet retail business and have been struggling with a very low profit margin, especially since the economic downturn in 2008. Recently, with escalating energy prices, our product costs sky-rocketed by over 25%. Kamal, as a valued consultant, diligently strives to help us through these hard times, by suggesting strategies and making certain we are monitoring our cash flow correctly. In short, Kamal has essentially become a valued "business partner" and a dear friend.

Thank you for your help in my IRS audit regarding payroll taxes for my company. You revised my corporate and individual taxes for the last 3 years and ended up with a big outlay of cash for both my personal and corporate tax returns. You saved me from a lot of penalties and interest charges, as well as bringing me through my personal audit of which I got a refund when it was completed. I have known you for 3 years and my biggest regret is not knowing you 10 years sooner. I would have saved a lot of money wasted in taxes over the years.

Honestly when I started looking for a bookkeeper I was only about 75% sure I even wanted or needed one. Oliver Smith was recommended through Thumbtack and after about five minutes talking to him on the phone I was nearly sold on the idea. He suggested a quick in-person meetup to dispel any initial hesitation and to get a feel for who I was hiring to look after my finances. I quickly hired him on the spot and have been employing his services ever since. He is very knowledgeable with Quickbooks and was able to quickly and thoroughly catch my books up to where they needed to be after months of me trying to do them on my own. He is quick to answer any and all questions I send his way and explains what he is doing and makes suggestions accordingly, which he always leaves up to me for final decision making. I highly recommend Oliver to any one who needs someone to look after their books and give them the attention they deserve.

I found out from my bank that the IRS had levied more than $4500 from my bank account for taxes that I was due. I work at a medium sized company with no other source of income and believed that my taxes were being deducted by the employer from the salary. Turned out that they weren’t and I owed the government an additional $10,000 in taxes for the last three years. The IRS also had an order of wage garnishment on my salary which would have created real financial problems for me and my family. The Legacy Tax Resolution was recommended to me by a co-worker who had been through a similar situation before. They collected the complete record of my salary slips and negotiated an installment plan with the IRS. The payments would be made over a period of one year, which was inconvenient but manageable.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

    Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

    What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

    • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
    • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
    • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
    • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
