I needed a couple of very small things done in my bathrooms (caulking mostly). Our appointment was set for 2:30-3:30. I received a message at 2PM that another job had an emergency so they wouldn't be able to get to my place until evening or the next day. I explained that I had a kind of hard deadline due to an inspection I had coming up the next morning and he worked it out so he was able to come over and take care of my project around 3:30, so not so late after all. He's a nice guy and did the work quickly. The only thing that stood out as odd was that the rate Thumbtack initially said he'd charge was $59/hour plus materials. He quoted me, by text, $145 and I ended up paying $135 for about 15 minutes of work, so that was a bit of a surprise but I was in a bind so was happy to just get my issues taken care of regardless of the price. I don't understand the disparity in the rate advertised and what I was charged, but again, I was just glad to have the work completed.

Mr. Yekta was a very skilled Workman. He fixed the drywall of my ceiling. The plumber left a large hole as a result of fixing a leaking pipe. The repair looks good. He also did a good job cleaning up I plan to use him again.

Petar was wonderful to work with, very professional and honest. He confirmed our appointment the day before and notified us 30 minutes before he arrived. He was onetime and worked quickly. We hired him to remove piping where an old vanity in our living room used to be. He cut back the piping, installed drywall and applied texture to the wall. The completed wall looks amazing! You can't tell there was ever a hideous vanity there! We had a few other projects that we needed estimates for and Petar was able to accomplish the jobs during the same visit. His prices were reasonable and we felt really comfortable working with him. We'll definitely be hiring Petar again.

I am so glad I went with Everett. He is very professional. I was looking for someone to do drywall ans what a find. As soon as I called him he offered to help me that same day! I told him what I needed and he was able to do even more than what I had looked for on Thumbtack He did drywall, plumbing, door frames, and more in two days. Looking at the work it would have taken someone else probably a week. He was fast and efficient. His work was high quality. But what was most shocking was the price. He is very very reasonable, I even thought it was to low! I appreciated his friendliness and the fact that he is willing to help out with anything he knows how to do. I've already let him know about another project. Sometomea you never know what your gonna get when you hire people but I can tell You that you will not go wrong with Everett!

Zee was actually painting the home across the street, and we asked him for an estimate. He gave us a fair price and a time estimate to complete the job. His work was meticulous and beautiful. We have crown molding throughout our home, he painted the ceilings, wall moldings and all walls. When the color we selected didn't turn out the way we wanted, he came back and repainted a couple of rooms. Works hard to please the customer and guarantees his work. He did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend him.

Jay and his team did incredible work with a complex job at our new home. From the first moment when he came for an estimate, we saw how knowledgeable and professional he was. He helped us understand the technical aspects of what we were imagining, even if it meant a lower estimate because we did not necessarily need certain things we thought we would. We could tell he was very honest and genuinely cared about his work and making sure the client got the best results. We had two other professionals come for estimates, and it was a no-brainer to use Jay. During the job, he and his team were very careful in the house, and adapted to challenges that came up along the way. He went the extra mile helping to patch a drywall problem, helped repair a door handle, and even took down and put back up the curtains in the living room (we had forgotten to do so ourselves). We will absolutely use him again, have already recommended him to a friend and will continue to do so. What a pro!

I had a GREAT experience with Daniel from World Class Construction! I did not know him before, but he is now my "go to " guy. I had a smaller but very difficult job with some drainage issues and he came up with good suggestions on a repair and his cost and service were great. Also had some additional drywall work done and he was also very fair and competitive. Daniel was also very professional in every aspect, from the contract to finshing the work.

We had just bought a new house and wanted to renovate a bedroom and bathroom that had not been permitted by the previous owner. We hired Ronald Butler and his crew because out of all the contractors we interviewed, he seemed the most knowledgeable and apt to delivering the services we were looking for. From the outset of the renovation, it was clear that our new home was going to need much more work than we anticipated. The discoveries we made when opening up walls, prompted us to change our scope of work. We were now facing new electrical, plumbing, foundation, roofing, and flooring among other things. My wife and I were nervous about the changes because of the financial ramifications, and with two small children, the impact it will have on our living conditions for the next several months. Fortunately for us, we found the right contractor. Ronald's no nonsense advice, professional guidance and expert workmanship has made this process a lot more manageable than we thought. The project included in addition to the aforementioned scope: new floor plan, new HVAC, new tankless water heater, high efficiency appliances for a new kitchen, solar tubes, new electrical sub-panels, two new bathrooms, with new tub, all new fixtures, toilets and sinks, new laundry room, energy efficient recessed lighting throughout the house, new copper piping, gas piping, new electrical conductors, recepticles and switches, new windows, interior and exterior doors, new drywall and paint, new insulation, and a new 400 square foot deck. There were many challenges throughout this project, and Ronald and his crew met and overcame each one in a timely fashion, with courtesy and professional tact. My wife and I feel very fortunate to have found Ronald. He has not only delivered us a completely renovated home, that meets all of our contemporary criteria with all the new energy efficient home options, but he has also given us peace of mind and security for us and our children in an ideal home for many years to come. ....photos coming soon.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
