Dr Stephanie is a wonderful, highly experienced teacher, who focuses on the fundamentals of voice and breathing and also individual voice style and quality. She is supportive, flexible with my difficult schedule, and always fun to work with! I would highly recommend her, especially to those looking for a more academic approach to voice lessons and those interested in classical and musical theater training.

First of all, Steve is a very competent, formally-trained musician. He knows his theory, tonal harmony, scale modes, everything you could want to turn yourself into a more complete musician on the deepest levels. On the more practical side, Stephen wants to teach you what you want to learn. Whether it's rock, jazz or anything in between, Stephen is well-rounded enough play and to speak competently about it all. Great guy. Very happy with my lessons.

I always look forward to my lessons with Paul. He makes every lesson fun and knows how to challenge me without letting me get discouraged. He is one of the best guitar players I've heard and he relates his expertise to my level of ability. It is obvious that he cares about my progress and he wants me to get better. He gives me materials that challenge me and force me to listen to new music. Paul is an inspiring teacher and I'm happy to have taken lessons with him.

Everything!!!! Brian is crazy skilled! I had mostly taught myself guitar when I started, and decided it was time to take private lessons - to take it up a notch. Brian came up with a plan - and we jumped on it. From day 1, kept me busy hrs on end - practice is the key. Patient and down to earth - do I recommend Brian? YES!!! Please give him a call - he's worked with my crazy schedule and has been able to accommodate me.

So i originally sought April for vocal lessons to propose to my then at the time girlfriend by serenading her. Yet as stories go sometimes, it did not workout, but i found a love for singing. April made each time for me enjoyable and yet practical for a male with no previous vocal trainingl. I never saw myself as a singer, and she has overtime come to help me break these ideas about myself. My voice has greatly improved and as a male, i have gotten more in touch with my "high voice". That range of singing in which few males are comfortable to stay within, but the ones who do, are magnificent. I can now in my heart see myself one day of actually singing as good as, if not better than professionals. I enjoy her encouragement, commitment to her students, and her passion for teaching. She is a blessing and made me realize how much i truly cherish singing! Thank you April, for a journey i never thought i would take, but one i wouldn't change!

Noelle is an excellent tutor - very patient, but precise and focused. She has a great way of building the grammar foundations while expanding vocabulary and pronunciation. We are a mini group of adult learners in a professional environment and Noelle has been wonderful at meeting us at our respective levels and with an emphasis on our business needs. We would (and have!) recommended her classes.

We had been searching for a piano teacher for our 8 year daughter for some time and finally found Charlyn a few months ago. We're so glad we did. Charlyn is extremely patient, very professional and totally devoted to teaching. She makes the lessons fun and works toward my daughters interests all the while teaching the important foundations of the instrument. I love her well-rounded approach--she includes a little of everything from theory, finger positioning, to sight reading, etc... My daughter has learned so much and we've only just begun! I would highly recommend Charlyn to anyone--young or old--interested in lessons!

Jorge is an exceptional trainer, teacher, coach, and motivator. He teaches me boxing and various forms of martial arts and each day that I work with him I learn so much -- about myself, about the craft, about Jorge's skills, and Jorge's abilities and patience as a teacher. I can feel myself making progress after every session with Jorge. His ability to break down movements and describe how they all fit together is incredible. He weaves in breath work, ancient wisdom, and practical skill application into every lesson. He positively challenges you to do your best each time, and his fabulous attitude and cheerfulness is contagious. I can't recommend him highly enough! You will not be disappointed if you choose to work with Jorge!

My children loved their Monday lessons with Davey! He made learning a true joy for them and they couldn’t wait to show me all they learned. While we were going through a divorce, Davey brought with his lessons an escape for my girls to feel confident and happy through music. We will miss him! Thanks Davey!

As a complete beginner at the flute, Dennis made me feel the task of approaching it was easy. Within a month or so I was happily making modest music on an instrument I had no idea how to play. I am still learning the upper register of the instrument and it is going much faster than I had expected. The cost of the lessons is very reasonable for the time spent with a professional working session and performance musician. He is very dedicated and reliable. My schedule is touch and go and he is always able to be flexible. Of almost equal importance is the ease of finding parking when I come for lessons. It is easy to get there as well. Enjoy the flute with Dennis. He is also a woodwind multi instrumentalist and a good guy in general. -Aaron Finley

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
